The Military is stripping Civil War battle lineage from National Guard units. I would say that 158 years have passed and its time. Here is the official military communication. I didnt hack it, its on the internet and reddit. Also link to news site. OFFICIAL MESSAGE: b. HRC Homepage These Southern National Guard Units to Toss Confederate Battle Streamers At least 48 units from mostly southern National Guard units have been directed to remove Confederate battle streamers from their units' guidons, which serve as ceremonial flags often held by a soldier in a formation. Streamers hang on top of a unit's flag and are awarded for participating in wars or specific battles ranging from the colonial era to the Global War on Terrorism. In total, there are 491 streamers set to be removed.
While I get that "History is written by the victors", I also wonder that by purging everything having to do with the Confederacy we also start to move into the realm of "Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it".
Sadly, your quote has been replaced by “Who controls the past controls the future: who control the present controls the past.”
Perhaps, but I think we're going about it the wrong way. Please understand that I'm not questioning the motive here, I'm questioning the method.
And how long will it be before everything is removed and there's nothing to remind anyone that it happened in order to be able to teach it? Again I'm not questioning the motive, I'm questioning the method.
Should Germany not remove the swastika and any other symbol of that time? That’s what we’re talking about here - symbols representing a reprehensible “philosophy”.
Only one problem there. The swastika was originally a Buddhist symbol for peace. Yes it was appropriated by the Germans changing the meaning behind the symbol into something reprehensible. But at the same time purging it from society is not the right answer. This isn't a morality question. This is a rationality and methodology question. And as human beings, we should have the ability to rationally discuss right and wrong without purging everything that we believe is undesirable.
Do you think people need honorifics in order to remember to teach it in history class? Or in museums? Or in documentaries? Or in any of the mediums where actual teaching occurs?
I think you’re confusing teaching and discussing with public display. We should remember and teach the past. We should not honor it, which is, I believe, the intent of the public displays. Is there in your opinion another reason for, the statue of a confederate solider in a city park, or the Swastika?
How about it simply being a reminder of the past? I don't even necessarily disagree with this specific instance of removal. I do disagree with the sum total of things. It's not going to be just this statue or that guidon. Eventually it's going to be everything because that's just proven to be human nature.
