What do you mean by "stop" then? As in driving the case count to flatline at near zero? No, it most certainly won't do that, not by itself anyway. I don't recall the exact numbers, but I think the CDC expects about 250k additional deaths by the Spring, and about 60k less if people wear masks nation-wide. My takeaway from that is that the CDC expects a reduction of about 20 to 25% with better mask usage.

In other words, if you look at a plot of a region that has really widespread mask usage, it'll take on a similar shape as a region that doesn't (i.e. with similar timings for peaks and valleys), except it should peak at a 20-25% smaller number.

Pretty simple, right? Isn't it amazing that the current president can't get something that even you and I can easily get?

 

To be fair, there's really no reasonable way to conduct a gold-standard study (i.e. placebo-controlled, double-blinded RCT) on masks. It's prohibitively costly and ethically questionable to make placebo masks to enable double blinding and I doubt it'll ever be done.

Interesting, that got me digging a little more into the numbers. Galveston Hurricane was a multi-day event. If we include that we also have to include the Okeechobee hurricane (1928) with an estimated 4000 deaths, the San Ciriaco hurricane (1899) with an estimated 3800 deaths, and Hurricane Maria (2017) with an estimated 3000 deaths. And we can toss in the San Fransisco earthquake (1906) with an estimated 3000 deaths.

If we include Antietam, there are also the battle of Gettysburg (7800 deaths) and the battle of Spotsylvania (4200 deaths). If we expand out to battles that took place outside the US, Elsenborn Ridge (5000 deaths), Saint-Mihiel (4500 deaths) and D-day (2500 deaths) would also be on the list.

With the exception of D-day, these are all multi-day events, so I could see leaving them off if the Galveston hurricane wasn't at the top of the list. Replace the Galveston hurricane with D-day, and the top ten is still 8 days of covid (with Pearl Harbor and D-day not making the top ten). And five of the top ten being this month.

Some crazy perspective on the price we are paying for our incompetence.

LOL, this is quite possibly the funniest thing I have seen on here in a while. Does anyone realize that north of 7,500 people die per day in the US? EVERY DAY! but we are to believe last thursday was the 4th deadliest day in US history? And some people on here believe this crap?
