Still need a wall to keep people from illegally entering our country. Simple as that.

Makes sense. Why don't jails do this? I mean just put a wall in the high traffic areas and then have nothing where there isn't a lot of traffic. See how dumb that sounds? IF we fortify only the areas that are high traffic now, what do you think the people trying to get to the US will do? Of course they will divert and go where we don't have a wall. Simple as that.

    Dafuq.

You are comparing the United States to a jail? We need jail-like security? Right off the top your example is deranged. What is this, North Korea?

A jail is a specifically engineered structure. A building designed for the specific needs task of locking people up. The southern border is something like 2000 miles long. We need to choose where it’s practical to have high security, in some areas it’s not even possible to have “walls” due to natural barriers. You can’t just build a wall along a river or on flood plains, for example. I assume that’s why the sociopath Abbot had the idea of putting razor wired buoys in the river. I think we need to demand more from Mexico (and Canada for that matter) in disbursing asylum seekers coming from Venezuela. But at the end of the day, there is no possibility of complete 100% security in a free country with free trade (meaning people and goods constantly crossing). That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do better, ultimately it should be flexible with our labor needs. If the jobs are there, we can and should be generous with asylum claims. If jobs are tight, we should tighten asylum claims accordingly.

I blame John Boehner for this mess when he let the bipartisan immigration bill from a few years ago die in the House. You had almost 70 Senators vote for it. It included border security funds, a worker program and a plan for those that are already here.

Simple. Walls keep people out. Like the walls of your house. Amazing. A properly built wall will keep the vast majority of people out of our country that are trying to get here illegally. The rest is you upset that walls work.

Biden is building Trump’s wall, but without the racist, white supremacist part of the wall.

Hopefully also without the shoddy construction quality and haphazard planning Trumps “pals” serviced taxpayers with.

Just like the Israeli wall keeps out thousands of Palestinian workers every day? Oh that's right, it doesn't.

Walls in jails are guarded 24/7, and people still manage to escape. How do you think we'll pay for this kind of monitoring across all 2000 miles of our border? Especially when much of the border consists of uninhabited areas not accessible by motorized vehicles?

Speaking of the difficult terrain, how do you plan to pay for wall maintenance? We've seen a common monsoon storm, an annual occurrence, already decimate Trump's wall. How much are you willing to spend to get the heavy machinery needed to first build the wall, and second, to maintain it?

Walls in high vehicle traffic area makes sense to control the traffic flow. In uninhabited areas? It's a boondoggle costing billions upon billions a year that won't do jack in stopping people from coming.

When some uneducated people try to say the Israeli Wall isn't effective just know they are full of crap. Proof is here.

West Bank security fence has been Israel's lifesaver - architect

According to Tirza, there were more than 3,000 attacks that originated from Judea and Samaria from September 2000 until the end of 2006 that resulted in the deaths of 1,622 people killed inside the Green Line in terrorist attacks.

From 2007, when most of the existing fence was up, until today, he says there have been 141 attacks from Judea and Samaria inside Israel, that led to the killing of some 100 people.

Again, how many terrorist attacks have ever been carried out by people who entered our S border as undocumented immigrants? The answer, again, is ZERO! NADA! Unlike Israel, we don't need a wall to stop terrorist attacks.

And again, the Israeli wall doesn't stop a single Palestinian worker from entering Israel.

According to security officials, around 50,000 Palestinians cross the security fence at dozens and even hundreds of different spots with holes from northern Samaria to the South Hebron Hills each day.

The vast majority of Palestinians entering Israel illegally do so to work in the country. Security officials have preferred to turn a blind eye to what has become a growing phenomenon in recent years with the understanding financial horizons bring quiet while distress leads to unrest and despair and from there terror.
50,000 a day. Tell me again how effective the Israeli wall is? And the reason Israel doesn't do anything to stop it? The Palestinians that come into Israel to work are making a living and doing ok. And generally, people doing ok don't become suicide bombers.

As for the US, our walls have been equally ineffective for the past 30 years. All they have done have added extra costs. Historically, we had very limited Border Patrol, stationed at official crossings only. We also had a guest worker program (Bracero) from WWII through 1963. But race relations and racism brought an end to the program. White people didn't like Hispanics in border states starting to band together, cause problems, and even win elections (google the La Raza movement). The result was Operation Wetback, which deported anyone who looked Mexican back to Mexico, including some US citizens. One of the most racist things in US history.

