He doesnt have all day if he wants to win it all. His mindset is the question. He can take it easy at idiana and stack millions for a couple years and enjoy the rest of his life at ease. Some people arent happy unless they are doing what they love and it is football for many coaches. If you told me i could have tge cash but i cant go to sports, fishing , or music, id decline the cash.

To a degree but personnel dictates calls too. Napier called 4 passes over 40 yards as soon as DJ took over but he had very few with Mertz.

At least he and his family will be financially set now. Dropping down to start his HC career at Elon was a significant sacrifice, that has now paid off BIG time. More guys should take notice of his path. If you’re the goods, it will pay off. Some guys would get exposed though, and that’s why they won’t do it his way.

The excuse was that our WR's weren't up to the level of the prior year, and they weren't. But their play in the NFL proved that they could compete with anyone at the college level. They just never tried the entire year to establish a high octane passing attack that they needed in the SEC game. We saw what Tebow and those WR's could do in Tebow's final college game....they could have done that the entire year and been a finely tuned machine by Dec had they run a balanced offense instead of pounding the rock for 12 games. No wonder it didn't work out against a really good team that sold out to stop our rushing attack.

I was at that game and Penn State sucked anyway. Do you think that would actually work on sabans defense? It just wasn't that dynamic of an offense.

and I don't think it was Percy Harvin as a receiver that made it so hard to defend. It was him as a runner out of the backfield. The dive play, Tebow off tackle or Percy busting around the end was just impossible to defend, and then our receivers were one on one every single.

I think the calls may have been more similar than you think. DJ made the reads and throws, Mertz hit the quick routes and check downs.
It’s like all the people complaining about not running Richardson more when he had the option to run on almost every play.

    Penn St?

It wasn't a function of the offense, but the offense kept running out 3 and outs and allowed Bama to get a lead that they couldn't overcome. The offensive game plan was poor. Agree that the Sugar Bowl foe was not that good, but they were undefeated.

I don't think many teams were able to stop Tebow and the run like Bama did but yes that's a terrible game plan because as it unfolded, it looked pretty obvious that it could work if you had the personnel to stop it

We got behind and were forced to throw which it appeared we hadn't practiced much all year (certainly not in the games). It made us one-dimensional and that is never a good thing. Defense was definitely suffering a from a Carlos Dunlap sized hangover. Uncalled blocks in the back weren't helpful.

That Alabama team was pretty darn good and the beginning of Saban’s dominance. I don’t think saying we could have beaten them “easily” is being realistic.

Getting to the top is a challenge, staying on top is even harder. Few have done it. Urban showed he could get to the top, he clearly struggled to maintain it. Saban was the greatest. I also think there are very few programs where it can be done. Bama was a perfect storm for Saban. With college football now going in the NFL direction I don’t think we will see runs like that.

We didn't even beat them "easily" in '08. It was a war.

I don’t think Billy called 40 yard passes, I think it’s more a decision of DJ to take a shot down field. In other words on the same call Mertz might choose to check down while DJ chooses to give it a rip

Maybe one of Tim's tools was over-used. Trask didn't have that tool:

    Single Game Passing Yards
    Rank Player Yards Year Opponent
    1 Tim Tebow 482[5] 2009 Cincinnati
    (Sugar Bowl)
    2 Kyle Trask 474[6] 2020 Georgia
    Kyle Trask 474[7] 2020 LSU
