Coronavirus in the United States - news and thoughts

I have read that the flu cases remain low due to restrictions/masks. Makes sense but I didn't look into it much.

 

So.. at my neighbors kid’s school there was a kid that tested positive for CoVid. CDC guidelines say anyone within 6feet of that student for a cumulative 15 minutes need to be quarantined. Mask or no mask.
Masks don’t matter for the guidelines... only distance and time. (And indoor vs outdoor)
So why is that? I’m honestly curious. We have been told for months that masks make the biggest difference out side of quarantine so why doesn’t it matter in the above situation?

 

Because masks are not 100% effective. They are only a mitigation tool. So it's still possible others were infected by the positive student.

 

Not to mention flu season usually peaks in February (and that it's very likely that a higher number of people got the flu vaccine to avoid a possible double infection).

 

I personally think it's weird that we never hear of the flu anymore. Don't you. I think the covid testing is pretty flawed, I think a lot more have the flu and not covid but still gets classified as covid

 

I've already stated that, I haven't one person with the flu in the past 9 months, just covid. That's amazing

 

What do you mean "don't hear of the flu anymore"? The medical world has been pushing the flu vaccine for months now. Hell, Publix was paying customers $10 to get it. The flu still exists but usually doesn't make national headlines unless it peaks very early or is particularly deadly. You're taking a really weird stance here but I know where it's coming from.

Also you haven't heard about people getting the flu in the last 9 months because it hasn't been flu season. People still get it but it's in very tiny numbers.

 

My son got both. Covid a month before thanksgiving and flu a few weeks ago.

Testing is not based on common symptoms. No, the Covid test is not going to pick up viruses that have very little in common with Covid. The flu has a much lower reproduction rate than Covid, so it will likely not go into any kind of exponential growth without as much close contact, heavy mask usage, and with more extensive usage of flu shots. It isn't a conspiracy, it is just basic math.

I'm sure they counted it as double-COVID though. Also if his heart rate ever dipped below 60 that is now considered a legal COVID death.

 

I went to my GP on Wednesday and my resting heart rate was 60, as usual. Does that count as a near-death experience?

We still test for the flu, many hospitals are using a combined swab now that tests for both at the same time. I actually haven't seen a case of the flu yet, which is pretty amazing.

As for the test itself, it's PCR, which works kinda like a key opening a lock. A key designed for one lock has no chance of accidentally opening a very different lock, and it's the same for COVID vs the flu.
