That doesn't have to come from the federal government. There is nothing stopping Gavin Newsom from initiating a mask training program in CA, for example. And I didn't see mention of mask education in Biden's "First 100 days" plan. Frankly, the emphasis should be on the vaccine. Doing, saying whatever you've got to do/say to get people vaccinated. That is the only way. (side note: that doesn't mean forcing people to get vaccinated, btw). I've even seen talk of tying a second stimulus check to vaccinations. I think that is a wonderful idea. It doesn't have to be $1,200. It could be $300 and a lot of people who would not have done so otherwise will get that vaccine for $300 in free cash money.

 

It definitely can be tied to falling behind but doesn't necessarily have to be. People are social creatures by design and kids need that socialization and behavior skill learning. Some may still get that outside of school but many kids are not even if grades are not dropping. I wish there was a bigger discussion around this not only for kids but for all people when it came to closures. Too much of the discussion has been black and white and not outlining the pros and cons of everything.

 

Most kids are definitely social creatures but, as you noted, there are more social options than school. There can also be socialization associated with the schools that happen even when classroom is closed. My teen still did outside cross country practice/races when the classroom was shutdown. The practices were key to stay in touch. He also has a couple of neighborhood kids that he hikes with when possible, some outside fire pit get togethers.
Not saying social interaction with school isn't important, I am just saying there are plenty of other options.

I think we can do both. Vaccines are gonna take a while. Pfizer is already running into manufacturing issues, and Moderna apparently uses a lot of the same suppliers so they may also run into issues. A lot of people will die before we can vaccinate enough individuals to make a difference. The local governments can definitely do more as well, and it's hypocritical of many to criticize the federal response without stepping up their local efforts. I give Newsome some credit for securing PPEs, we've definitely benefited from that in our hospitals, but aside from that his COVID response has been uninspiring and unimaginative.

My kids school district was careful, starting the year fully online. The State of Arizona has a COVID-19 dashboard with community numbers based on school district, and the state recommends when things are in red, be online. If yellow, go hybrid with part time in-person and part-time online. Green, good to go fully in school. By mid Sept. we were in yellow and the kids did two weeks hybrid, and by Oct., we were green, and kids went back in-person full time. Until this week, when things quickly went back to yellow and now the kids are back hybrid at least until the end of the calendar year.

We've been getting notifications about cases in my kid's high school, about one a week. Mostly kids, with one teacher. Today, we got notice that someone in my kid's elementary school that works with the kids in the grade my kid is in just tested positive. Whether he or she got sick from someone in school is unknown, but this person was likely infected last week when schools were fully in-person, and may have infected other staff and kids.

This is the fear. Community spread. The kids will likely be healthy, even if they get COVID. But what if they spread it to their parents or grandparents? Then what? How'd you feel if you were the vector that got your loved one in the hospital?

Now I have to figure out if I should get my 2nd grader tested or not. And he's supposed to be in-person tomorrow. Do I let him go? Again, I don't fear for his health, but I also don't want him bringing COVID in to my household.

 

Maybe it's better to get info from those who don't rely on the media for COVID info, you know, like doctors and such