Still, the locals needed their labor, and the unofficial US policy through the 1970s was to allow Juan y familia to pass if they were headed for the fields. Very few people were stopped, as people flowed through official crossing areas. Many people returned, but as many as 1 million get relief through Reagan's 1986 amnesty program. Speaking of Reagan, he saw a major issue with illicit drugs being smuggled into the US. He started to build fortified fences along the crossing areas, which later, under Bush I, became walls. The prevailing thought was if we could control immigration at official crossing areas, nobody would be crazy enough to try and cross the uninhabited areas. And if they did, they would lucky to survive.

Oops. We forced the undocumented immigrants just coming here to work to do exactly what we thought they wouldn't even attempt. As a result, we needed more and more agents to patrol areas of the border that were once never patrolled, because there was no traffic. BP Agent numbers went from around 2,000 in the 1970s to over the 20,000 we have today. Not cheap.

In the meantime, we put up more and more wall. And who did that stop? Nobody. It did create many other problems. Like significant flooding. Much of the border areas are subject to annual summer monsoon rainstorms that can dump inches of rain in a few short hours. as the article states, it's been a back and forth between trying to allow enough water from the storms to pass, but not allow humans to do so. Again, the success rate at stopping the humans? Almost zero.

Expanding a wall across all of our border would be the true definition of a boondoggle. A multi-billion dollar endeavor that would hit the budget annually with repair and maintenance cost, all while stopping nobody from coming! The walls across our border must be built to allow water to pass through, otherwise there is the potential of mass flooding that could kill both people and animals. And anything that allows water to pass will also be manipulated by people to allow them to pass through. This is assuming the wall can even handle the storm in the first place. We've seen images that the Trump wall could not handle an average monsoon storm.

Sorry, but there is no logic to add a billion dollar annual project that accomplishes nothing. Much better to go back to the days when the majority of traffic crossed through the official crossing areas. But instead of allowing them all in without issue, we should, instead, stop and process them. If they want to work here, we can give them an ITIN, track them, and ensure they are gainfully employed and paying their visa fees. And any with a serious criminal past, or serious criminal activity while here? Deport them. Not only would we not have a billion dollar boondoggle wall that accomplishes nothing but maybe causing a major flood, we'd be taking in billions a year in guest worker fees that could pay for the program.

I've seen these drug dealers being interviewed on TV. For some reason they are holding toddlers and have tears coming out of their eyes in appreciation. Seriously though, the cartels are involved, but only as a way to cash in on people wanting to get to the US.

Biden says there is nothing he can do about funding more border wall. He doesn't believe it works. fentanyl is coming from other sources no one is addressing, I guess this is easier.

Just an FYI, before the orange one ran for president, there was a documentary about drugs crossing the border. They were digging underground and coming up through and into warehouses on the other side. It's an expensive waste of taxpayer dollars, as usual.

you identified problem #1. Crossing our border without permission, or staying here without permission should not be a misdemeanor. It should be a felony. No loopholes, no exceptions. You either have legal permission or you don’t. We need special immigration courts right on the boarder. Once in custody you have a trial within 72 hours. If guilty = deported. You can appeal from your country of origin if you wish. Any foreign national convicted of a felony in the U.S. must be deported and permanently barred from reentry. No exception. No loopholes. If you are caught back in the U.S. you are either(1) executed or (2) you country of origin must take you back and jail you for life. Problem solved. Harsh punishment is the only solution.

I don’t need proof. If you don’t have the common sense to leave with consequences outlined, you don’t deserve to be here in the 1st place. Most people don’t want to be permanently banned. Use your own common sense!

no it would not. Your suggestion is not a solution, it is a cop out. No illegal immigrant is special. Their first act on U.S. soil was to break the law. They don’t get to cut in line. Go home, follow the rules and get in line. I am open to immigration reform where we can streamline the process for workers’ visas and citizenship. But there has to be equal rules applied to everyone. We have to make US citizenship a privilege, and not a right which can be stolen. People have to earn that privilege.
