and Tuberville comes unhinged. It was a Trump payoff / pay back to move it from Colorado Springs to begin with. ie a stupid decision borne of self interest and punitive intent. I bet a lot of space force employees are really happy about this decision Tommy Tuberville Furious as Joe Biden Strips Alabama of Space Command (msn.com) After the decision not to move Space Command to Huntsville, Alabama, was announced on Monday, Tuberville released a furious statement accusing Joe Biden of having made a disastrous mistake. Newsweek has contacted Space Command and the White House for comment by email. The senator said Huntsville had been selected "over 59 other cities on the basis of 21 different criteria." However, "as soon as Joe Biden took office he paused movement on that decision and inserted politics into what had been a fair and objective process." Tuberville said it was shameful that the decision was announced with Congress in recess. He urged the GOP-controlled House Armed Services Committee to investigate "whether the Air Force illegally used taxpayers' dollars to upgrade facilities in Colorado Springs."
Partisan BS aside, why shouldn't SpaceCom be located in either Huntsville or near Canaveral? It probably has a better alignment with NASA than with NORAD.
I can see both sides. I agree Space Command being in Huntsville/Canaveral/Houston makes sense given the existing talent pool and infrastructure already in place in those locations. However, as I understand it, Space Command is less about research and more about military objectives - granted there is a lot of overlap there. Summer before last, we were in C-Springs for our son to meet with AFA coaches and got an offer to play football there - so I might have some bias ; ) (And, no he didn't accept the offer.) What they did show us - mostly plans - looked pretty impressive. Then again, they could probably do the same at the other locations. Either way it's going to be expensive and, like many, I also question the need for the project at all.
In an utter overplay of his hand the Senator watched in horror as Biden ran the kick-off back for a multi-billion dollar touchdown, danced in the end zone, spiked it, and turned to the sidelines to watch Tubs cry. Tuberville was always a shit tactician. Welcome to the SEC of politics dumbass.
"Formally created in August 2019, the command was temporarily based in Colorado, and Air Force and Space Force leaders initially recommended it stay there. In the final days of his presidency Donald Trump decided it should be based in Huntsville." "Proponents of keeping the command in Colorado have argued that moving it to Huntsville and creating a new headquarters would set back its progress at a time it needs to move quickly to be positioned to match China’s military space rise. And Colorado Springs is also home to the Air Force Academy, which now graduates Space Force guardians, and more than 24 military space missions, including three Space Force bases." WaPo
Space Command has a complicated history and an evolving mission, but it's been around in some form or other for over 40 years. All, or most of it, in Colorado. Absent a compelling reason for a move that would inevitably cause disruptions, I see no reason for SC to leave Colo. "Air Force Space Command, activated Sept. 1, 1982, is a major command with headquarters at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo. AFSPC provides military focused space capabilities with a global perspective to the joint warfighting team."
