My grandparents only spoke German when they didn’t want their 6 kids to know what they were talking about. They had to stop after a time because my aunts and uncles started to pick up some German. After that it was never spoken again in the household.

As for your grammatical concern of a modifier being in front, that’s just how the English language works. It merely denotes a subset of the immediately following word, not some kind of stated importance of “African” or “Asian” over American.
