Your point on the homogenization of society’s viewpoints is, I believe, a crucial one. Indeed, Madison assumed diversity of interests across the nation and built our protections against tyranny based on that assumption. I think this article might get at the dangers to which you allude.

No greater example than the current US senate. Probably the worst offender of all this body was NOT supposed to be a statewide popular vote. It’s role was designed to be selected by state representatives and subject to quick recall in the event they went to nations capital and did not represent their needs. Current version of the US Senate is grotesque. Founders attempted to prevent this but never underestimate man’s desire for control over others

 

The mechanics of elections are fascinating in their own right. If it is a statewide office, having a statewide vote doesn’t seem overtly inappropriate to me. Who should decide when a senator doesn’t represent the interests of the state? It seems to me representatives would not be inherently superior at this task, as they are inflicted with the same illness as us voters.

The curious part of all this is that our culture has become national, so the populace simply wants our local representative to embody national values. When DeSantis busses people from Texas to Massachusetts, DeSantis’ esteem rises in eyes of the voters in Florida. And when Trump criticizes DeSantis as being a poor national candidate, his status as candidate for governor of Florida falls. Utah seems to have somewhat of an independent culture, but the rest of us citizens just seem to see left vs right now.

 

the point of the state representatives selecting their respective senators is to prevent what happens now. Chicago controls Illinois. Philly controls Pennsylvania. Atlanta is one election away from controlling Georgia. Founders were cognizant of this and designed a system that wasn’t a simple majority on purpose. We were never supposed to be mob rule …..just don’t tell the mob that as they will do their best Tourette’s impression and start ignorantly screaming democracy

 

Im definitely with you on mob rule. Madison, who I hold in great esteem, clearly had his gaze fixed squarely on protecting against it. In this case, it may be that Chicago controls the Illinois senate elections (depending how we define control), but I’m not sure it’s a superior outcome to have representatives control the outcome. I am still worried about this idea of flattening, where republican and democrat representatives aren’t going to represent idiosyncratic concerns of smaller districts. Instead, they are simply going to follow the party lines that are handed down from above. What happens when DeSantis tells the Florida congress to do something? They just do it, because the party, not the district, seems to be driving the agenda. (And again this is ultimately so because the residents of the districts allow it, if not demand it.) At least this is how I’m seeing it. But I certainly agree with you that mob rule can be just as tyrannical as dictator rule, if left unchecked. More from Madison:

Lauren Boebert’s ex-husband, shoved his thumb into the mouth of one of their sons during an altercation early Tuesday morning, just days after the pair had their own public incident at a western Colorado restaurant, Garfield County sheriff’s deputies said in an affidavit filed Tuesday.

Jayson Boebert repeatedly yelled and cursed at police officers before they escorted him out of the Miner’s Claim restaurant in Silt after what he called a “domestic violence abuse” incident with the congresswoman over the weekend, according to a second arrest affidavit also filed Tuesday.

Silt police determined the domestic abuse claim against Lauren Boebert was unfounded after Jayson Boebert recanted and due to a lack of evidence supporting the claim, according to a Wednesday news release.

Jayson Boebert was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of misdemeanor assault, criminal mischief, prohibited use of a firearm, obstructing a peace officer, trespassing and disorderly conduct in connection to both incidents, according to court records. Online records from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation show he also faces a second assault charge.

Jayson Boebert was jailed Tuesday on charges stemming from back-to-back fights involving his ex-wife, U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, and their adult son, including allegations he armed himself with a rifle when he learned their son had called 911 for help.

Court documents related to his arrest tied the charges to events following an altercation with Lauren Boebert in a Silt bar Saturday night and an early morning fight Tuesday with his 18-year-old son, Tyler.

According to Garfield County jail and court records, Jayson Boebert, 43, was released from the county jail Tuesday. His bail was set at $1,500 for the assault charge and $1,000 for the criminal mischief charge. Both are misdemeanors.

A Jan. 9 police report said Jayson Boebert began fighting with his son after Jayson Boebert got home from a bar about 1 a.m. and he saw his infant grandson sleeping in a laundry basket full of clothes. Tyler Boebert told police that his dad, whose speech was slurred, began hitting him in the legs and tried to grab his phone.

The Sun further reported Jayson grabbed the phone and threw it, then shoved his son before sticking his thumb in Tyler Boebert's mouth in a way that led Tyler to think his father was going to "pull his tooth out".

 

I'm fine with her or anyone else that is voted in to office to rep her constituents as long as she isn't breaking any laws. That is the system.

However, this idea that the right seems to have that "population centers are all homogenous and will control all thought and actions" doesn't square with reality. If anything population centers are less homogenous than rural areas.

 

She had a debate in her new district, and afterwards they had a straw poll. She came in fifth out of nine with 10 percent.
