I don’t think any actual orbital launches take place there though? Or would they in the future? I thought they generally wanted launches directed near a major body of water in case something goes wrong. This is a political football, and Trumps move was almost certainly political even if Huntsville is a legit space town. The thing is, even if we want to pretend the original move was completely apolitical, with Tubberville’s ongoing bs and the crazed abortion laws in Alabama how can anything “federal” be in Alabama? They want to dictate terms to women AND they don’t want to allow them paid leave to leave the state AND they want to force people to relocate there? Umm… yeah good luck with all that.
I believe there are plans for a commercial launch site outside Denver, but I'm not positive. But otherwise, No. This was done by Trump in the last week of his presidency and was 1000% political.
You probably know Peterson AFB is the host of the Air Force Space Wing. It is also the site where organizations like NORAD and USNORTHCOM have a presence. It’s a smart no move.
It should have moved to Huntsville. It had already gone through a pretty vigorous vetting procedure and Huntsville was hands down the best choice. When Trump made his statement that he chose Huntsville, the process was already complete. All he did was muddy the water and make it political. Secretary of the Air Force Kendall had recently said Huntsville was the best choice. Biden over road his recommendation. The only good thing from a Huntsville perspective is less people will come and overtax the existing road system that is already in need of fixing
This is HQ. Launches are most advantageous near the equator, where the Earth is spinning “faster.” At the North Pole you have basically no momentum. The further you get away from the equator the more “help” you lose. To put it another way, if you were standing on the north pole, you’d move almost nowhere in a day. At the equator you’d move 25,000 miles in the same time. Disaster over water is def better, but not the determining factor. Launches and especially the big ones need to get this boost. Denver is basically same latitude as Wallops in VA where smaller rockets launch routinely. Denver could conceivably be a viable pad like Wallops. Plus less force of gravity there, although marginal.
Why should anything of import be in Huntsville, Alabama? Freshman Senator Tuberville needs to learn there are consequences to his actions. While Ron White was correct, "you can't fix stupid," you sure as hell can punish it.
You are an expert on stupid based on your comment. You obviously don’t know anything about the city. I’ve lived here for 40 years.
Been to Redstone many times, and Huntsville is a great town. But it's not everyone's cup of tea. A little difficult to attract talent there in the near future
Biden should tell Tuberville that if he continues to block military appointments (which is the most dickish thing a politician could do), Biden will relocate every single soldier out of Alabama and close the bases there.
I should be, I have to deal with much of it here. Thank you. When you rose up in righteous indignation over the perceived slight against the glorious place that is Huntsville, Alabama, you failed to understand this is a knock against Tommy Tuberville, the stupidest member of the US Senate. After completing your meal of Moon Pies and RC Cola, try rereading the thread.
