Gator Bytes doesn't get the traffic that Too Hot does so I figured I'd post it here. It's not really about the virus itself, so I figured it could get its own thread. Be careful out there, Coronovirus is so bad that even it's maps spreads viruses.

The tactic starts with hackers circulating links to malicious websites disguised as COVID-19 maps, either on social media or through misleading emails. When people open the sites, they're directed to open an applet that can infect their device with AZORult, a years-old malware that steals data like login credentials and banking info.

To avoid the malware, people are advised to stick to verified COVID-19 tracking maps, and to double check the URL of linked website before clicking

Hackers are using these fake coronavirus maps to give people malware

We are nowhere near the numbers of the Swine Flu in 2010. I do not recall the panic we hare having now. Nobody was hoarding anything. 12k people died.

Why all the panic now? Are we expecting it to be much worse this time? Or are we over reacting?

As of mid-March 2010, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that about 59 million Americans contracted the H1N1 virus, 265,000 were hospitalized as a result, and 12,000 died.[117] [118]

Never ceases to amaze me how these totally reprehensible and morally bankrupt people will use anything to turn a buck. If caught they should never be allowed to touch a computer again under penalty of going to jail and staying there.

This is an excellent, data-based analysis on the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

    Warning: it’s loooooooooong.

Yes the experts are expecting it to be worse this time. Nobody was panicking about H1N1 because it had a 0.01-0.08% mortality rate. SARS-CoV-2 has a mortality rate anywhere from 12.5-300x worse.

How can we possibly know the mortality rate without knowing how many people are infected? All we know for certain is the death total.

For an accurate percentage we need both the numerator and the denominator.

Do you have a link to verify the 12.5-300x worse?

That is using a 1% to 3% mortality rate vs 0.01-0.08%

As you correctly point out estimating the mortality rate is difficult because the total number of infected people (denominator) is unknown. All we know is the mortality rate of those that have tested positive - one of the reasons why having testing kits and testing people is so important.

The WHO right now (March 4) estimates a mortality rate of 3.4%

So far we have a total death toll of 39 . 60% percent of those deaths were in one place at a nursing home.

I'm not trying to be condescending at all but are you aware these things grow exponentially? Are you listening to actual experts or just forming an opinion based on how you wish things would turn out? What is the absolute worst thing that could happen to you if you start preparing, vs the opposite?

Partially because we don't know much about it, and how fast it's spreading. Also media is blowing it up for some odd reason...

How do you think this will compare to H1N1 and those other ones once we get a year of data? My guess is it will not be much worse than those other ones.

There are a ton of really smart people who understand epidemiology, statistics and mathematics who spend their entire lives studying these issues. While we do not have precise date on the corona virus due to its novelty, these extremely intelligent people are giving us their well educated estimates. They are doing this because it is their job, not for political or financial gain (unlike many talking heads on TV).

I am certainly one prone to question ALL things but when scientist arrive at a consensus (ie, global warming is occurring), the utter dismissal (ie, wearing a gas mask on the house floor, calling it "just the flu", or saying warning about it is a political act) is both idiotic and dangerous. Let's put 2 data points out:
    - If a single lilly is in a pond and doubles every day and the pond is full of lillies at 40 days, on what day is the pond half full? Yes, at day 39. The spread of this disease appears to be exponential, and exponentials are very powerful.
    - If this disease effects 1/2 the US population but is at the low end of mortality that is generally agreed upon of say 1%, then 3.227 Million Americans will die. The WHO lists mortality now at 3% and that indicates 10M deaths in this country.

In either event, looking back and saying only 39 people have died in a nursing home is cold succor to a future we all hope to avoid.

You're worried that we're not aware of how many nutjobs are on that side of the aisle? Is that it?

Well I'm not guessing about anything but listening to those that are experts in the field. Based on what has been found so far (as far as the R0 of 2.2, and the mortality rate of anywhere between 0.6 & 3.4 %) I think this will kill far more people than H1N1. The US Congressional doctor states the he believes 70-150 million Americans will be infected. at even a 0.6% death rate the numbers are staggering. Even if you use the lowest figure you get 420k dead in the US. I am damn sure praying (literally) that we don't even get 10% of these numbers.

Most of the nuts are in the lefty media just trying anything to try and blame Trump. China having their officials now blaming the U.S. Army for this stuff just makes it more likely imo this stuff got loose from that lab they had in that area.

That's not really a defense for posting something ridiculous, now is it?
