A gm wouldn't be hiring assistant coaches....might help the head man with contacts and evals. Napier has by and large done well with the army, lot of quality staffers and they genuinely seem loyal. You can certainly find misses, but thas true everywhere.
I agree the HC is still the supreme leader and the a hm assists in talent acquisition. Once contracts rule the day the GM will be the king and HC becomes the top “assistant”
You may be right, but I just don't see the evidence of the army's effectiveness. Combine with what I'd consider a sub standard and rotating on the field staff and I don't see the optimism concerning his ability to oversee staffing. I think loyalty is very important. But being loyal to the wrong people (Grantham) or inspiring loyalty in people who aren't effective in their job can be counter productive. Again, you may be completely right about specific elements of the army that I'm unaware of. But staffing in particular is not something I would have seen as a particular strength of his that could be utilized in an imagined GM scenario. Recruiting yes. Staffing? I just don't see it.
He does not go on recruiting visits and is dead last in the big 12 recruiting rankings for two years. But sure, he'd bring in number 1 classes at UF. Because reasons. And let's wait and see how he does next year without his son and Hunter before we start saying he's a "damn good coach." Travis Hunter and Shedeur alone would probably have FSU 6-1 instead of 1-6.
Why would the offense and defense lack chemistry? I’d argue there would be more chemistry. Chemistry between O and D isn’t nearly as important. Chemistry for the guys on the field together is important We’d be able to hire the top OC and DC because of $. It is far easier to evaluate the best coordinators. Given we’d have more $ than anyone else, by far, we could even go the NFL route. We can’t find capable coordinators now because our budget is mid and our HCs aren’t focused on finding the best. They are focused on friends, their preferred scheme, etc. Would any of our recent OCs or DCs have been considered top 5 in the world at time of hire? Not even close. So make a list of the top 5 in the world and tell them we can give them a 30% raise This is why if you hire a traditional HC he needs to be A+ at something. With Napier we would have to hire top guys to cover his deficiencies. Thats best case scenario. Worst case is now, he runs the O and he cheaps out on top assistants. Napier isn’t in the top 200 OCs globally
Well played!! He did say he got him a GED a few years ago but I’m checking in to that ! I have connections
