So when is Trump going to visit NYC's ICU wards or visit a few covid nursing homes?

 

Can't fix the economy until we fix the pandemic.

 

Yeah, next thing you know, they are going to expect me to wear pants when I go to the grocery store too. I thought this was Florida, not Mother Russia.

You can buy them for $8-$20 pretty easily or make them yourself if you would prefer to save the $8. It really isn't that hard to use a mask. I've been doing it for a couple of weeks now.

 

If you have severe enough respiratory symptoms that you can't breathe in a mask, you probably shouldn't be going out, especially without a lot of protection.

 

bought a couple Gator masks off of Esty for 15 each. Been wearing them to the store. Get alot of Go Gators!
Throw it in the dryer on high heat when I get home for 15 mins before I wear it again.

Couldn't read past this part. Narrow-minded people should be less emotional. Logically speaking, one can't be "selfish" and "idiotic." The notion of being selfish implies that one knows right from wrong and is doing the wrong thing anyway. The notion of being idiotic is that one doesn't know right from wrong. People who get emotionally charged on this topic are only fueling the fire of others who are gravitated towards the emotional aspect of the pandemic. Can't take any of these people seriously whether they are advocating for masks or protesting the local government. Need less emotion; need more reason and compromise. If you think people are idiots, how can you help them? If you think people are being selfish, how are you weighing that person's needs/wants vs. what the needs/wants of others? This doesn't have to be an emotionally charged discussion.

And mind you, I'm not defending the folks that would threaten violence, but the implication is that such folks represent a significant amount of people (hence the whole "Mask Truthers" blanket term). Instead, though, why not empower stores to enforce their own policies that people would have more respect for? If a store says they are requiring masks for their customers, then people can't rail on the government for the policy. Little details that people miss on can make things so much easier. It's amazing how hard we have chosen to make things as a society.

A person can be stupid and selfish, dude. In fact, in this scenario, they easily go hand in hand. Being an idiot doesn't mean you don't know right from wrong. I would say what differentiates the two is that stupid decisions might only hurt yourself, whereas selfish decisions typically hurt other people too.

 

The mask is primarily used to prevent spread to others. Yes, fidgeting is an issue, but it would only increase spread if someone else' germs get on your mask first.

Let me ask you something, do you cover your mouth when you cough/sneeze? The mask simply ensures that you always cover your mouth when around strangers, with something that works better than your elbow.

Do you feel the same way about DUIs? Seat belts? Murders? Just because you won't do something obviously wrong doesn't mean there shouldn't be laws against it.

 

I would say this is precisely the type of acute and urgent situation in which public shaming is necessary.

We have a situation in which many people are ignorant of the danger (still), and don't want to comply for various reasons, whether ginned up by extremists or out of their selfishness or ignorance. Couple this with governments not wanting to enforce laws/orders too aggressively, instead relying on people to willingly comply, it leaves open a lot of space in which informal controls become necessary.

Noncompliance increases danger, not only for the rebel but everyone else in the community. This is the brutal truth about an uncontrolled infectious disease. And it's not as if we only discovered this in Jan or Feb, we've know this type of danger for centuries.

You ever see those signs at 7-Eleven or the grocery stores that say “no shirt, no shoes, no service” or something to that effect? Basically stating that clothes are required to enter the establishment. Do they also need to pay for your shirts and shoes before you can buy your slurpie?

 

Hard to make the curve flatter than that.

 

It will definitely come back but you said "stronger" so I was trying to find out why you thought it will be stronger. It has already mutated to over 3900 different strains per NextStrain but I imagine you are talking about to a mutation, to an extent, that its almost a new virus.

 

The Sat May 2nd number may be a little misleading. Didn't they start adding some previous deaths to the daily death count during that time frame?

The way this mask controversy is going, it might get to the point where businesses will make it mandatory to wear one to enter. Some will and some will not.

The customer can decide where they want to do business. Amount of risk, etc.

 

Please tell me you don't believe this Excel chart?? If you truly believe that NY, NYC, and NJ haven't had an insane amount of "excess deaths" in the last month, then you are delusional beyond all hope.

 

Yeah I think he defined ignorant rather than idiotic. Also I absolutely disagree that if we want to keep the reopening successful we should leave it up to stores to enforce masks. I'm sure that would go over well with the angry people that don't like masks. I'm not married to this idea though. Maybe in the end the better (or more tolerable) solution will be to leave it up to stores. I know in Gainesville people are already threatening to punish businesses by shopping out of county in order to somehow hurt the Gainesville political establishment.

Also being stupid and acting stupid are two different things.
