New York Post – Breaking News, Top Headlines, Photos & Videos

The city’s maze of one-way streets — and apparent bad planning by the MTA — is forcing these New Yorkers to pay the controversial $9 toll even for just driving off their block.

“You have to drive past the congestion pricing to go around the block and to go back uptown for any reason, whether it be to go to work, whether it be to leave the city, whether it be to visit your children, or whether it be to get a haircut or anything else that you do uptown,” said Andrew Heiberger, who lives at East 61st Street and Fifth Avenue.

Since the hated scheme began, residents have worried about toll-averse commuters turning neighborhoods into parking lots, companies saddled customers with congestion pricing surcharges and a first responder union told its workers to flee stations in the zone.
“It’s the same as putting a toll on a suburban street in the middle of a subdivision, which basically if you lived in one house and you wanted to visit your friends down the street in a cul-de-sac, there would be a toll to get from one house to the other house,” he said.

And yet they keep electing these idiots

Can’t people just take the safe subways instead of driving? :D

Its actually not like that at all, since basically all suburbs are designed for driving and commuting, unlike NYC which isnt. But I see the rich people that hate this have their friends in the press doing propaganda.

I’ve read that it would take $100 billion to bring the NYC subway up to THIRD WORLD standards.

    This is our principal city.

It's called an analogy, and it seemed to fit like a glove to what the actual New Yorkers cited the the article, described--just aimed at suburbanites.

Time is money and being stuck in traffic is loss of productivity for businesses if goods and services can’t be delivered in a timely manner.

I didn’t realize how many New Yorkers on this thread are going to be affected. How do you commute into Manhattan’s CBD during peak hours?

It already cost $15-17 to get through the bridge to make it to manhattan. This is just an increase in the toll.

The people it is going to hurt are the firefighters and nurses who that work in Manhattan, but have to live in a more affordable borough. I know hospital employees at Mount Sinai get free parking as a perk (surgeons at least), so there is a real reason to want to drive.

And this law was 100% passed because of lobbying from Uber and Lyft. They didn’t even try to hide their involvement.

Not some grand conspiracy, the whole idea is to get people not to drive their own cars and rely on other means of transport, including ride share services which have basically replaced taxis. The number of Uber/Lyft drivers has long been restricted in the city too (something Uber and Lyft lobbied against). Fewer cars on the road will mean less traffic if you pick that expensive option to get around. I remember when this board was more intellectual and people would argue that point of taxes was to (dis)incentivize certain behaviors. Yes, the whole point is making driving more costly to discourage it. If paying higher tolls cancels out free parking perks and more people take the train to work, that's the whole idea. If not, you pay more for things that have a negative effect on traffic and other people getting around in the city. The law has a massive range of exemptions and its a per day charge for almost anyone outside of commercial vehicles, so the number of actual people getting screwed is very small. Of course, all policies are judged on some make believe marginal or forgotten person that might be harmed and is possibly made-up. Its almost always an excuse not to do anything.

If that's the case you probably arent going anywhere very far. And if for some reason you were, then I really have to question your "too expensive to drive" mindset.

there are options to driving but not actually driving in the city. There’s actually lots of “nice”’places to visit.

From my understanding, the $9 fee is driving in Manhattan only. And you can still visit NYC, drive there, and avoid said fee. We spent a week in an AirBNB on Staten Island two years ago, about a ten minute drive from the ferry. The ferry itself is free, and parking at the ferry building is only $8/day. Once you get off the ferry at Battery Park, you have plenty of options to walk, take the subway, or taxi/uber. We took the subway.

The AirBNB for the week was cheaper than many of the Manhattan hotels, and we had a full kitchen and three bedrooms. The ferry also runs 24/7, and getting into the city was easy.

Have a wedding to go to in Jersey in Sept. If we go into Manhattan, no way are we driving on that island.

And really since its a per day charge if you drive there, you will probably pay more to park your vehicle while it sits there than you will in a one time toll driving into the city (unless for some weird reason you are driving around the city to things while on vacation).

Usually take the train up but if I drive, I drive to Hoboken and then take the train into the city.
