Pretty sure my first choice is Lane and then probably Gundy but I have a weird feeling there is something to do with this recent Gruden talk of coaching in college. I have a feeling UAA is going to follow the national perception of Gruden and see if the perception is he deserves another chance to coach again. Note to Tilly that Gruden comment is not from my inside source you know about. I am just speculating.
I'd rather keep Napier then set the place on fire with Gruden. We laughed for years at the vols and their weird Gruden obsession.
Jon Gruden 'Interested' in Return to Coaching at CFB Level After 2021 NFL Exit Former NFL head coach Jon Gruden is open to working in the college ranks and might garner some consideration, according to CBS Sports' Brandon Marcello. "Yeah, I'm interested in coaching," Gruden told Marcello. "My dad was a college coach, I was a college coach at Pitt, my wife was a cheerleader at Tennessee when I met her. Hell yeah, I'm interested in coaching. I know I can help a team, I know I can help young players get better, and I know I can hire a good staff, and that's the only thing I can guarantee. But yeah, I'm very interested in coaching at any level, period." Marcello canvassed some people around college football and reported that a handful of athletic directors "hesitated to say whether they would interview him but all agreed Gruden would likely receive interest from some schools." Gruden hasn't coached since his resignation from the Las Vegas Raiders midway through the 2021 season. He stepped down after email correspondence surfaced in which he used racist, anti-gay and misogynistic language.
Tilly I’m thinking let nape coach more and assuming he still stinks it up we fire him in Nov and then immediately have Gruden come up and have him meet entire team (especially Lagway). Give Gruden an interview and if it goes well maybe hire him. Now my first choice is still Lane but only if he accepts publicly while coaching Ole Miss if they are in playoffs. We cannot risk losing all our good players. Which is one reason the Gruden thing makes sense because we don’t have to wait too long and lose the team.
Yeah I'm just gonna start pushing the "Gruden to UF" narrative , true or not, why? Because it's lying season agai, which is usually reserved for the offseason, but right now I find it much more entertaining.
I agree that we don’t need an aging former coach with little college exp and no exp with recent NIL and recruiting developments. That said, if we somehow did hire him, I’d find a way to convince myself that he’s the absolute perfect candidate for our problems before eventually determining that he’s the worst coach in D1 history while claiming that I knew it all along. Then I’d push for hiring Bob Stoops as a replacement.
Perfect way to implement the GM and HC setup. Get a recruiter and then let Gruden do actual coaching stuff. This is the only setup in which I would take him as a permanent hire. Otherwise I think interim would be a good proof of concept for him and a potentail high risk high reward interim.
