Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis getting in the race did not cut into former President Donald Trump's support, and special counsel Jack Smith's indictment Thursday has only furthered his lead on the field, according to the latest CBS News poll released Sunday.

Trump has stretched his lead in the poll to 38 points over DeSantis and at least 57 points on the rest of the field. The poll, taken after news of Trump's indictment Thursday, shows that his base is sticking strong with him and he is picking up some support from others.

Trump's messaging is catching on with likely Republican primary voters, too. Just 26% want their nominee to be someone unlike Trump, while an overwhelming majority of 74% want their nominee to be like Trump.
    1. Trump — 61% (+38).
    2. DeSantis — 23%.
    3. Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C. — 4%.
    4. Former Vice President Mike Pence — 4%.
    5. Former South Carolina GOP Gov. Nikki Haley — 3%.
    6. Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy — 1%.
    7. Former Arkansas GOP Gov. Asa Hutchinson — 1%.
    8. North Dakota GOP Gov. Doug Burgum — 1%.
    9. Conservative pundit Larry Elder — 1%.
    10. Former New Jersey GOP Gov. Chris Christie — 1%
When likely GOP primary voters were asked which candidates they would consider, Trump received an overwhelming support of 75%.
    1. Trump 75%.
    2. DeSantis 51%.
    3. Scott 21%.
    4. Pence 16%.
    5. Haley 15%.
    6. Ramaswamy 13%.
    7. Elder 9%.
    8. Christie 7%.
    9. Hutchinson 6%.
    10. Burgum 4%

Gop’ers, why is trump this popular over desantis? is it demagoguery? I know quite a few old-school staunch repubs that absolutely abhor Trump.

Because Trump makes Democrats more upset, and that's realistically the GOP platform right now.

Seems DeSantis’s complete inability to form anything resembling a competent campaign that addresses real issues is as big a factor as the persecution complex.

Idk--i like RonnyD > DJT, and in '16 primaries, Marco Rubio.

My guess is that DJT represents a sincere, heartfelt screw-you to the aspiring omnipotent-government worshipers, from the freedom loving heart of old school America.

Or perhaps its bc he's the most overtly anti-china politician.

    Perhaps a combo.

RonnyD hasnt really established himself on the national stage besides being Covid and anti-woke hero--which just doesnt quite move the needle like the China problem.

    Jmho/fwiw.

DeSantis knows what he must do to get the win: Get himself charged with a bunch of federal crimes.

Insert 'chi-com puppet party' before Democrats there, and I'd almost meet you there.

But it's not about making the omniporent-government worshipping chicom puppet party 'upset'-- its about wanting to stab the beast in the chest; wanting to eradicatec the cancer, even if doing so requires x-ectomy (ie--removal of a contaminated organ, to save the organism).

I would consider myself old school, and I think Trump is one of the worst things to ever happen in politics. How he holds a lead like this is beyond me as he is simply an awful individual and not worthy of my vote. As both parties have moved outwardly toward the fringes, I find myself lost in the middle. Pretty damn sad.

    Nah. It’s a cult.

When a cultist breaks off and tries to mimic the leader, it stands to reason only a small % are going to line up behind “the imitator”. They want the real thing. Probably not much more complicated than that so long as Trump is around.

I’m not sure there is a lane for a sane Republican at present, but Desantis I think went way too far with the “anti-woke” and anti LGBTQ song and dance. I think even some Trumpists see some of that as crazy. Peter Theil was like “I’m out”.

If Trump had the ability or desire to "fix" what you are talking about, he had 2 years of GOP control of the House and Senate. Trump doesn't even have a platform, so I don't see any appeal for him other than he pisses off libs the most. I genuinely don't see anything else.

And Trump's when he left office was 34% approve, 66% disapprove per Gallup.

Pew had Trump at 29% approve, 71% disapprove.
