We have the 4th best point differential in the country playing in by far the best conference and went 5–1 against the other top teams in the league. I’d take our resume against any team in the country.
You are totally right, Hey, SOS needs to be well considered to make these decisions. Auburn likely has the best resume. Still. Their SOS is sky high. Duke has the best predictive metrics. They haven’t played the toughest schedule, but they pulverized teams. Houston has a bit of both, with an SOS in between those of Auburn and Duke, and good predictive metrics. Florida is even more of both, with a better SOS than Houston and (now) a better KenPom rating. IMO, any of these teams, except maybe Houston, could be the overall #1. If you are into resume, Auburn is your team. Predictive analytics? Then Duke. Both? Maybe Florida is your guy.
If Florida doesn't get the number 1, hopefully they will be opposite bracket of Auburn so there is a chance of an all SEC championship
And the Gators have now broke 36 on KenPom. Less than one point away from the highest ever rating prior to this season. https://kenpom.com/
Going down with the ship on this, I see. It's ok to admit that when it comes to Aub/FL, some of the metrics are misleading. Only one of those teams a) has 30 wins, b) won the SEC tournament c) went 5-1 against the top 4 SEC teams d) defeated the other team (in convincing fashion).
The metrics simply are what they are. Not everyone agrees with the way you do your contests, but your methods are transparent. Same thing here. These guys have algorithms setup to rank the teams based on certain sets of data. The committee has the final decision and they use a handful of metrics with different algorithms to help them make their decisions. It is what it is. At the end of the day, you’re just gonna have to win some games.
I agree and find the discussion enjoyable. When people disagree with my contest, I don't squelch the speech as long as it is respectful. For the sake of discussion, which team do you believe is better, Auburn or Florida?
Imagine going before the selection committee in early Feb and saying "Hey the Gators got a pretty good team. What'll they have to do to unseat #1 Auburn?" Then the committee sez . . . "You'll have to defeat Auburn, but at their place. You'll have to win 12 of your last 13 games, with 7 of them being against ranked teams. You'll need to beat Alabama . . . both at their place and on a neutral court. You'll need to avenge your only home loss of the season and defeat TN in convincing fashion to win the SECt. Ohhh . . . and btw it won't be enough because, well, metrics." Ok, so what does Auburn have to do? "They need to lose to the Gators convincingly, lose to the two teams the Gators defeated handily in the SECt, and lose 3 of their last four." That makes sense.
When we’re playing our best, I don’t think there is a team in the country who can touch us. I don’t really care about all the metrics and predicting the future. Just tell us who we’re gonna play and let’s watch the boys do their thing. We did beat Auburn on their home floor though and I did not think they had a terrible game. We were just better.
Hard to imagine Duke wouldn’t have lost a few more games if they were in the SEC. Being in the ACC not only means you don’t have to play those teams, but you also don’t have to take the punishment week after week. I think they are really good, but so hard to compare. The metrics just won’t ever be able to capture everything. So relying on them too much is a disservice in my opinion.
Not only that but we handled Auburn without Martin. Imagine how much we would have won by had he played.
Yeah, who cares? We're about to be a one seed in the ncaa tournament and stand as good a chance as anybody to win it!
Torvik has them all on his site under his teamsheets, but he hasn't updated for this afternoon's results.
This is it. Does anyone think an Auburn fan will agree with us? Or Houston? Or Duke? These metrics definitely help more on the bubble, but at the top they do provide some objective data points for comparison. Otherwise, we would go around and around endlessly arguing these points. Those data points continue to have us in 4th, even though the gap has narrowed immensely in the last two weeks. And back in the day it was immensely worse than it is now. The RPI basically rewarded teams that played teams with easy schedules. When it was all about the "eye test," higher seeds always went to the most prominent programs. Now, there is at least an attempt to objectify it based upon how you have played and against whom. Regardless, we are a 1-seed, we will probably Raleigh/Indy on Fri-Sat, and I'm not sure you could ask for a better opportunity.
I maintain that Gators seeding shouldn’t be determined only by the eyes of Gators fans. If that’s a ship you still think isn’t worth being in, so be it, Davis.
