A lot of people in their 20s and 30s think this way. But delta has caused too many of them to end up in the hospital or worse. Delta just replicates so fast, that even young and healthy people have a chance they won't be able to fight it in time. What the vaccine does is give the body extra weapons to fight even Delta off, so that the outcome for the patient is significantly less severe without the vaccine.

Waiting until the next variant comes out is silly. The wild type of the virus was already the third leading cause of death in the US, and we knew it was going to mutate. The more people who get the virus, the greater the chance of mutation and a new variant. It will always be a race between vaccine and variant, and medical professionals knew from the start. It's why they wanted everyone vaccinated as soon as possible, and commented on the race back in April, when the jab became available to just about everyone. Medical professionals also knew boosters were a highly likely necessity. Otherwise, why have spots for four shots on the vaccine card for a vaccine that only requires at most, two shots?

The anti-vaxxers are the problem. Even if you are young and healthy, if you are vaccinated, you lower the R0 and lower the chances of getting infected and/or infecting others. You also increase your chance of survival and staying out of the hospital. And you lower the risk of the next variant coming sooner rather than later.

People should be able to make the decision on whether they would like to take the shot. And it is interesting you comment on this not being about looking to control people as we see more and more mandates in many cases for people who are little to no risk of the disease or else lose your job/ability to go to school/etc.

You are correct that we are in this together. And now we have a lot of vaccinated spreading the virus because they think they do not have Covid when they do. You see we need to stop looking at this as vaccinated verse unvaccinated.

Until the data suggests the young and healthy are at a high risk...we are not going to see many more getting the vaccine unless they are forced to in order to provide for their family with their job. Kind of mind boggling that a nurse who worked with Covid patients through this whole ordeal would be told they have to take a new drug or lose their job doing what they have been the last year and a half because they want to wait for the 2 year/4 year/8 year whatever it might be length of time to see more data before they take a shot for something that is not that dangerous to them.

And yes the government is hiding behind the fascism in many of these cases.

Sounds like the guy's been intubated for a month and the wife is pressing to try something different, she won't hold anyone liable. If it's the same case I read about last week, they aren't forcing the doctors to administer ivermectin, some supposed expert got privileges at that hospital to take over care.

    Terrible story.

I am not missing the point. I hope we can get the next generation of vaccine created. Because we are going to need it...

That does not mean that people are right or wrong for the decisions they make when navigating this.

Delta isn't sending more kids to the hospital that we know of. Maybe take what some places are saying for gotcha headlines and read what is being said.

Pediatric Hospitals Are At Their Breaking Points as COVID-19 Surges

"There is no evidence that the Delta variant is causing more severe disease than previous strains, says Dr. Sean O’Leary, vice chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) committee on infectious diseases. Less than 2% of children who have caught COVID-19 during this wave landed in the hospital—roughly the same percentage as during earlier phases of the pandemic, according to a TIME analysis of AAP and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services data."

So let's stop with the scare tactics and move on with our lives. Crap like what you are posting IS the problem. Go look at the numbers. They haven't changed in the UK either.

Yes it is. Did you read you article?

“The extra-transmissible Delta variant has ushered in a new chapter of the pandemic. For the first time, pediatric hospitals are struggling to treat the number of young patients developing severe cases of COVID-19. A record high of more than 1,900 children were hospitalized nationwide on Aug. 14—and unlike during previous spikes, infections have so far been clustered largely in states with low vaccine coverage, meaning hospitals in undervaccinated states like Louisiana, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama and Texas are drowning. “Our hospital system across Alabama is beyond capacity. Last week we had net negative ICU beds, and that’s pediatric and adult together,” says Dr. David Kimberlin, co-director of the division of pediatric infectious diseases at Children’s of Alabama. “Doctors are doing CPR in the back of pickup trucks.”

More kids are getting delta because it’s more transmissible which means more kids are ending up in the hospital during this surge.

Yes I read it. They aren't in the hospital because of Covid for quite a lot of kids. Studies have shown anywhere from 30-40% of kids in the hospital aren't in there for Covid, but are covid+ while in the hospital for something else. You and others parroting talking points is the issue. Covid isn't dangerous for kids. Not close to the Swine flu in 2009 nor a typical Flu season. So stop with the theatrics and move on with life. Push to vax all adults and stop pushing masking. Some people think it's good enough to stop Covid. It's not. Vax up and lets get thru this.

The same percentage of infected kids are ending up in the hospital. A lot more kids are getting infected.

Not understanding what is happening isn't the same as it not happening.

It's not Covid. It's RSV. We can stop with the theatrics and scare tactics. Maybe understanding what is happening is better than some on here throwing insults around.

So we have the AAP and the CDC saying pediatric hospitalizations aren't spiking just because of covid. Guess they don't understand either...

This graph tells the story. It's kids, 0-17, who end in the hospital with COVID.

And from the article, it states the CDC acknowledges the current peak of kids in hospital with COVID is from Delta.

More kids than ever are landing in the hospital with severe illness as the Delta variant drives a surge in COVID cases in the US.

Hospital admissions of children with COVID-19 have reached a peak that has officially exceeded that of the winter surge, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Head of the CDC says otherwise. And some people will never grasp the concept of WITH covid and BECAUSE of covid. Sad.

RSV has become a major problem and has more kids in the hospitals than covid-19.

Some people look at a headline and don't do the actual reading. RSV is a huge issue. Covid is not at this point. BUT, maybe if we mask harder that will help...

It is possible to get RSV and COVID at the same time. And in kids, having both is likely to increase to severity of both infections. RSV is a disease that usually hits in winter, but is likely seeing an increase now with back-to-school. RSV rarely, if ever, has caused hospitalization rates we are seeing right now in pediatric cases. So what's different? Could it be, maybe, I don't know, COVID?

    From the article:

“They are often indistinguishable. The majority of children would have mild symptoms with either respiratory illness,” Lighter said.

A co-infection with SARS-CoV-2 could potentially worsen the course, according to Lighter.
