I was there at the West Viginia Sugar Bowl. Leaving that game, I heard for the first time several Gator fans singing "It's great to be Un-Related". A cheer I have used many times at UK, UT, and Ark.
The first Gator Bowl game I saw as a young lad living in NJ, was Florida-Tennesee back in the late 60's Considering that the SEC is now a 16 team league, is it possible that we could be matched up with another bowl-eligible (not Auburn) SEC team that we haven't played this year?. South Carolina, Missouri ,Oklahoma, Arkansas or Vandy would be fun.
I dont ever want same conference games and wish tgat was a rule for playoffs. No penn st- Indiana ans Georgia - Tennessee . I think Indiana- Georgia and Penn st- Tennessee is 100% better but they want representation of all conferences instead of the best teams in.. . They are trying to keep the sec or big 10 from having three of the four final teams.
Gasparilla Bowl... against someone good, hopefully. Edited: That's what I have heard. I hope for a better bowl game.
That’s the issue, it’s a lesser bowl, probably not playing a power conf. Team, and Friday Dec. 20th at 3:30 is a rough time. Not getting recruits excited and watching that game. Gotta beat FSU first, but gator bowl is much more impactful With national audience and honestly if we beat FSU and finish seven and five with that schedule, we deserve a bowl like that.
I was there also. I was pretty young, may have actually been my first gator game. I remember how hostile the WV fans were before the game. They thought they were going to beat our ass. They were sparse and quiet after the game.
The Gator brand, coupled with how well the Gators have been playing lately, might be enticing enough for a bigger bowl game to consider the Gators. The Gator Bowl is NOT out of the question.
I’m still hoping for the reliaquest bowl in Tampa (what use to be called the Outback Bowl) and I think things could fall that way…. Tennessee/UGA/Texas go to playoffs Citrus Bowl: Alabama Las Vegas Bowl: Missouri Liberty Bowl: Oklahoma ReliaQuest Bowl: FLORIDA TaxAct Texas Bowl: Texas A&M TaxSlayer Gator Bowl: LSU Music City Bowl: South Carolina Birmingham Bowl: Oklahoma Gasparilla Bowl: Arkansas This still leaves Ole Miss as there are 11 bowl eligible teams if only 3 SEC teams make the playoffs so idk what the bowl committees do then, but this is one way it could shake out. Birmingham and Gasparilla select after the “pool of 7” bowl games are filled and I highly doubt any of those pass on Florida if they beat FSU. Selfishly I hope they end up in Tampa. Ron Zook, Urban, Jim Mac, Mullen all got to play in Tampa which is a recruiting hot bed! Let Coach Napier have a go at it!
Yes for either Tampa Bowl. No for Jacksonville GA. As a kid I was there for Iowa v Gators. Freezing cold. never again Music City for a fun time
I agree. I want the extra practices and I want a really easy victory. I'm hoping for a game that our walk-ons and Cam Carroll can play in.
Respectfully disagree… I was there too and we were not supposed to be able to handle Iowa and their superstar QB Chuck Long, but we did and it was a Great GATOR victory! As for the temperature – it was a bit nippy (got down to 14 degrees) - but that was an extreme outlier as the Gator Bowl usually has pleasant weather. Anyway, everyone knew well in advance there was a severe cold front in town and were repeatedly advised to dress accordingly. My brother-in-law and I wore our Thinsulate snow skiing outfits along with our after ski boots and were toasty warm! (and the bottle of Jack Daniels was helpful as well……)
Nothing says rewarding a team like 14 degree weather As we all saw the field was in dreadful shape in the game against the mutts. There are better cities and better bowls.
We had tickets to the game but did not go. It was freezing in Gainesville and I worked construction back in those days. I spent the day before the game fixing broken water pipes in freezing weather and had no desire to sit in that stadium with the frozen wind blowing off of the river. Watched it on tv best we could with the fog rolling in.
I was there in the 70s when we played Maryland. It was raining, cold, and miserable. On top of that, we got shut out 13-0. Even had we won, it was still raining, cold, and miserable. In 92 we played NC State and it was so foggy you couldn't see the field. Daytime would be tolerable, but a night game will suck.
