Billy is the opposite of analytics. For a supposed smart school we do not analytics at all. At best it’s a high school quality analytics team
If this is in reference to the remainder of this season, I can agree. If this comment extends beyond this season, I couldn’t disagree more.
With how Billy reacted after Ut called timeout - smiling and laughing on the sideline…I don’t think he had any intentions of running that play. He was smiling because his strategy to line up for 2 caused UT to burn a timeout that they may have needed to drive for the fg worked. If UT didn’t call timeout Billy would have and kicked then xp.
I don't disagree necessarily. Its all a calculated risk. I was 100% in on Billy, but the Miami game looked exactly like all the other bad losses. I expected evolution. Growth. We havent seen ot and its a shame. As for Lane, he will give relevance to the brand and attract QB's. Historically Florida needs a rockstar QB. Lane can get those.
I will let him know that he should side with the millions in athletics as opposed to the billions or possibly even trillions of dollars in research and development. Those people are not stupid. They are trying to insure the greatness of UF in the larger scheme of things. Win at football and all sports if one can but guarantee immortality and greatness in academics and research. The real world. That is the plan, anyway. To make UF the greatest research institution in the world. And we have nothing but resources all around us available for the task.
Heck, just run your top play. No chance UT knew what was coming from that weird play. My guess is Trey steps back and takes a pass behind that wall of blockers. But no way to know what's coming there.
It is a matter of where you place your emphasis. There is only so much time and effort to expend. So smart people wisely choose where they can have the greatest impact. And that is going to be in the industrial - scientific world for UF rather than athletics. One wants to be well rounded but there is neither the time or the money to expend it in all the worlds. The board says go for the greater impact while trying to be good in the athletic world also. But one can only have one master and for us that is in the scientific academic world. Hopefully, we can do well in the athletic world also but it is a matter of emphasis. I love athletics but at UF it will take a back seat to the industrial-scientific world. Our board is choosing to try to outdo the Stanford/Cal Berkley world.
At the very least, there is an ensuing battle between this side and the football-first side. This side of the equation probably looks at the current ACC and wouldn't mind trading places with FSU in terms of the company they keep ($$$ aside).
If we are speaking of actual, tangible, quantifiable, productive research and actual scientific advancements? Then yes. Because those things speak for themselves. If we are talking about the intangibles of academic prestige then not necessarily. Much of that is a highly politicized beauty contest and gauche things like contact sports, and (even more so) the sorts of fans those things attract can be viewed as a net negative. Tolerated, of course, but certainly not something that is aspired to.
