That's a pretty succinct way to parallel it with our current situation

Agree, so we are short numbers and the prior staff proved that they couldn’t develop what little talent they did have. This doesn’t get corrected in one season

Meyer’s offense was somewhat shaky, all through 2006, until peaking for Arky and Ohio State.

Agree with comments that you can't correct inherited talent in one year. ... but in the age of the Portal- you can go out and get blue chippers who for whatever reason or looking for new opportunities. Napier seemed a bit slow of the mark in bringing in top portal guys. Plus, most here would agree that the offensive scheme is predictable, boring and about as simple and uncreative imaginable. Would elite QBs and WRs be eager to come to a program whose HC seems to have a run first bias? And, (as hard it is to believe) the D seems worse than under the former regime. I am in a wait-and-see mode but my pre-season projection of 7-5 seems a bit optimistic at the moment. Still hoping we find some magic and fire in the belly.

There was the same knock against Urbs, after a couple years, elite WR knew they would be blockers

05 and 06 were shaky until Arky as you note.
I think Bama beat us 31-3 in 05 in Bama.
06 we were two blocked FG's from losing at home to USCe.
There was plenty of grumbling about the spread not working in the SEC.

Those are all objective questions, time will tell.

We lost some good players that transferred out last year that would have helped this year and for whatever reason the new HBC chose not to get any replacements from the portal. Maybe he did and it didn't work or maybe he didn't try.
We will see in the next two years how the plan and the system works...

The thing is the zone blocking and option schemes got annihilated by Bama and lsu in 05. It's not far fetched to believe that 04 offense makes that Bama game a competitive one. Our failings for that year had everything to do with the offensive changeover

I’ve said here many times that if Spurrier came back in 05 he wins Natties in 05, and 06. The talent on those two teams was staggering. And since Zooker had to start all of them as FR and SO they were very seasoned by 05.

My suspicion/hindsight is that Mullen didn't fire Grantham in 2019 because he was not ready to do the work to find a suitable replacement. By 2020 he realized what he had done, why he had done it, and that his own heart really wasn't in it. So he again kept Grantham thus mentally cementing his own checking out.

Kind of like arguing with your girlfriend/wife. It wanders off in another direction completely to unrelated areas, and never ends up close to the original reason for the argument.:p

Just as an FYI to everyone... we were struggling in Urban Meyer's first year (2005) until the bye week.
And we had a much easier schedule that year than this year.

What helped that year was a strong finish, especially the win vs FSU and the bowl win.
If we can finish this season 4-1, with a bowl win, things will look better.

This Saturday is big. I wish I was more optimistic.

Bottom line on Mullen was he couldn’t get the players here we need to be successful. If he didn’t get fired when he did it would have been the year after. He’s a good offensive coordinator but a lousy head coach for a school like Florida.

I seriously doubt anyone is going to release details. As distorted as the relationship is, which is quite, these coaches are still "teachers" and these guys are still "students."

I've had some real bad eggs in my classes over the years, but I would never go out and advertise it. My job isn't to pillory them publicly for not having the maturity to comport themselves like a sensible adult. Sure, if I get called from employers, grad programs, and so on, I give an honest assessment of how successful I think they can be in whatever role they are being vetted for, but I'm not going to make a point to universally poison the well for someone's future endeavors because they were an a-hole at 21 or 22.

Like all of you, I'd love to know. How could you not? However, I think coaches staying mum on this stuff unless there is a compelling reason to make it public is what they should do. Is this fellow an actual danger to society, or is he just an entitled smart ass who runs his mouth too much? Unless it's the former, I see no reason to drag a kid publicly after being dismissed unless maybe the player takes it to that level themselves.

Besides, it will all be out there someday, and we'll all have it to read when it does.

If you think we have similar talent to Alabama and UGA then it’s going to be tough to have a rational conversation. There are different levels of ‘blue chips’.

Not exactly. We did officially win it in 1984. Then our wonderful “friends” in the conference decided that we couldn’t “officially” keep it and took it away.

The hypocrisy of that decision still chaps my ass. There were at least two dozen other schools that were outPelling Pell.

Yep, and that's why Meyer was getting some criticism year 1.

Perhaps that will mirror what we see now on Offense, time will tell.
The game has changed a bit in 17 years it seems.
