Stop. Mullen had the indoor practice facility and the new facility coming, he had all the budget he wanted for assistants (he was just married to Grantham and Hevesy) and the recruiting issues fell on him due to lack of effort. Overwhelmingly his issues were self inflicted. Imo I think he felt he could coach his way out of trouble, when reality struck he gave up
I’ll speculate that with all the talk about setting things up similar to the NFL as far as organization structure goes, there is a guy that has plenty of experience in that type of environment and would probably do well in the NIL/transfer portal environment. I’m not a big fan of the guy, but John Gruden is out there and many would consider him a whale.
Everyone's entitled to an opinion. Mine differs from yours. And the facts are DM was very successful while here and we've pretty much been mediocre at best since he left. Grantham had been canned just before DM was. If we had kept Dan and actually went out and hired him a top notch DC and gotten our chit together when NIL started, we would've been fine. IMO. Certainly better than we've been the last 2.5 years. Even the best coaches have some bad seasons. Didn't Hairball at UM. Swinney had a 6-7 season.
Success is not measured in absolutes. Mullen was very successful his first 2 years. He underperformed in 2020 and tanked in 2021. Those were the on field results. His roster and coaching management was a steady slope downward from beginning to end. You refuse to address why he couldn't recruit a TE, WR or QB after reviving Florida's offense from the depths of bottom tier ranking in all of football. I agree Georgia, Bama and OSU were probably paying more under the table for top talent but that doesn't explain what Mullen was doing recruiting wise.
This whole "the meanie administration is holding back the football program" thing is annoying. If it's true name names and post receipts. Otherwise stfu about it already.
Never say never but Urban has said that he is not coming back to coaching. I believe him but I have been wrong before.
They say everyone has their price. If they were to make him the highest paid coach in college football and guarantee him a spot in the Ring Of Honor, who knows if that wouldn’t tweak his ego enough to come back.
Part of his shut down was being forced to get rid of Gratham and Hevesy.....they would all still be here if he hadn't had his hand forced. DM was a successful x's and o's guy that could call a good game, but given the discordand the roster talent falling like a stone I'm not remotely confident that "we would've been fine".
Me too. But you also asked us to get silly in this thread, so in that vein: Robert Saleh. Available, big name. Coached in SEC before. Good recruiter probably (?)
right. I get tired of the “imagine Mullen with this roster” talk because he would NOT have recruited or gotten a commitment from Lagway for starters. He woulda stuck with the Nick Evers, Carlos Del Rio’s of the world and been content. he didn’t have the right strategy to push Florida to the NEXT level after 2020
What's annoying is how many stupid mistakes "whoever is running the program" has made the last 15 years. I used to live and die with Gator football now I pretty much could care less. I just post on these message boards when I'm bored and have nothing else to do.
First name I thought of, but he’s done. There are no active “whales”, imho, Kirby looks to have gained the freshman 50 though.
Well, he was pretty "fine" the first 3 years. I'd take 10-3, 11-2 and even 8-4 seasons in a heartbeat now. Even at Moo U he only had one season (in nine) worse than our best season the last 3 years (assuming we don't win 7 games this year). He wasn't our primary problem. But all you DM haters will never believe that so I'm wasting my breath, err fingers.
