I am surprised by the number of people against it with as much stuff that they order from Amazon and Temu. Where do you think most of that stuff comes from? We are too cheap to buy products that are sourced and built in America
If that person is US military personnel or holds some kind of security clearance, then that is 100% a national security concern. They could blackmail someone for that.
Sure, that's why a lot of my stuff is made in China. But I guess we get mad when certain things undercut our prices, so we say no to Chinese free trade when it suits us. They probably get protectionist too on some things. Everyone engages in free trade when its convenient.
mob I misunderstood. I thought you wanted to get one regardless and import it. I don’t see it getting permission to import here so no service centers. One thing I don’t trust Tesla on is locking out others from technology. BYD is not allowed here two or three lines of code would stop them from being able to use Tesla chargers.
Well China has heavily subsidized its EV industry, which is a big reason why their EVs are cheap. That's not free trade. So we're doing the same thing, subsidizing our EV industry. Not sure why you have a problem with us doing it if you don't have a problem with China doing it.
We heavily subsidize our EV industry for a long time too, including purchases for government fleets. So what? If theirs are cheaper, why is that bad?
Lol…you are really committed to your point if you want to dismiss as irrelevant something like giving an enemy information that could be used to blackmail US military personnel.
I just said you dont need data to do any of that. That's how tradecraft has always worked, you find someone who's in debt or can be leveraged and you turn them into an asset.
Theirs are cheaper, but there is a price to be paid that isn't reflected in the list price. I view China as our enemy and the longterm enemy of democracy. You don't. So we're not going to find much middle ground here. I'm fine with 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs for a variety of reasons.
Every time we find an enemy, democracy suffers here and abroad. The story of America's descent to the shit we are living through now.
I could definitely see blackmail resulting from the Ashley Madison site, for example, but I'm still not clear what sort of scandalous material is being gathered and weaponized via Tik Tok, particularly compared to other apps like Telegram?
I’m torn on the issue. I don’t know which way I fall. OTOH why deprive consumers the opportunity to get cheap electric cars - if we really think electric cars are better for the environment having more consumers driving them would be a good thing. OTOH China hugely subsidizes these things and it will destroy our budding EV production market then we become reliant on China who is now a national security threat. Ironically the tariffs have made Musk a rich man.
It's gonna make Hyundai / Kia more rich as well. It seems like they're taking the early lead in filling the gap here in the US.
If climate change was really THE overriding issue above all else, then buying cheap Chinese EVs and solar panels would be a no brainer.
All things being equal I am for zero tariffs. I think the rise of China is just about over. In the 80s and 90s is was the Japanese before that it was the Germans. The USA will be supplanted eventually as the dominant economy in the world but it won’t be soon and I don’t think it will be by China.
