They gave a list of reasons. Farming being a main one.

Hardly a balanced article, but for me it's exhibit 490,875 in the case for needing more critical thinking skills in Education.

Biases aside, it doesn't take a leap of foresight to have envisaged this outcome.

I find it hard to believe that a "conservative" from Canada would choose to move to Russia in the first place. Unless they think Russians really are more free than any other western country.

They moved there specifically because it's less free (to LGBT folks).

I suspect it's not a huge number and maybe "freedom" isn't their main argument, but there are certainly people in the West who believe that the US resembles or is worse than the USSR/Russia. Some have posted as much on this very board.

Drinking the kool aid that we are somehow a "commie" country and that life would somehow be better in an authoritarian state like Russia (white nationalist authoritarian to be specific).

It's always reverse discrimination and never the person's own shortcomings.

Would be interesting to read the theories of some here as to why Russia took such a rigid stance, especially regarding transgenderism. I don't think we can blame a religious lobby, as the country spent the better part of the past century without religion. There isn't a religious right element within their government.

You’d think our Democrats would be flocking to Russia.

Imagine that’s true. But the country has certainly been getting some love from the American religious right for awhile.

Yes, actually there is. Putin is utilizing the Orthodox Church as a means by which to attempt to generate national identity separate from the Soviet era.

Lots of long-standing prejudice when it comes to such things. Many countries still have the long-engrained hate. It doesn’t just disappear over night.

He’s leveraging far right religious ideology the same way Republicans have pandered evangelicals for decades, the same way Islamic fundamentalists took power in Iran and elsewhere, and the same way Netanyahu clung to power in Israel. Easiest playbook in politics when you want to take power from the people. Pander to religious fundamentalists that you’ll use big govt to enforce some imagined “higher law”. Just give me the power, I’ll handle the rest!

Even though it was soviet policy to not have religion, the Russian Orthodox Church did not evaporate between 1917 and 1991. Deeply ingrained in Russian culture.

Would it be more legit if it came from LGBTQ Nation and msn?
    MSN

    Couple updates:
"In addition to money from the sale of their farm and other assets, the Feenstras also deposited a substantial sum they made via donations
from supporters of their YouTube channel, with no documentation as to the source of that money.

In a February 11 video, Arend said the family’s bank account was no longer frozen."

Not defending cold, cruel Russian protocol but some perspective might be in order.
