What are you taking about quarantining? They shelter at home. Did you read one of the links? Why don’t you address the facts as to what worked? You literally offered nothing in response to the examples of 5 countries that succeeded in sitting the epidemic in their country. Have a great night.

 

Therein lies the problem. And while some see this as an attack on Trump, he is only one of the many players that could have handled this better in our country.

Going forward, we have hopefully recognized that it is unreasonable to expect a society to shut down for very long without being well-informed of the specific problem, the specific goals, and the specific measurables (standardized in a logical fashion...see an agreeable determination of death, for example) that will be used for determining success/failure.

Did you ask me a question about any of items? If you did, and I missed it, then please accept my apologies because I did not see it!

To be sure, I did not ask you about which policies were successful, rather, I asked you which do you think would work in the US.

I am still curious as to your thoughts regarding these items:

- How low is sufficiently low?
- Define economic pain. How much? Who bears the brunt of it? How do you buffer the impact? What is your plan for recompense?
- Do you coordinate re-opening across the entire country? Or do you let localities decide for themselves? Suppose numbers are sufficiently low in one area of a state, do you allow that region to re-open? Or do they wait for the rest of the state?
- Are you aware that there is disagreement among scientists? So to which scientists do you entrust your plan?
- Do you consult only the scientists? Is there anybody else with whom you consult?

To be sure, @WESGATORS is driving toward some good points. He is right to say that a policy failing to inform the public of specific goals is unlikely to succeed. What are the specific goals? How do we achieve them specifically? Most importantly, you must explain why these are the goals and procedures. In doing so, you must provide something more substantial than either "people will die" or the equivalent of "because I said so".

 

This editorial contrasts Trumps’s claim of Obama leaving him a bare cupboard for pandemics with what Trump’s budget request said to support cutting funding for pandemic preparedness. I know we are all numb to Trump’s own words betraying his lies. This is an example on a pretty important topic.

How do you get great reviews and no credit?

 

The same way you cut the budget for pandemic response and then complain that the prior administration didn't leave enough for pandemic response.

As I noted above, the virus is growing in 18 states, holding steady (plateauing) in 22 and declining in 10. CNN reporting Johns Hopkins figures. 1.66 million plus confirmed infected and almost 100,000 dead and Trump is touting the great job this reflects as we open up on the middle of a growing Pandemic. Contrast this with the Taiwan, Greece, New Zealand, South Korea. Trump’s lack of preparedness left us with this Hobson’s choice of longer shutdowns or opening on the middle of a pandemic. But, as the country examples show, it really is not a choice. And people want to blame governors in an international pandemic. Republican or Democratic, this is a problem that had to be handled competently and early at a national level.

 

Trump lies. Americans die.

We all know that is exactly what his rallies would be looking like if his opponent had done what he did. Except he'd almost certainly have no basis for his claims, as he almost never does.

In this case, he is lying about actions he took that decimated our ability to effectively respond to this pandemic, causing loss of life and huge economic hits in this country.

Despite some who keep thinking doom and gloom, the states that opened have done well.

The political leadership at the federal level bungled this from the outset and comparatively, we can see how other countries that enacted many social distancing measures were also far more organized and serious in the response by addressing structural effects from lost income etc., which allowed them to not have to take the same extreme measures and better withstand the outbreak, economically and public-healthwise. The relevance of invoking "some" was that a swath of the American public has become a big part of the problem. My invoking the constitution and we the people and 2a etc. is to identify why these folks are part of the problem and why they are a danger.

As for what we do now, @gatordavisl covered much of what I'd have written. We should follow the recommendations of public health experts in continuing to ramp up testing, scaling up in the workplace, but while protecting the most vulnerable, such as the CDC recommends, allowing telework where possible. The care in reopening isn't so much as nebulous as reopening comes with risk. Being too eager to play that down in trying to open workplaces and other entities is where the problems begin. This is why I take issue with protesters and defiant types. They are willing to put not only themselves but others, including many who employ others, at risk. It portends undercutting reopening.

Re: civil discourse. Fair enough, but when you label others comments as rambling, it might be a reminder to you to walk the walk.

We crossed the 100k mark in less than three months. I recall another poster who tried to compare Covid-19 to the Hong Flu pandemic which resulted in 100k deaths in the US over a period which began in the winter of 1968 and ended over a year later in the winter of 1969-70. If I recall the number of deaths in the US was around 60k when he posted.
