We know historically how many total deaths there are in the country over a given period of time. Let's say Jan-April of each year. We can look at how many total deaths there were in the country this year from Jan- April and really see what the net effect of COVID-19 was over that period. It should not be that hard.

Doctor treating Covid-19 patients says green card was denied - CNN

A New York doctor who's been treating coronavirus patients says she's still reeling days after getting a devastating letter: Her green card application was denied.

"I'm putting my life on the line every day to do this, and it's just blowing my mind right now that they are not appreciating it or they don't see the value in what I'm offering to do," Dr. Julia Iafrate told CNN's Chris Cuomo on Tuesday. "I'm honestly beside myself. It's like a slap in the face."

Several days ago, Iafrate says she heard from US Citizenship and Immigration Services that her green card application had been denied.
"I was blindsided. I was flabbergasted, and so was my immigration lawyer and so was my chair of my department and everyone else involved in this case," she said. "They ask you to be an expert in your field ... and I am. I've proven that time and time again. And I was just blown away that at this time, of all times, they don't think it's necessary to have someone like me here."

About 2.9 million people die in the United States each year from all causes. Monthly this total ranges from around 220,000 in the summertime to more than 280,000 in winter. Apr 6, 2020

So on average 966,667 die in the first 4 months of the year. How many total deaths in the US so far this year? (I'm still looking)

Instead of mobilizing the nation for testing, contact tracing, antivirals and vaccines, he declared that his administration did a “phenomenal job” and applauded the reopening of workplaces, while calling for schools to reopen without adequate protections in place. What Is the Real Coronavirus Toll in Each State?

But comparing recent totals of deaths from all causes can provide a more complete picture of the pandemic’s impact than tracking only deaths of people with confirmed diagnoses. Indeed, in nearly every state with an unusual number of deaths in recent weeks, that number is higher than the state’s reported number of deaths from Covid-19. Epidemiologists refer to fatalities in that gap between the observed and normal numbers of deaths as “excess deaths.”

Measuring excess deaths is crude because it does not capture all the details of how people died. But many epidemiologists believe it is the best way to measure the impact of the virus in real time. It shows how the virus is altering normal patterns of mortality where it strikes and undermines arguments that it is merely killing vulnerable people who would have died anyway.

In nearly every state with more deaths than normal, the total number of them exceeded the official number of measured Covid-19 deaths. Given the limitations on coronavirus testing in the United States, this gap is not a big surprise. Similar gaps have been found in other countries with high numbers of Covid-19 deaths.

Tracking covid-19 excess deaths across countries

As covid-19 has spread around the world, people have become grimly familiar with the death tolls that their governments publish each day. Unfortunately, these tend to under-count the true number of fatalities that the disease has already caused. In many places, official daily figures exclude anybody who did not die in hospital or who did not test positive. Often the cause of death takes several days to establish and report, which creates a lag in the data. And even the most complete covid-19 records will not count people who were killed by conditions that might normally have been treated, had hospitals not been overwhelmed by a surge of patients needing intensive care.

A better way to measure the damage caused by such a medical crisis is to look at “excess mortality”: the gap between the total number of people who died from any cause, and the historical average for the same place and time of year. The charts below use data from EuroMOMO, a network of epidemiologists who collect weekly reports on deaths from all causes in 24 European countries, covering 350m people.

As g75 notes, some deaths are going to be very skewed as a result of covid (auto accidents..,,).

How do you know we are in excess? Where are the total numbers? 100k over 3 months is 33k a month. I’m sure many other deaths are down. Maybe more than 33k?

Thanks! I find it odd that they list numerical details on the graph for those states that are higher, but none for those lower. No, not saying it’s some big conspiracy, just curious as to why.

Trump clapped back at that nurse, Sophia Thomas, who said that access to sufficient supplies of personal protective equipment “has been sporadic.”.

Her comments came during a National Nurses Day event at the White House meant to honor those first responders. Trump upon hearing a less-than-glowing description of the front lines, quickly shot back, “Sporadic for you, but not sporadic for a lot of other people.”

Americans are continuing to sacrifice a lot during the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic, so it'd be nice to know those sacrifices served some greater purpose other than hurting the economy. Well, some bad news on that front: New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) now says new data shows most New Yorkers are contracting the Wuhan coronavirus while obeying the state's strict lockdown orders.

"If you notice, 18 percent of the people came from nursing homes, less than one percent came from jail or prison, two percent came from the homeless population, two percent from other congregate facilities, but 66 percent of the people were at home, which is shocking to us," Gov. Cuomo said on Wednesday.
So if less than one percent came from the jails or prisons, why are we letting criminals out? It looks like the prisons and jails are the safest places to be right now, according to the governor's stats. And if 66 percent of people are getting the virus in their houses, can we end the house arrest now?

"This is a surprise," Gov. Cuomo admitted. "Overwhelmingly, the people were at home. We thought maybe they were taking public transportation, and we’ve taken special precautions on public transportation, but actually no, because these people were literally at home."

The data cited by the governor was compiled from about 1,000 coronavirus patients in 100 or so New York hospitals, according to Gov. Cuomo.

Cuomo said almost 84 percent of the hospitalized patients did not commute to work using public transportation, car services, personal vehicles, or even on foot. The majority were either retired or unemployed and about 73 percent over the age of 51.

except they weren't really staying at home. they were going out for what is considered essential in this country and mingling with others who were infected at the grocers or wherever and they were doing so without masks or proper separation. these people were not locked down into their homes

Nope. Houses can be infected and show no symptoms. They shed the virus internally. We all should be sleeping outside.
