In theory, I tend to agree with you, but given what we are getting for our money, I believe we overpaid.
Nick Saban had a solid but unspectacular record at Michigan state. He was top tier at LSU but nothing that would indicate what he would do at Bama of course how he did that at Bama is for another discussion in my opinion. The point being that apparently Jedd Fisch had quite the restoration job to deal with at Arizona. Not that I'm comparing him to Saban at all just that context matters for record. Just like if the powers that be looked into why Napier had a great record at Louisiana but also had to have no less than five 1 score games go his way to do so in just one season. That isn't a recipe for sustainable winning football. I don't know anything about Fisch or have an opinion on him. Just think that his record alone doesn't say much.
But my point stands..... If he had no ties to UF his name would never be brought up. People get to caught up in having some sort of link to UF.
Can't disagree with that and Fisch doesn't have enough history yet to know if he is the real deal or a one hit wonder but Saban's history prior to LSU was good not great and I don't believe he had any ties to LSU either yet it was seen as a pretty safe hire at the time if I recall.
I'm not arguing in favor of the point, just noting that Auburn and FSU fired thier coaches after 18 months and had no trouble getting someone, arguably their top choices.
I disagree about him being a “sure thing.” This isn’t the 2005 version of Urban and we really don’t know what we would get. It’s probably a moot point, either way, as I don’t foresee that happening.
Honestly, I would not call his time at Mich St good, it looks pretty mediocre. His time at LSU was good because he won a title. His time at LSU was Mullen, before the last year melt down. Saban went to Bama at the perfect moment. If you are comparing Meyer and Saban. Meyer did a great job at Florida and Ohio State. Saban did great at Bama.
Yeah I tempered my opinion because I didn't want to deal with the Saban worshippers. He was great at toledo and mediocre most of his time at Michigan state.
If our guy was winning, he’d be getting paid more. Stoops has won enough that they gave him almost a $3m raise to keep from getting poached. He also gets an automatic year extension at 7 wins, and two years for 10 wins.
Get SOS, Danny, Tebow, Spikes, Lagway upstairs at Spurrier's with a contract. Tell Urbs that's the lap dance room.
I believe Freeze was Auburns top choice. FSU struck out on a few others before Norvell, including the much publicized Bob Stoops in currently in the state capital signing a contract stories from their beat writers. But I get your point.
Just like his Brother Bob, Stoops is a defensive guy and puts some pretty stout, well-coached D's on the field (well, except that time they forgot to cover the Gator receivers) . His offenses have struggled at times including this year is why he hasn't been able to get over the hump.
Its probably that most are thinking the folks with those UF ties will love us, even with all our warts.
I recall lots of talk that Saban, a Big 10 coach, would never be successful at an SEC school like LSU and lots of laughs that he didn't/couldn't bring a single coach with him from MSU. Guess those folks missed the mark by a bit.
