Briggs, teammates defend Kelly Rae Finley in first team media since Newbauer scandal
Associate head coach Kelly Rae Finley was appointed interim head coach after former coach Cam Newbauer’s resignation
    Zachary Huber Alligator Sports

The Florida Gators women’s basketball team held its first media availability since abuse allegations were levied against former head coach Cam Newbauer. Interim head coach Kelly Rae Finley and several players took turns addressing the program at the podium.

The Alligator published a story on Sept. 27 featuring multiple former Florida players under Newbauer who came forward and alleged that he made racist remarks, threw basketballs at players during practices and verbally abused the players, assistant coaches and trainers.
One of the first questions Finley received was about what she knew about Newbauer’s behavior and the role she played in it. She deflected it, attempting to shift focus toward the Gators first game against Flagler College on Nov. 5.

“Our administration has addressed the previous allegations, and our focus is on the upcoming season,” Finley said.
Cydnee Kinslow, a former player on last season’s team, accused Finley of doing damage control for Newbauer, who coached at Florida from 2017-2021. Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin and the athletic department haven’t addressed the allegations from former players that Finley swept Newbauer’s behavior under the rug. They’ve only commented on Newbauer’s behavior.

The reporter followed up and asked if Finley felt like she felt these women down.
“No,” guard Kiki Smith interjected on her coach’s behalf.
Finley continued and added she wouldn’t be here if that were the case.
It wasn’t the last time the question was brought up. Later in the press conference, guard Lavender Briggs jumped in to defend Finley. She accused Kinslow of placing false allegations against her current head coach.

“As far as Cydnee goes, she doesn’t speak for me,” Briggs said. “She doesn’t speak for the team. So, I mean, what she said doesn’t really matter.
“She’s speaking on things that aren’t even her experience and if those players wanted to speak on those experiences, they would have, they still will, but I’m pretty sure they don’t, which is why they haven’t been spoken about. So if she wants to speak on experiences that aren’t her own, then she can, but she can’t paint a narrative that’s not even true because those aren’t even her words or those aren’t even her experiences.”

I guess no reporters cared to ask any questions about the team or the upcoming season? Go figure.

Interesting comment from Briggs, but she probably needs more media training. Fully expect her somewhat misspoken comments to be taken out of context and crucified by the PC police.

Finley deserves questions, but the players having to relive it again is just wrong. As if they haven’t been through enough the last few years.
I really really don’t like SS these days.

The Alligator broke the Neubauer story, this article was a follow up at the first media avail. I think they did a good job
remember Lav was headed to or in the Portal IMO pretty significant to have her speak up for Kelly Rae

Well, that quote could easily be taken to mean she thinks her former teammate speaking about how she attempted suicide due to the toxic program "doesn't really matter". Which would certainly be a callous take.

I surely don't think that's what she meant to imply, but this is the problem with relying on journalists to write factual articles and not posting the press conference.

And I didn't think they'd post the presser at all but actually they did post a heavily edited version which actually does have some limited info on this season's team: Women's Basketball Press Conference 10-28-21

Does this satisfy the people who think Finley should have gotten the boot when Newbauer was let go?

You and I have been on these boards for years, once folks make up their mind, it is rare that they will change it good or bad
At the scrimmage last week the kids did not show any sign of reticence toward Kelly Rae I watched Kiki, Lav, Nina and Kristina pretty closely they tend to be leaders saw no change in responses

Kinslow comes out looking bad here IMO. Always felt she was way over the top and not credible. Regardless of what did or did not happen, the girls seem focused. Kelly is going to have her shot at the job. It would be ironic if we ended up having a great season and turned this into a positive story. The program could use it.

20+ wins and NCAA. Anything less and I think we probably move on.

not be named in whatever secret report is underway now. And if she survives that, show improvement from last year.

    Uphill climb for her.

I know some of us have seen the program grow and kind of know things said behind the scenes about players and I think Lav really gave an insight into what the other girls think of Kinslow. They were tolerant of her more then liked her, she spent a lot of time with other people outside of the womens basketball program last year. Now she is in another place making accusations again and gaining viewers and members on her social media. The kicker for me was she had a year of eligibility left and acted like she was wanted back when no one wanted her back on the team.

When I talk to other people Cam was very harmful to the team and Cyndi was on a much smaller scale very bad for the team. She is proving it now she was a cancer and glad she has been cut out.

She needs 20 wins, get into the tourney and probably go right around 50/50 for the league

Clear improvement on the court, support and buy-in from the players, no more drama. I'm not going to put a number on the requisite wins.

Another factor here is Striklin himself... if it's a new AD they may want to make a statement hire right off the bat. I am really starting to think he doesn't survive this. He has basically all but disappeared.
