Matt Shay was an interesting interview this morning…

    Dumb things in America:

    1. making shoplifting a misdemeanor
    2. Retail stores not hiring security
    3. Organized crime able to sell stolen goods on online marketplaces like eBay, Amazon, or Facebook marketplace
    4. Retail companies using supply chains distribution centers (where the most shrinkage happens).

Retail shopping is on its way out. In a perfect world, I never leave my house. Everyone comes to me.

Not so fast my friend. If you look at mall traffic it has been on a study rise. People still want places to go outside of the house

Although anecdotal number 2 is definitely true. My son is employed in retail management. Although losses through shoplifting were a definite problem the store had a single employee responsible for security (if I recall his title was something like loss prevention officer). The guy worked 40 hours a week in a store that was opened 80 hours a week meaning that there was no security at all during at least half of the store's business hours and to top matters off company policy expressly prohibited other employees from intervening when they observed shoplifting in progress. Apparently, the policy hasn't hurt the company's bottom line. Also noting that predictions of the death of retail stores may be a bit premature.
This Retailer's Profits Were Up 22% Last Quarter, and It Just Raised Guidance. Time to Buy?

I got a “come on” from @fredgarvin … what’s the come on? Shoplifting should be a felony. The downward change to misdemeanor is dumb. Does @fredgarvin think shoplifting should be not criminalized?

I thought it was related to the value of what was stolen. Or are they saying no matter the total value of the theft, it is a misdemeanor?

I'm sure in most cases, regardless of whether it exceeds a certain monetary value threshold, it goes down as a misdemeanor, if not totally dropped completely in some jurisdictions. That deterrent ship sailed when we began saying it was okay to riot and/or protest in close proximity to others during Covid, but not okay to go to church.

I haven't seen this much shrinkage in Dicks since George Costanza.

"We thought we had adequately reserved for it. However, the number of incidents and the organized retail crime impact
came in significantly higher than we anticipated, and that impacted our Q2 results as well," Dick's Chief Financial Officer
    Navdeep Gupta explained.

This is just the excuse they need to make America cashless... I do not like this one bit.

    All part of the plan.

I'd love to see a cogent explanation as to how this has anything to do with Biden.

Adding the caveat that I have no idea what the law is every state that's generally correct. I don't know if the law has changed or not or to what extent it's actually enforced in California beginning with the third conviction shoplifting may be treated as a felony regardless of the value of the item(s) stolen, noting that the prosecutor has discretion regarding how the crime is charged. I mentioned this and although it happened over 20 years ago I recall a guy who was sentenced to a mandatory life term in California under the state's three strikes law even though his last conviction was for stealing a videocassette with a value under $50.

In every state, shoplifting is a misdemeanor up to a certain value point, above which can then be charged as grand larceny. Or if violence is involved, it can be charged as felony robbery.

What you mean by this post escapes me. (Not sarcasm.)

As gatorchamps remarked, this has NOTHING to do with Biden. Insofar as it has something to do with, say,....GASP......California, I wager to state we won't find many liberals on this site who agree with the decriminalization of shoplifting, or any crime. See how easy it is to be nonpartisan and to judge each issue on its merits. Why can't Okeechobee try it once. It's habit forming.

If someone shoplifts a $5.00 package of twinkies from Walmart, should it be a felony?
