If they’re going to continue (I don’t think they should) to give out 4 byes, they’ve got to drop automatically giving them only to conf champs. In the second round 2 of those teams are double digit underdogs. Rank them 1-12 and give it to the 4 ‘best’ teams.
I was a fan of expanding to 12 teams and giving byes but.... Maybe this season was just an outlier but maybe they need to scale back to 8 with no byes, not add more teams as some have said. Sure Ind and SMU weren't competitive but neither were Clemson or the Vols. Clearly home field advantage is huge in college football and makes for a great environment, not sure it's fair in the postseason.
Thank you, Sankey... for making it part of the payoffs to play in the frozen tundra instead of inside domed stadiums up north. He is the worst SEC Commissioner in SEC history. One more thing, OSU looked so "fit" that I wonder if the NCAA is still testing for steroids. Even their Big-Nasties and Big-Uglies looked fit, that is as fit as a fatty in football can get... far too fit to be natural.
If you look at the last 25-30 years, how many times have you really thought more than 6 teams could win a title much less 12? I mean 2007 was a wild year, where no one team looked great, so a 12 team playoff that year would have been fun. Otherwise, I struggle to recall a season where the 6th best team actually stood a chance to win it if the current rules were in place. As a fan, I like more games, and I like seeing matchups you wouldn't typically see. It's obvious that the powers want this to be like the NFL where a wild card team can make a run, but to me there's more parity, but still not enough where you can see a 10 seed run the table to the title game. Penn state is at 6, and they have a shot to play in the title game, but to me that's because of their path only. SMU, Boise state, and possibly a UGA team with no QB.
The big 10 is top heavy and Indiana avoided playing the better teams with their schedule.. i think the bottom half of the sec is vastly superior to big 10, at least this year.. Tv deals want every conference represented but they should go straight ranking which they still cant right. Many here argued that indiana deserved to be a top 10 team so there you go.
There shouldn’t be automatic bids for winning your conference. And they definitely shouldn’t get byes. ASU and Boise state played no one all year. They got byes. Now they’re going to get destroyed by Texas and Penn state
Some would like to see it expanded like the FCS format, but I don't see how you can expand the number of teams with these results. I like the first round being a home game for the higher seed especially in the cold weather sites.
I would rather have 16. Not that more teams are deserving but byes are bs. I also dont believe they had the 12 best teams in there.
Personally, I'm just glad they finally expanded the playoffs. FCS and the other smaller divisions have been doing this for years and it's great. 12 teams got a chance to play for the national title and I love the early games being on home campuses. Again, the smaller divisions play on the higher seeded home fields except for the national title game. Could the system put in place this year be tweaked? Sure, but I don't want a 12 team playoff with 6 teams from the SEC. I agree that strength of schedule should be weighed more heavily in the seedings, but I also like the idea of rewarding conference champions. The top seeds all won the first round, so it worked out. I'm just enjoying the ride and happy they FINALLY went to an expanded playoff field. Should have happened decades ago, IMO.
Except Boise did play Oregon and did very well. Maybe they can pull the upset. Bad qb play has plagued these games.Ewers and Howard arent workdbeaters but Imaleava just sucks.
I like that they let asu in for winning their confernce but don't believe they deserved a buy. Id rather see 16 than asu or Bouse with a bye. Neither team beat anyone in the playoffs in the regular season. I get that they can only play who is on their schedule but it doesn't change reality just because the schedule is soft. Id love to see Boise win it all but they should do it from the 11 seed with asu at 12. Well we have to squish clemson in and take a better team out but whatever. Make it 16 and usce and ok piss could roll all those chumps.
@Gatorrick22 "He is the worst SEC Commissioner in SEC history." Can you give some detail on this? The growth of SEC basketball (men's and women's) is astonishing.
I think the Gators would have given any of the first round winners a better game than any of the losers did. Might've even pulled the upset. I wouldn't mind seeing it scaled back to 8 teams. It's already clear that going to 16 teams will guarantee twice as many painfully uncompetitive games. I fell asleep and missed the end of all of them except the Texas-Clemson game.
