Coronavirus in the United States - news and thoughts

Happening now. Thanks to these people I will not be seeing my parents for a bit as I am forced into this crowd for work. Believe 5 different shootings so far as well.

 

It looks to me like there has been a steady increase in testing until the past week, where it has leveled off.

 

I think the state did well before the order, so I hope it continues. Many places here shut down before the official decree.

 

I hate to tell them In the Den, but none of them are going to games. They aren’t going to open schools and then have people travel from all over and sit in crowds at games. They aren’t going to increase movement and contact risk. But not for me to turn their happy fantasies into a Too Hot thread. They will have to be happy with games on tv

 

People . . . holy cripeez. Do these idiots read anything or pay attention to the news. Even more concerning, do they give half a shit about anyone but themselves?

I can't say I've ever been more disappointed in this country, which I can no longer say is great. It's a shell of itself. A bunch of foolhardy unintelligent dipshits headed by an incompetent "leader" (edited to try and avoid a 3day vacay). Thank God I don't live in that area and sorry to the folks who do, because I used to really love Florida. But what a bunch of dumbasses. I'm glad to live in a more carefully sensible place, but we're in no way immune to stupidity up here. This crap keeps up and I'm moving to Taiwan.

 

I will share my opinions on this when I can.

 

Football season. At latest in the SEC. With bands socially distanced and families only. All distanced. No fans in the stands.

 

If there are no fans, I posit there will be no football. Too many humans involved in the enterprise - fans or not. One kid gets sick and you are looking at infecting other players, including players who will travel back home to other parts of the country, coaches, referees, support staff, stadium staff, team doctors, etc. And I'm sure I'm leaving out other demographics.

 

And kids on campus. It is risky, but more and more I think there will be games

 

I hope you're right. Not only am I itching for college sports (losing the SEC/NCAA hoops tourneys really hurt); I want to be back on campus for my job. This distance learning thing is great . . . until it sucks. I'm just not optimistic yet. Too many Qs and threats to health. Throw in the liability factor and I'm genuinely pessimistic about fall college and college sports. I need a vacation.

 

I think they are going to have to figure something out. Too much money involved and people are going to want their circuses to go with their bread. Quick testing, off-field distancing, etc. They also might try to utilize online classes to pretty much isolate the athletes from the rest of the campus. All of that goes out the window if their is another resurgence. I also think they might try to shorten the season and end it a bit early before flu season cranks up. A lot of colleges appear to be trying to leave prior to Thanksgiving.

 

What you suggest has so many ramifications beyond the virus.

If the goal is to get the athletes back because of the financial losses to the program and to treat them differently then other students(more so then now), then the NCAA and everyone else involved are admitting that the athletes are EMPLOYEES more then they are students. And they should be treated accordingly.

This could be the reason why many say that all students must be back to have football at all and all should be treated the same.

 

Fans could be limited with masks and socially distanced. Why do you feel only families would be ok, but not a limited # of other fans? There is still alot of time until these types of decisions have to be made. Personally, I would rather be in an outdoor venue with social distancing and people with mask than in a Costco or WM.

 

My best guess is bull Gators and students. If new cases are driven darn near to zero by then, I’d revise that prediction. I don’t think they want to pile tens of thousands of folks from all over the state into that stadium.

I’ve been watching Bundesliga soccer with no fans. It’s definitely different. I’d love to see fans. But, they need the TV revenue way more than the gate and I don’t see them jeopardizing that revenue with reports of outbreaks originating from Ben Hill Griffin.

 

Or they could just start paying the players after making said admission about them being employees.

 

Not sure why the difference, or who is reporting what and how, but according to the state of North Carolina, the % of tests positive has been trending up over the past week or so. After hitting a low of about 6-7% positive, it is now at 10% positive.

Perhaps, but tOSU has an interesting plan to put 20k-40k in the stadium.

 

I think the N&O article was the day before a big spike. The big spike appears to be an anomaly. If not then yes the% may be creeping back up....but if you look at the overall trajectory it seems to be sloaping downward.
