It’s probably legal if the owner is paying over regular minimum wage. Crappy by the owner though. That said I will be sure to avoid that place as we will likely be at the Tanger Outlet’s one day next week.

Not a tipping thing but the other annoying thing these days is the 3% surcharge if you use a credit card. A couple of labs we use do that now. I told them they need to just incorporate the cost into their fees. Super annoying!

I noticed at one of the counter service places I went to had a notice on their "tip screen" that said "Tip is for the restaurant" ... not sure what that means exactly, but probably is way for the owner to legally keep it.

I'd agree except for the fact I can walk in and walk out in half the time it takes to sit I a drive through. I say "lazy" but it may boil down to semantics as it is more likely "convenience" to sit in a car in confort and not deal with people in a business.

Everyone adds a credit card surcharge now. Probably mistaken but I thought there was a time a business couldn't do that but it is regular practice today.

Yeah, I agree. Years ago I remember reading it was a violation of VISA/MC terminal agreements to charge more for using a CC ... that either changed or VISA/MC doesn't enforce it.

Well that way they may win or at least decrease the likelihood of a wage theft suit.

I bought a car one year and paid with my Amex. There was a tax write off where you could purchase something for up to 50k and not have to depreciate it. I bought a gmc Yukon and whipped out my Amex. They didn’t want to take it and said if I insisted they would charge me the 2.5 percent. I called Amex and told them what they said. Amex told them they could stop taking the card for the whole business but they couldn’t not accept it or charge me. I think this changed around the time gas stations had the cash or credit price difference.

Once upon a time you tipped workers but not owners. Now everyone once a piece, butcher, baker, fishing guide, plumber, hooker :)

I tip in cash directly to the server. They can decide what to do afterwards. It’s usually 20% or more depending on the service. Had a super waitress last Sunday for lunch. The bill was about 26 dollars. I gave her 10 in cash for a tip. Even my wife was ok with it as the service was exceptional.

My wife and I don’t eat out much as we both love to cook. And we cook good, a lot from scratch. I put on some nice music, grab a glass of wine and have at it. It’s enjoyable and relaxing.

Unless the service was bad, I usually tip 25% and up these days. People working in the service industry are usually working hard to make a minimal living. I like to show my appreciation of that. And I have a number of bartenders in town that I tip 50%. And they often throw me a couple of free beers. It's a little unspoken arrangement.

    nice

I have a minimum. I used to go to Golden Corral where you serve yourself except for drink. If someone comes to my table and is polite I give them a 5 dollar tip. Many moons ago 3 dollars back when people would drop their spare change on the table. Not even a dollar in change.

Not sure how Visa/MC could enforce it. Shoot…they like it. They are miney on it.

In dentistry we are paying right around 2% in merchant fees a month. Every card is different if you are interchange plus which is what you should be. If you are in a tiered system you will probably be paying 4%ish (depending on industry). Amex is a little more than 2.5% but the Visa/MC are less.

Needless to say. You spend $100 we will end up giving the merchant service company $2. If we charged the 3% we would give them $2.06 assuming that card was 2% (which is what we average). That $0.06 adds up when you are talking millions and millions of transactions across all the businesses that charge the extra now. I hate it. Just not going to incorporate that into our office. We will just increase our fees if necessary for procedures…

Some bars give their bartenders the ability to comp X number of drinks per shift. If not, and unless he/she is paying for them, they are stealing from the bar.

They might be. I don't ask, they don't tell. But the way I look at it is everyone comes out ahead, including the bar owner. I wouldn't be at the bar in the first place if I didn't like the bartender.

All plausible thoughts. I guess i was picturing ordering food on a app to be delivered to the house while one struggles with finishing their younger kid’s homework, their organizing older kid’s end of season baseball party, and completing their overdue project at work.

I try not to speak in absolutes and that is certainly an acceptable example. It wasn't defined but I don't think anyone was using that example for this thread though. My coworker told me recently his wife spent something like $20 door dashing dunkin donuts while she had the car and he had to get a ride to work. Maybe an extreme example. Maybe not.

People actually tip at counter service places? Who's tipping at like, Panera or whatever? I doubt much of that money is even going to wage earning staff, I always assumed the ownership were just lining their pockets with extra money. Unless they are spitting in my food, I'm not sure my pickup order is getting worse service.

Some of the more financially strapped people I know are the most generous tippers. They tend to have empathy because of their own struggle. I tip well on the rare occasion we go out but i dont abide by the implied obligation to tip at every location that asks for one. As you said, counter service has been declining as well. I generally throw a couple bucks at take out counters if there is a designated take out person but more often than not items are missing or there are no utensils etc.

My main issue is I dont know who gets the money. I worked at a pizza place once, and the manger kept all the carry out tips, never split them with staff. We obviously hated him (for that and constantly playing right-wing talk radio in the store), but I was getting delivery tips, and was rarely in the store, so I just kinda lived with it, felt bad for the kitchen guys though.
