Billy Napier Postgame Press Conference 10/28 (UGA)

We were already down in the first quarter. Punt gives better than average odds to make it 17 and game over. It happened anyway but at least we took a shot. Terrible play call though.

 

He’s so slow they would sack him.

 

The play may have not been so dumb if someone blocked the guy that ran right though our line basically untouched. Still a dumb play but block somebody and at least try to execute it.

 

Yep. Trick plays are for when your team is executing very well and you're just outclassed or maybe want to flip the coin in your favor.

They're not for when every one of your postgame press conferences contain words about needing better execution.

If we're going to lean on analytics maybe update our algorithms to run as if we only have 9 men on the field since 2 are guaranteed to be lost.

 

I think my view all along is if you really are that guy you will take what you have (which isn’t bare either) and beat the teams you should that are inferior and then find a way to beat a few teams you shouldn’t. (Mark Stoops is my reference here) The difference is if you can do that you set yourself up to win some of those recruiting battles because you are Florida and it’s a premier destination. If you just fall flat on your face you will always just be middling on recruiting and never get over the hump. I hope we can put together some better performances down the stretch and hang on to or even expand this class and then attack the portal as well for some maturity.

 

You should stay away from tricks, they’ll definitely give you iches.

 

Here's my analytics, and I don't even know play terminology. There's a play that almost always seems to work when near the goal line and trying to score. (I don't know what the play is called except maybe "easy score.") The QB rolls to the right and simply tosses the ball to a receiver running to the right and the receiver steps into the end zone. If it works so well near the goal line, why shouldn't work it anywhere on the field to get a couple of feet? For that matter, why don't teams run this play every time when near the goal line, instead of calling something really dumb like running right into the middle of the line for no gain?

 

Gotta disagree with you here Rick... It was definitely about execution. I will almost guarantee that if we would have tried to run it up the middle, we would have been stuffed. Then, the naysayers would be saying a complete 180 about how stupid it was to try to run right up the middle against UGA and that we should have been "creative". Fact is, we probably had a better shot at success running the trick play, due to UGA's D-line dominating our O-line. That play wasn't set up just to get the first down. If it worked, it would have been a huge gain or possibly a touchdown. I love the call, hate the execution.

Our O-line is definitely our weakness. It is damn near impossible to win a game against a team with UGA's D-line when our O-line is so mediocre. I said it before this game, and will say it again: I absolutely LOVE everything CBN is doing, but, my only real concern is O-line and O-line recruiting. I realize that O-line is probably the hardest position group to recruit/develop, so I'm hoping that it's all in the works and it will just take a little bit more time. It's obvious that CBN knows talent and can develop it (see: Torrence), but I just haven't seen much at UF yet. I'm hoping in the near future we will see some diamonds come out of the rough like we did with Wilson, Boardingham, etc.

Hindsight head coaches will bemoan whatever play was called that didn't work, the only thing that varies is the intensity and credibility of that whining. In my 20/20 critique I just don't like trick plays vs assignment sound defenses, you are hinging your success on them failing.

 

I’m not a fab of reverses either. Especially when a D lives in your backfield.

If we were on the other 30, it is one thing.

But hey, I am old and cranky, ymmv

 

The part that really got me about the trick play wasn’t that we went for it on fourth down, I feel like that was a solid decision because we needed to do everything in our power while we had some semblance of momentum, but that we went away from what was working up until that point. If you think back on it our running game was working up until that point and inexplicably instead of going with what was working we snapped the ball to a guy who doesn’t regularly handle snaps and then asked that same guy, who doesn’t regularly pass the ball to do exactly that in the most important play of the game to that point. It made no sense.

Asked another way, what would have been the bigger statement to the Bulldogs, fooling them on some gimmick play or lining up face to face and moving the ball when we had to and showing them we were there to play?

 

He has to say that when they lose. Bad look to blame the players when they're in over their head against a team like Georgia.

Loading the roster gives you a much greater margin for error so you can win without being forced to call a perfect game every week. Just ask Kirby.

Unfortunately, that takes time.

 

What is your source of information oh wise one?

 

I actually liked the trick play, had it worked. Like someone else mentioned, there was a player that went unblocked and diisrupted Etienne. I thought Mertz was about to run a QB sneak, but then they hiked the ball through Mertz's legs to Etienne who went to run but pulled up to throw, it looked lime he had a little issue getting g the right handle on the ball to throw and it caused a slight delay. I was fooled on what the play was gonna be and I'm sure others were too, had the play been executed correctly it would have been a great call and a huge momentum builder.

The bigger question is why we were in 4th down and a yard to begin with after they reversed the original 1st down mark after a BS video review.

 

Ga was extremely disciplined on Defense. Every trick we tried they had a spy or a guy staying with his assignment. Wrong defense to be trying to trick. We were moving the ball on the ground at that point in the game. No need for trickeration

 

Probably a fair criticism. Same thing can be said of the reverses. Just not a team you’re going to run those well on especially if tackles getting owned.
