Exactly, I'm not a real super religious person but I can remember times in life when I might have made the unethical choice if not for my christian upbringing.

Ethical standards and moral underpinnings are culturally inculcated from time immemorial. Religious principles, doctrines - tenets - do indeed teach behaviors based on the law of reciprocity, but the Christian faith - or any other faith based religion - has no exclusive claim to source for ethical or moral behaviors in its regulatory precepts.

We acquire our mutually beneficial and cooperative patterns and tendencies, our moral compasses from our forebears, which are reinforced by law and approbation or disapproval from our peers.

Atheists and believers both have moral compasses, but with key differences: Belief in God associated with stronger endorsement of moral values that promote group cohesion

    Summary:
A new study suggests that, while atheists and theists share moral values related to protecting vulnerable individuals, atheists are less likely to endorse values that promote group cohesion and more inclined to judge the morality of actions based on their consequences. Tomas Ståhl of the University of Illinois at Chicago presents these findings in the open-access journal PLOS ONE on February 24, 2021.

These findings suggest that the widespread idea that atheists are immoral may arise in part from their weak endorsement of moral values that promote group cohesion and their consequence-based, case-by-case moral judgment of actions.

Ståhl adds: "The most general take-home message from these studies is that people who do not believe in God do have a moral compass. In fact, they share many of the same moral concerns that religious believers have, such as concerns about fairness, and about protecting vulnerable individuals from harm. However, disbelievers are less inclined than believers to endorse moral values that serve group cohesion, such as having respect for authorities, ingroup loyalty, and sanctity... It is possible that the negative stereotype of atheists as immoral may stem in part from the fact that they are less inclined than religious people to view respect for authority, ingroup loyalty, and sanctity as relevant for morality, and they are more likely to make moral judgments about harm on a consequentialist, case by case basis."

I bolded tenet as it is one of those words easily confused - like rein & reign - that incorrectly appear on this forum with alarming regularity. In this thread alone the word was misspelled no less than 5, perhaps 6 times.

A tenet, is a principle, belief, or doctrine generally held to be true especially one held in common by members of an organization, movement, or profession.
A tenant is a person who occupies rental property.

Our founders were brilliant in that they made sure no one religion became that of the state. But allowed for the people to Freely Express their religion.

We are blessed to live in a Country that does so.

This book was $.99 on Kindle. I have no idea how good it is (though it was well reviewed). Not sure if I will get to it but could not resist at the price, thinking it could be interesting
