not sure. I have not studied American English dialect linguistics. Anecdotally, I don’t use “tubular” any more. It may have been “woke-ed-out’ of our language or I suspect it is just people grew out of surf culture.

I think you are confusing 2 things. Sure language evolves & I am sure linguists have a deep knowledge of that. My pt is that some of this has little to do with the dynamics of linguistic evolution. I am gonna try to put tubular back in my vocab...I love slang.

Yeah, some phrases are less obvious. I find that phrase particularly clear and insulting given our government’s history of screwing over American Indians in so many different ways.

Saw a snippet of their conversation where Joe was saying how Biden was just as much of a liar as Trump, and I had to turn it off..

“Oriental” may not be the correct word to use but it certainly isn’t racist.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Those who call someone racist for disagreeing on anything or who fixate on race are far more likely to be the racists themselves.

I very rarely see any type of racism in small towns in the south. In fact that is typically where whites and blacks typically get a long the most. Despite the history and what modern leftists want us to believe you aren't seeing blacks hunted in the streets.

Where do I see more racism? Places like Portland, Boston (where I've seen by far the most outward racism), Chicago and St. Louis. All liberal enclaves. There is also the bigotry of low expectations, where liberals genuinely think black people can't remotely compete without their help. Without accommodations being made and standards being dropped. It's absolutely abhorrent racism.

But why would the left and the likes of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton ever want it to end? That's the reality, the left wants to make sure race is here forever. They don't ever want America to truly go into a post racial era. Why? Simple, then they are no longer needed. A post racial society is a society where Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton types are no longer needed. You never help make your own job obsolete. It's sad but not surprising.

That's an easy argument to make when you define racism strictly as "whites aren't hunting blacks for sport."

Meanwhile, we have 2 states denying the setup of majority black congressional districts as ordered by the SCOTUS and nazis marching in front of Disney World. And FYI, the people involved in both of those examples don't vote for Democrats.

I grew up in a small town and there was plenty of racism from housing, schools, jobs etc. To think otherwise is either naive or political speak. Just because the Klan isnt marching down main street doesn't mean there isn't racism.

I take your point. Though if this is all that was meant, a different comparison might have been more appropriate. “kygator is just like Hitler in that they both have four chambered hearts” isn’t an untrue statement, but it is one that would probably have many questioning the specific example.

Exactly. A comparison to a violent, murderous group like the KKK isn't OK because you didn't mean the violent, murderous part. Anymore than the Hitler comparison.
Does anyone think we'd have a thread is Maher had made a more truthful comparison "the woke left is as obsessed with race as an affirmative action officer is"?

Ramaswamy recently called Congresswoman Pressley one of the modern grand wizards of the Klan. Not sure where people are getting such stupid and insulting analogies.

Ramaswamy knew exactly what he was doing when he made that absurd comparison. It's essentially another example of Vivek's attempt to model himself after the current de facto leader of the Republican Party. Just my opinion I think that Ramaswamy is running to be Trump's running mate and in the unlikely chance that Trump fades pick up his support.

I used that term for the last time when I was about 25. I called an Asian doctor oriental. He took it well and said he wasn’t a rug he was a person. Rugs are Oriental. People are Asian. I made two comments like that in my twenties and learned from them the other was a slur/compliment about Jews being good with money. I wonder if in today’s society I would be able to learn and become a better person.

It was directionist and lacked the clarification brought by referring only to people on the east side of the largest and most diverse continent on the planet as Asians.

Good point. Comparing people to someone evil because of one similarity that isn’t the evil part of their existence is extreme. It’s the kind of thing Hitler would do. :)

I think bill Maher has decided he has peaked in audience so he is constantly sucking up to right wingers to expand his audience. RFK Jr has gone the same route.
