12ft | California district accused of transitioning girl without telling mother settles for $100,000 - Washington Times

“Today’s settlement is a clear message to schools: parents will not stand idly by as schools trample on their right to raise their children,” said the Center for American Liberty, which represents Jessica Konen and her daughter Alicia.

The center announced Tuesday a settlement between the Spreckels Union School District and Ms. Konen, who claimed in a lawsuit filed last year that the school hid her daughter’s new name and pronouns from her after teachers convinced the seventh-grader that she was transgender.

“At its core, this case is about upholding the sacred bond between parents and their children,” said center CEO Harmeet Dhillon. “Parents have an inherent right to be involved in pivotal decisions concerning their children’s lives.”

“If you choose not to fight for your children, then they will fight and take your children,” Ms. Konen said in a statement. “Stand up parents, it’s your right to be able to parent your own children.”

This is great news; I hope they continue to sue the shit out of sick SOB's

Problem is, much like when cops behave badly, the people who end up footing the bill are the taxpayers. At some point, people need to be held personally accountable for objectively bad behavior

    $100k isnt enough.

In before the "experts know better than parents crowd" shows up.

I'm assuming it's $100K because there is more to this story than the right-wing Washington Times headline suggests. $100K is "just go away" money.

It's such a short article. I'd like to know the other side's take on what happened. Of course the source is right leaning, so that isn't a surprise either.
Teachers should teach and not encourage nor discourage these kids. By the title I thought she had surgery or was taking hormone blockers.

I dont think anyone would support what was alleged: “The lawsuit alleged that the two teachers who headed the Equality Club at Buena Vista Middle School told 11-year-old Alicia that she was transgender, encouraged her to take on a male identity, warned her not to tell her family and then hid the information from her mother.”

Encouraging deception from parents should only happen to involve police in suspected abuse cases. No idea on the validity of the case but settling would indicate they didn’t like their case.

Agree the headline is a ruse.

I don't like the idea of schools withholding information from parents when it comes to a child taking on a different identity and using a different bathroom. That said, I can imagine a tougher situation where a teacher learns that a student might be gay and whether that becomes a reporting obligation.

". . . . after teachers convinced the seventh-grader that she was transgender."

I understand that the primary issue here is the parents' right to be involved in such a major decision by their 7th grade child.

But I highly doubt that the teachers "convinced" her that she was transgender. More likely, the teachers supported her decision, but without the knowledge of her parents. And THAT is the problem.

I don't know, I hadn't really thought about it. On one hand, nothing should happen in a classroom that needs to remain private, I don't think. Unless it's a student having a meltdown. On the other hand, the idea of very one-sided parents poring over every minute hoping to find something they can use to raise a fuss and claim the teacher needs to be fired ... that's a recipe for ugly trouble.

Yep, that sad part is the abuse from both sides including these helicopter parents that will sue for any reason to stick it to the school board or teachers. It would have to be cameras without microphones.

Force cameras and mics into every classroom and you'd lose a whole hellavalotta teachers that same day for these very reasons.

Cameras in classrooms have many positives...They can be helpful to find a gunman or trespasser on campus. They also bring accountability.

No issue with a camera in the classroom at all.

I certainly see some negatives, but the + outweigh the - imho.

    Uh, no.
The school district just settled a lawsuit by the mother for $100,000. That's a fact.
Last year, an independent investigation concluded that the teachers did not coach the students to change genders. That's also a fact.
Neither proves nor disproves the other.

Except that you as a parent have no right to watch other people’s children. Think this all the way through.

Why would a group of teachers try to "convince" a kid that he or she is transgender? What would be their motive?
