We attacked the zone defense last night much better than we have in, frankly, the entire CMW era. Granted, Stony Brook wasn't top competition, but that's why they went zone. They were trying to let the air out of the tires to shorten the game and keep it close. Really, it was a smart approach but we decimated it anyway. Colin was particularly effective against it. He got his 13 points, but was also passing beautifully out of the high post or the elbow of the lane. Our perimeter passing in lieu of dribbling was also great, and initiated by Lofton. We moved the ball quick enough to usually find someone open. It's not much fun playing against a zone but I'm glad we got to see it early in the season. Because we'll be seeing more.
Teams that play as a team instead of five individuals can do well against zone defenses. I liked what I saw about our team culture.
