If we play like like we did against Tennessee, there are several games we could win. We might not win any of them, but we could. Retaining Napier I would think would have to do with who we have our choice of hiring this year. If we don’t like the hired, maybe we keep him.

It’s true that you can build quickly through the portal, but the high school recruiting is still the backbone of the program and Alabama is feeling it right now. Maybe it only takes two or three years to get back to top form if they can do it but it’s still a big bump in the road.

Guess it depends on standards. Psu only has 1 more conference titles than us over that span.

i agree about the recruiting aspect but to counter that…you could spend a ton of $ for elite portal players to fill gaps for next season. If the team fails next year, doesn’t matter, new coach, etc. if the team has a great year, recruiting would likely flip to the positive. So one real bad year recruiting. Sucks but it end of the world.

all likely doesn’t matter since most likely a new staff anyway.

Somewhat agree...but the portal works both ways and you will lose a lot in transition. And the portal window has been reduced, so you can lose guys that don't know the new coach plus not have the time to replace them in the portal.
I see no way you can wait on a coach to be hired beyond the end of the regular season without the roster taking a huge hit

True. He's been kind of hit/miss in portal though. A little slow in his process as well.

92 I think you missed Wanne's point. I actually agree with you and with wanne. The only time we hired the coach that bama probably would have hired is SOS and Urban. They were both proven winners. When AL hired last two coaches they hired proven winners in Saban and Deboer. When we have job openings we hire unproven sunbelt coaches and pinch pennies. I agree we don't want to hire based on a saban tree but I will say if Lane says no this Curt Cignetti is looking pretty good. He is not my 2nd choice after Lane but he should be interviewed if he keeps this up.

Coach O is stealthy now and living a great life. Good for him.

Nah, I get his point. It's the conventional wisdom. "back up the Brinks...", hire the best name out there--from Chip Kelly, to Brian Kelly, on down--and imho, I don't think we've screwed up on that end unlike others who apply monday morning qb'ing. The last 4 hires went sideways, and only Mac seemed like a looooonng shot. Champ was CIC; Mullen was prior OC here, and SEC coach; and Billy had the stamp of approval of Saban himself.

Meanwhile, Chip Kelly has face planted, Brian, not terribly impressive, Scott Frost, face planted, Lane--imo, not all that impressive.

But there are simply no guarantees, far less today, than before NIL took hold, and portal.

Note: Nick Saban retired. He'd surely have stuck around a bit longer, if not for the tectonic shift in terrain. Meyer bailed for the NFL, no desire to return (I'm sure he sees the same terrain).

So, as I've posted b4, we're at a monumental tectonic shift in landscape--trying the same ol' shit that worked yesteryear--in the era of the head coach that was basically ushered in with Knute Rockne's dynasty, and reigned supreme through Nick Saban--is simply no longer operative.

We don't know for sure how things will play out, but we have to recognize the degree of change, and ought to plan accordingly--not just go about bidniz as usual, when clearly it's not.

It's a damn good time to think new and innovative approach, and to discard the old ways.

My proposal (still very much in the rough) is just one idea; I'm sure others can and will come up with others.

But clinging to yesterday's ways, is an almost certain loser, and anything Bama, imo, IS a certain, proven, loser (for us).

    jmho/fwiw.

Fair enough. I was more meaning on field results exclusively. The Grantham thing was the worst, but he had at least fired him near the end and I always wondered what if...

Gotcha. I do get why it could seem that way though..as I was on the Mullen bandwagon longer than most.

I was with Mullen until the start of 2021. Retaining Grantham and not bringing in more viable qb options had me concerned. Seeing him run the clock out at halftime against Kentucky was probably where I gave up on him altogether. Basically similar to Napier not hiring an OC and then the performance against Miami is what did me in on Napier.

Agreed. If administration does make a move, it absolutely needs to have the right person for their next hire. Firing Napier seems like an inevitability but honestly moving on from him (this year) and making a hire that potentially has lateral results in the next 4 years is an even worse prospect.
