Nobody has ever said masks stop the spread. Slow down, yes, but not stop. Slow down does not equal stop.

The five places where most COVID transmission occurs are bars, restaurants, gyms, hotels, and houses of worship. Before Dec 3, Santa Clara County allowed limited capacity for restaurants and bars, and while people had to have masks on while walking in, as soon as they were seated, the masks were allowed to come off as soon as they were seated. A bar or restaurant where 90% of the people are eating and drinking with no masks on does not disprove the efficacy of masks. Here's an article about the riskiness of restaurants.

As for schools, they have not have been a big a superspreader as I would expect, but it doesn't mean they haven't spread COVID. My child's highschool has had several cases among both students and teachers. The commonality of spread between the kids, especially, are those who eat lunch together. In class, the halls, and just about everywhere, masks are 100% mandatory in school. Only time the kids can take them off is lunch.

 

And you assuming she may have had COVID 3 months ago isn't making shit up? You are a parody of yourself at this point.

 

Well you could but it's not necessary because it is true. People still die from the flu (and other natural causes) that have gotten a flu shot. Is this your first year paying attention to stuff like this? Did you think the COVID vaccine was an immortality shot?

 

Here is a Nov 13 article saying Santa Clara stopped indoor dining and in person places of worship. So that blows your argument out of the water.

And yes, many govt leaders have said just mask up to stop the spread. Biden, Newsom, Cuomo, Fauci...

 

Show me Fauci saying a mask can stop the spread, please. The others are politicians, but Fauci is an infectious disease specialist. Early on, Fauci did say there was no reason to walk around with a mask, but that's before any studies were complete, and Fauci was also worried about a mask shortage for medical professionals. But by April, Fauci was on the mask train and told everyone should wear one when leaving the house and social distancing was not a possibility.

As for dining, Santa Clara County ended all in-person dining early December, as there was still some outdoor allowed. My mistake. I read the Dec 3 order and thought there were still some limited indoor dining. Still, a covered patio considered outdoor, eating and drinking with no mask is still riskier than no dining.

So prevent = stop? To prevent is an attempt to stop, but as any football fan can tell you, prevent defense is useless in stopping anything. And it's an apt comparison, as the prevent D is supposed to keep everyone in front and funnel things to the middle of the field to slow down the O, and keep them from scoring quickly.

Masks aren't 100% effective in stopping COVID. They help slow and prevent the spread, but nobody has ever said they are a panacea to the pandemic. This quote doesn't change this.

Looks like my theory of people putting too much faith in masks and letting their guard down is being confirmed. If you can catch the virus in 5 minutes by standing 20 feet away from someone, a mask that isn't airtight isn't going to protect people from getting the virus. The misplaced faith in the mask is probably leading to more spread, not less.

Yes. You cannot be hit by a droplet when someone is 20 feet away from you. The virus is insanely airborne and masks may slow it down a "little" but again, if more people are foregoing social distancing, because they have masks on, masks could be leading to more spread, not less.

 

So lockdowns are the proper policy then?

 

Yes, for anyone over 70. Someone over 70 is 300 times more likely to die from Covid than someone age 20-49. Anyone under 70 is free to do what they want. If you want to lockdown you are welcome to should be the govt policy. Schools should be open. There, I solved it. Let’s do it.

 

Right? I mean what’s the alternative? Again, is no mask better? Some people are too stubborn or too stupid to wear it properly so no one should wear one? People that got infected with the mask also would have been infected without one. People that aren’t infected while wearing one would have been infected without one. Why is this a hard decision?!?!?
