Congratulations to our Gators and hopefully future Gator on their elite selections for World & Pan Am Games:

Trio of Gators Heading to Belgium for World Gymnastics Championships - Florida Gators

Kayla DiCello gets two tickets to go, but I'm sure she would have preferred to go to Worlds as part of the performing 5 instead of being the alternate in case someone becomes ill or injured. Wish she was in school and training with UF coaches, Leanne, and Trinity. Leanne has progressed better than Kayla to this point.

Of the two elite NCAA gymnasts working with their university coaches, the record is 1-1. Jade Carey of Oregon State who was on the Tokyo Olympic team did not make the Worlds or Pan Am teams.

Tiger Droppings Gymnastics commented on 4 of 6 of the World Team are UF if you count Shilese Jones who is committed but unsigned.

Glad she is confident Shilese is coming to UF after Paris. Unless she is hit with an injury, that is where Shilese will be in the summer of 24.

I think Shilese can next sign with UF in early November. I hope she makes it an official tie to UF then. floridagators.com cannot report on her until she signs.

New NCAA Gymnastics Rules & Modifications:

New NCAA Gymnastics Rules, Modifications, and What They All Mean for the 2024 Season - College Gym News

Good adding hold landings for 1 second before saluting. It's past time the college stick is eliminated or at least reduced.

I'd prefer a deduction be added for not landing between the lines on the vault.

I really like the accommodation for ESPN so we can see more events live.

Not addressed is the large increase in two-pass floor routines. I'd like to see college with 3 passes by rule. I realize college is different due to weekly performing demands in season, but 3 passes are 1 less pass than outside the college gymnastics world. It won't be long before elite gymnastics snickers at the 2 pass as they have done with the college stick.

UF freshman Anya Pilgrim has been called up to compete at Worlds:

Dr. Sam, PhD on X: "It sounds like Freshman Anya Pilgrim will head to Belgium to compete! Hills and Florida coaches are already there with Kayla and Leanne." / X (twitter.com)

    Anya will represent Barbados.

Keeping track, the addition of Pilgrim increases UF tied gymnasts to 4 at Worlds. Unofficially, it's 5 with Shilese Jones.

Edit: Pilgrim confirmed and reported on by floridagators.com

It’s a Gator Quad: Anya Pilgrim Fourth Gator at World Championships - Florida Gators

After Day 1 of Women's qualifying, Team USA leads:

Team USA Leads After Day 1 of World Gymnastics Championships Qualifying - Florida Gators

Leanne Wong is in 5th place competing as an all-arounder. As the meet progresses, I think Leanne will likely raise her score a bit to upper 54s close to 55 so she will be competing for the Bronze Metal. Simone Biles and Shilese Jones will be tough to beat for the Gold and Silver Metals. Leanne is definitely a top 5 gymnast at Worlds. She is happy with her gymnastics life working with the UF coaches and is in the best shape of her life, can't ask for more than that.

Skye Blakely had an unaccustomed fall on the beam. Skye's weak event is usually the floor which she needs to improve moving towards competing for Paris 24.

Kayla DiCello is the alternate if needed so she did not perform.

UF freshman Anya Pilgrim will compete in Day 2 qualifying on Monday representing Barbados.

Russia is continuing to be banned from international gymnastics competitions due to the Ukraine War.

This is where Leanne can improve a bit to compete for the Bronze Metal:

    不用睡觉该多好 on X: "Leanne MOTHER Wong https://t.co/n1aQv0T4b5" / X (twitter.com)

On the last tumbling pass Leanne stepped forward on her landing. Otherwise, that's an upper 13 instead of a 13.200 and that would put her in 3rd place.

Leanne has room to improve on the beam:

    USA Gymnastics on X: "@leannewong03 @skyeblakely_ @Simone_Biles @ShileseJ ➡️ BB ➡️ @leannewong03 ➡️ 13.366 https://t.co/agTAqbvWue" / X (twitter.com)

She had a big balance check early on, a couple of smaller balance checks, and I'm not sure she held her landing long enough. It is a beautiful routine if the kinks get worked out. I can see an upper 13s coming with the minor corrections instead of the 13.366 she received on day 1.

Other than a couple of leg separations and the small step back on the landing, Leanne is good to go to the next round of qualifying on the uneven bars at 13.666.

    USA Gymnastics on X: "➡️ UB ➡️ @leannewong03 ➡️ 13.666 https://t.co/ZbBfLvRjmE" / X (twitter.com)

Leanne scored about where she normally scores on vault at 14.166. She scored just over 14.2 last month at the US National Championships.

The best uneven bars worker in the world is not too shabby on the floor either:

    USA Gymnastics on X: "@leannewong03 @skyeblakely_ @Simone_Biles @ShileseJ @Josc_Roberson ➡️ FX ➡️ @ShileseJ ➡️ 13.800 https://t.co/Q1bUBlnCAj" / X (twitter.com)

I'd like to see Shilese Jones make her commitment official by signing with UF in November. I imagine CJR has been in her ear while coaching up Leanne in elites so she knows more than anyone if Shilese will be coming to UF instead of turning pro.

    Clarification of the Rules:

World Gymnastics Championships 2023 daily guide: schedule, storylines, medal contenders - NBC Sports

Only two gymnasts from each team can compete for individual metals. Knowing this, Leanne Wong will not get to compete in the individual finals as she was 3rd on the US team in all-around and did not make the top two US gymnastics on any of the routines. Jocelyn Roberson is competing on vault, but all-around competition goes to the top gymnast in Belgium, Simone Biles. Sorry that I mislead with the above analysis. Leanne and Team USA will likely come home with the Team Gold Metal.

UF picks up first commitment from the 25 class:

College Gym News Recruiting on X: "Jocelyn Sasson ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, the No. 6 recruit in the class of 2025, is heading to Florida. https://t.co/X9sbOsuuoz" / X (twitter.com)

    collegegymnews

Jocelyn Sasson, 5th rated 5-star gymnast has committed to UF. Jocelyn visited UF the weekend of Tennessee and Wisconsin coming to Gainesville. She was in the group of four 5-star gymnasts which is a big deal as there are currently only 13 5-star gymnasts in the 25 class. Those who visited:

1 Kamila Pawlak (Metroplex TX) who has sense committed to Oklahoma.

    2. McKenzie Estep is a teammate with Sasson at Ascend (WA). Estep and Sasson train with Shilese Jones.

    4. Nina Ballou with American Twisters out of Orlando is rumored to be a UF/LSU battle.

    5. Jocelyn Sasson (Ascend WA) who is committed to UF.

Keeping track, 2 of the 13 5-star gymnasts in the 25 class have committed. Hopefully being out of Brandy Johnson's (FL) gives UF an edge with #3 rated 5-star gymnast Jasmine Cawley.

UF freshman Anya Pilgrim representing Barbados at Worlds - beam routine:

Erin:GatorGym photos on X: "Solid beam from freshie Anya Pilgrim (BAR) at world championships! https://t.co/qL8f7DplFu" / X (twitter.com)

    Story with floor routine:

Florida’s Anya Pilgrim Competes at World Gymnastics Championships - Florida Gators

Given her scores on the Worlds stage, Anya can best be described as having unrealized potential. CJR and staff will bring out the best in her. Performing at Worlds representing Barbados can only be a good thing in giving Anya a measure to improve upon.
