Yes. His cronies in the legislature changed the law to allow him to use it on out of state immigrants.
First flight landed Friday and it took DeSantis 4 more days to own it? What a coward. For those backing him, this is what you want in a leader?
Sadly, with the level of corruption in the GOP, doesn’t really matter if they broke state law. The law is more of a “suggestion” at this point in FL. If they are continuing to “trick” immigrants onto those flights (I.e. commit fraud), I have no doubt whatsoever laws are being broken. Probably in multiple jurisdictions wherever these activities took place, and at federal level where they crossed state lines. If it was a law enforcement operation it would be called “entrapment”. But as it’s done by commercial interests, it’s just good old fashioned fraud (with a little kidnapping and human trafficking thrown in). I doubt CA is going to charge another state’s Governor, but I’d like to see the feds step in and raid these flight operators. Enough is enough imo.
Perhaps the Fed should play DeSantis' game and start sending agencies in to investigate the private contractor's operations, equipment, maybe even finances, etc.
They obviously are breaking the law, so it wouldn’t exactly be “a game” to do that. As these people will apparently continue with these flights, it is also in the public interest to shut these operators down.
I was unaware that they amended the law such that the money could be used regardless of where the trip originated from. So now it is a second degree felony for individuals or companies to transport undocumented workers in Florida but okay to use my tax money to transport them elsewhere. Smdh
From this morning’s Times Faith leaders provide support California officials and community faith leaders would not be surprised if more flights with migrants arrive, though they have not been given any notice. So far, the community has provided the migrants with housing, clothing, cellphones, haircuts and legal services. “We are letting them kind of dictate what they believe their needs are,” Cecilia Flores, a spokesperson for Sacramento ACT, said at a news conference in Sacramento on Tuesday morning. “Our approach is really enabling them to feel once again empowered.” Many of the migrants are still figuring out their destination. A few have been picked up in Sacramento by loved ones. Others remain in Sacramento and have indicated a desire to help out in the community, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg said during the news conference. Such support would be illegal under current Florida law, even for a church, although that had not been Constitutionally tested. But DeSantis Christians know that this type of caring for the stranger is not authentic Christian doctrine, which calls for hating the neighbor
Florida has spent $30M so far on these campaign stunts. That money would have fed and sheltered a lot of people. BTW, is Desi a thing? Or did the OP just make that up?
Why is DeS involving himself and Florida in Texas and California's affairs in the first place? They obviously didn't ask for his assistance. Has Florida run out of immigrants, that he must look elsewhere for publicity stunt fodder?
He wants to make brown people pouring over the border an issue, and he has the bad luck to be Governor of a state without a land border with Mexico. So he has to improvise to prove his hatred
Without consulting with the relevant governors? Did he think Abbott and Newsom (especially Newsom, of all people) would just send him thank you notes?
Ignore the moral questions this stunt brings into question, the question you raise is the big question- the legal question.
The GOP-led Florida state legislature gave DeSantis $12 million earlier this year for an “Unauthorized Alien Transport Program.” That move came after controversy over last year’s flights, which many state legislators said were an illegal use of state funds. The state paid Vertol $1.6 million for the Martha’s Vineyard flights — about $45,000 per migrant flown to Massachusetts. WaPo
Shit, ignore the moral and the legal questions even. Why are Florida tax dollars being used to ship people from Texas to California? How can even the biggest DeSantis supporters think this isn't an epic wasteof money?
Not even quite sure how this even Ownz Da Libz. Unless being mad about wasting tax dollars is Ownin...
The Democratic senators are not on board. The Republican senators are monolithic in their adulation of Ron D. "The move drew harsh criticism from Democrats and immigrant advocates, who helped many of the migrants sue DeSantis and other state officials alleging they were victims of fraud for political purposes. Some migrants who were transported said they were not clearly told where they were going." "A Democratic state senator also sued DeSantis over the relocations, saying they violated state law because the migrants were being moved from another state, not Florida. The new legislation would address that issue, allowing Florida officials to transport migrants from anywhere in the country — a modification that could nullify the suit."
