There is nothing “misleading”. The police memorial fund is the organization making the point, and this media outlet simply reported it. It’s literally a blurb of a story and you are freaking out about it as if it’s sensationalized journalism. Police officers who died obviously are younger than average victim of covid, so it’s not hard to figure why they are dying at “only” 1/4th the rate. Unless you know any 70 or 80 year old police officers…

Over 1000 teachers have died. I’m guessing it’s been their #1 cause of death too. That might not be the case in all professions.

Overall COVID reached #3 cause of death.

More police have been and are being killed by covid than any other cause. Police are under vaccinated (are accountants, engineers?). Police are dying b/c of this. If you care about police deaths, why not the number one killer of our blue lives?

But you chose to argue not about those facts. No, you focus on the article headline and attack the "journalism" (on grounds unrelated to the current unnecessary deaths). Investigating the number one killer of cops not being confronted with vaccines is "not a worthy story" to you? Ignoring blue lives now being lost needlessly, and focusing on poor journalism? You should discuss the facts, science and deaths if blue lives matter. Saying the story and cause of current unnecessary deaths are not "newsworthy" is actually sick. Again, however, those lives only seem to matter when they support an agenda.

Facts finally caught up to the NY Times.

Looks like Covid is not really a threat to children. Of course this information was out a long time ago and got blasted by lefties as untrue, insensitive and a crazy part of some anti-science/anti-vax movement....turns out the lefties were wrong again.....but the time has finally come where even the NY Times can't deny the data.

This destroys that whole keep the schools closed narrative....so much for kids needing the vaccine.

Schools should be open and back to normal, meaning no masks, regardless if kids are vaccinated or not.

    From the article:

"Emily Oster, an economist at Brown University who frequently writes about parenting, published an article in The Atlantic in March that made a lot of people angry. The headline was, “Your Unvaccinated Kid Is Like a Vaccinated Grandma.” The article argued that Covid-19 tended to be so mild in children that vaccinated parents could feel comfortable going out in the world with their unvaccinated children.

Critics called the article insensitive and misleading, saying it understated the risks that children could both get sick and spread the virus. Oster responded on her website with a note standing by her main argument but apologizing particularly for the headline’s lack of nuance. Her critics seemed somewhat vindicated.

Seven months later, with a lot more Covid data available, the debate over the article looks quite different.

Oster is the one who has largely been vindicated. If anything, subsequent data indicates she did not go far enough in describing the age skew of Covid. Today, an accurate version of her headline might be: “Your Unvaccinated Kid Is Much Safer Than a Vaccinated Grandma.”"

    The source is impeccable.

When a virus is politically weaponized and the government implements lockdowns and mandates, people are going to push back. It's pretty simple.

This push back is why you see large amounts of fans attending different sporting events across the country every week wanting to have sex with Joe Biden.

What little potential "Build Back Better" had is gone. Which is sad.

There is a paywall so I cannot read the article but can children not contract the disease and spread it to at risk individuals who can become seriously ill? I think that has always been the main concern with children - not that they themselves will contract serious illness but they will get it and spread it to family or others that can become seriously ill.

And did this really need a new thread? Seems like this would fit nicely in the coronavirus thread.

Yeah it needed a new thread. I realize liberals don't like it when science and data force them to admit they're wrong.

Point of the article is kids don't need vaccines.

You're point is more of a reason why adults should get vaccinated not keep schools closed. Also remember that even vaccinated people can still spread the virus.

I have an old friend who is a cop in Florida. He called me up the other day to say he had COVID and was out of work for almost a month….said he thought he was going to die. He did the regeneron in the hospital. He was unvaccinated and regretted not getting the vax.

Is there a reason why those who are higher risk not vaccinated?
The point of the article and data is that kids have almost zero risk of serious illness to covid. Why risk giving a very new vaccine to someone so young? We already know that there is a much higher chance of heart inflation among young males than any other age group. What are the long term affects? (trick question since it can’t be answered yet).

So how many kids dying of Covid-19 is an acceptable number for you? Asking for civilized friends.

You’ve got quite a pair to accuse me of having an agenda when it comes to a story like the this.

This is a misleading story. That doesn’t mean the subject of the article isn’t important or that the officers who lost their lives don’t matter. It means that facts were selectively chosen to generate a headline when statistically speaking the facts of the matter were not any different the the facts of any general population.

It has however, proven to have some value as it has, at least temporarily, nudged liberals to show police a little love. Unintended consequences strike again. Please print the article and pass it out at your next ANTIFA or BLM event. Let us know how that goes.

Vaccinating the vulnerable is no guarantee. A friend of ours had diabetes and other issues that made him 90% blind. His guide dog was recently retired so he had to go to Florida to get his next guide dog. Upon returning to Georgia, he came down with Covid and passed away within two weeks. He was fully vaccinated.

Vaccinating people not only protects them but lowers the viral load they get if they do get Covid. That in turn reduces the chances of spreading it to others, and when they do spread it they spread lower viral loads. Why Americans can't get vaccinated and wear a mask to protect their fellow American is simply ludicrous. What a bunch of spoiled, entitled overly selfish A-holes we have become. Patriotism is having a connection with your fellow citizen of the country you reside in. What a bunch of unpatriotic little shits we Americans are.

I thought the point of masking kids etc was so they dont spread it to grandma and the vulnerable. Conservatives never seem to understand that all the precautions arent purely about individual risk. Shocking since they basically dont believe in society!

It would be nice to see some data that includes deaths by age and a comparison to, say, top 10 killers of children in the various age groups. In FLORIDA, the number is at 27 under 16 deaths in a little over 1.5 years. For context, from 2014 through 2019, FLORIDA averaged 81 drowning deaths per year in children under 16. That puts children under 16 about 4.5 times more likely to die from drowning than COVID. It's not that any of these deaths are "acceptable" but the focus should be proportional to the threat...we are certainly not seeing that, at least in Alachua County.

At least the Regeneron was there to bail him out.

But the positive attitude some anti-vaxxers have towards that treatment is bizarro. Most probably have no clue about the components of either drug. So why so opposed to one, and in favor of the other? All I know is a $20 shot given via a needle sounds a lot better to me vs. a $2000 3 hour blood infusion. Even if both work equally well at reducing worst outcomes, I know I’d want the $20 shot to try avoid the more invasive infusion procedure from being needed in the 1st place.
