Meh. IMO this deserves to be looked into, but I don’t see anything damning in the article. There is a lot of intimation but the placement of Ken Salazar is pretty weak evidence. Of course, it’s largely up to Justice Roberts whether anything gets looked into, and that’s the larger issue.
We seem to have a hybrid Capitalist and Welfare system. I consider our US welfare policies and programs as a moral safeguard to providing 'basic' education, health services and food for our citizens. Without Medicare I might not be able to afford needed health care services potentially leading to untimely death. Earned social security benefits will help provide me sustaining food and shelter. I paid earned money into the SS savings account bank and now that money is being returned to me and is not exactly a welfare service. top 10% of adults hold 85%, while the bottom 90% hold the remaining 15% of the world's total wealth, top 30% of adults hold 97% of the total wealth...Wiki The above facts appears to suggest a free market economy is alive and working for 30% of the worlds population.
That is some funny stuff!!! One thing is your beloved President and his son paying child support for Hunter's kid? Does Biden even recognize his grand child? Talk about common desensency. Come down off that moral high ground you libs thought you had while you demonize Trump. The sleaze ball family in the oval office is just as if not more corrupt. The sooner you guys realize that most all of our leaders D and R are corrupt the better you will be
Democratic politicians will say that but then will turn around and do it themselves. The Pelosis are Exhibit A. But I actually think that's a good idea for the most part. I would let them trade on condition that they basically give their money to a handler or manager and are screened from providing any information to that handler, including exactly where to buy and where to sell.
you can't be serious. Trump family was convicted of stealing charity funds and can no longer operate charities, so many lawsuits for fraud, so many bankruptcy filings after al the cash siphoned off from companies. the list is too long. and ftr, Biden is not my choice, merely the better alternative to trump. of course, felix the cat is a better alternative to trump. Hunter is, and has been, a scumbag. this is not the hunter is a scumbag thread how do you feel about Thoams taking lavish trips and free rent for Mom from a major donor with business interests imapcted by court decisions? how do you feel about ginni thomas making millions from sad donor? how do you feel about Thomas's wife using her relationship with the Chief Justice of the USA to procure business from firms arguing cases in front of him?
That will work out about as well as Dick Cheney's blind trust that was full of Halliburton stock while his former company made bank on the Iraq War.
People will always break the rules, even if you outright ban stock and bond trading for politicians, doesn't mean we shouldn't have ANY rules. I think this is the best option.
I am not trying to be condescending or improper here, but what do you do for a living? I am in the business world and relationships are how business happens. The only folks that relationships don't mean as much to for their financial success is educators. I think we have a lot of that on this board of folks who view everything from their ivory tower and that is just not how it is in the real world. Yes, by all means some people use their relationships nefariously and they need to be called out, but successful people are going to have relationships with other successful people that could cause some cause on the surface. If you don't think there is anything wrong with what Hunter and dad has done, then no sense in trying to have a rational discussion. Has Trump made a lot of nefarious business deals, I would say yes, but I challenge you to find any successful businessperson that doesn't have some skeletons in their closets. Were these wives' compensation the same as what the markets dictates for services? I don't know, not my area, but before pointing fingers, let's see just how odd it is for someone with zero knowledge in the energy industry to be paid millions for consultations on a subject they have zero experience in.
I am a partner in a midsize surveying, planning, and engineering firm. I also chair the zoning board for the town I live in. I fully understand the nature of relationships and I also fully understand the limitations of them when you cross into the public sector where authority is given to you by the people. I cannot take a county commissioner or even growth management official to lunch and pay for their lunch, let alone take them on an all expenses paid vacation. I have friends that work for the county or other regulatory agencies and we have to take my boat one trip and their boat the next if we want to go fishing together. If my wife was in the business, I would be required to recuse myself if a firm that she financially benefitted from came before my zoning board. Let's say she had a business selling parts to an auto supply place and said auto supply place came in for a zoning application, I would be required to disclose the conflict and recuse myself. As a volunteer official on a small local zoning board in Florida, I have a higher conflict of interest requirement than the chief justice of the US supreme court. Roberts financially benefits from firms that go before her husband where grey calls are decided, just like my zoning board. Your turn to answer questions. I suspect your moral compass is pointing one direction but your go team mentality is leading you to avoid recognizing the correct direction. Don't conflate the private business world with public service, apples and orangutans. this is a thread about the USSC and lack of conflict of itnerest rules. If you want to talk about Hunter, do it in a different thread and I'll be happy to discuss it there
I applaud you for your commitment to be truthful and correct in your actions. As I said, let's compare normal compensation for the jobs they are performing and if there is something there, I am all for whatever it takes to correct it.
her fees are commission based. if she does not get the contract to go head hunting, she doesn't get the commission. If the firms that practice before the USSC refuse to do business with her and choose others, that may or may not influence his decisions, either way it is a conflict. should Thomas be permitted to take all expense paid lavish trips with a donor with an agenda, one he never knew until he was appointed. should his wife be able to generate a great salary running a non-profit funded by the same mega donor? Gorsuch sold property to a firm that practices before the court within weeks of appointment, a property that had languished on the market but suddenly sold right after his appointment.
Hunter is a Supreme Court Justice? I never knew. Even his mention in this thread the subject of which is the ethics of SCOTUS justices is another indication that Hunter Biden Derangement Syndrome (HBDS) is real.
The subject of this thread isn't Congressional ethics it's the ethics of Supreme Court justices although I guess we can agree that when it comes to lack of ethics members of both bodies are in a race to the bottom. Interestingly one body has been complicit in the corruption of the other, specifically SCOTUS through the 5-4 Citizens United decision has legalized a form of bribery for members of Congress.
While I appreciate the perspectives of a number of posters on this topic, my own opinion is that both parties stink of the filthiest stench imaginable. Gov't participation for many is merely a stepping stone to becoming part of "The good ole boys club". A place to make contacts, so when one leaves Gov't, they go straight to the hog trough of corruption. For Democrats it's usually more about staying in Gov't in order to qualify for multiple retirement plans. In Philly we have multiple female, current and former legislators, that can wear a different "crown" for a month and collect a forever pension for zero work. Republicans are worse of course, they wake up every morning trying to steal from someones cookie jar, typically from those least able to afford it. Health care - No Housing - Forget about it Food Stamps - Cut the dole, let them eat cake. Prison - Throw them in it and throw away the key. Once pub sevice is over you will see them EVERYWHERE as CONSULTANTS making 6,7 8 figure salaries. Usually to take corporate heads to the nearest Ruth Chris so they can "lobby" them then hand them an envelope full of cash. The current American ethos. Lie, Cheat, steal. The successful ones are lauded as great civic leaders. The ones that get CAUGHT are ridiculed and shamed, while those doing the ridiculing are depositing the same envelopes. College Football anyone?? This thread is a SEPTIC TANK with NOTHING but STINK INSIDE. Don't care what party you support.
That "revelation" didn't bother me. It doesn't strike me as an "appearance of impropriety." The Thomas revelation, on the other hand, is disgusting. If there was ever an unabashed ideologue on the Court it's him, but he doesn't have the integrity to resign.
Nope... we invented our Constitutional Republic before Karl Marx invented his manifesto... so Capitalism supersedes the communists and socialists.
Didn’t “I like to boof beer” Kavenaugh have his extensive gambling debts magically paid off? Think there’s a chance he quit gambling when he won his appointment, or is he still being bankrolled? These Fed Soc judges are all corrupt AF. Not surprising considering who appointed 3 of them (to be fair, I’m not aware of any reports of character or corruption issues with Barret, she is just a religious nut/zealot).
