The good thing is the call was actually correct. A no brainer shot to the head on the Pitt QB, but no flag was thrown. But Sean Mcdonagh was losing his mind in the ABC booth at the no call, as was the entire stadium and the entire Pitt sideline. Then after several minutes a flag mysteriously appears in the defensive backfield 30 yards downfield. The ref then says, "after further discussion there was an unnecessary roughness penalty on the play". This put Pitt in position to run the clock down and maybe kick a game winner. (Drive is still pending). I have never seen one this weird before.
Didn't that happen in the Georgia Texas game, too? The play where the fans threw trash on the field. The refs changed the call while the trash was being cleaned up. IIRC, the play was not reviewable, but the refs probably saw it on the big screen several times during the delay ... in this case, it wasn't a penalty being called, it was penalty call being erased.
Pitt pretty much bumbled their way to a loss with 4 consecutive penalties after a first down inside the five late in the game, a short kick off after scoring with 1:10 on the clock and changing their defense on Clempsons last drive.
ACC refs are terrible but overall, refs have had a rough year. The USC pass Interference no call against Nebraska was criminal.
Never underestimate the power of the Eye in the Sky. It WILL rule the world. Bizarre to say the least. Make up rules on the fly.
