Just missed playing a game against AD, The Meat Hook, and a few other Gator players. I was walking in just as they were finishing their last pick-up game.
Mostly known as a Gator football player and coach but Dwayne Dixon could play. Played with and against him often with noontime pick-up and intramurals. In intramurals he was a teammate for many seasons. One season he had to beg off from a critical game because he had to go to the White House as part of an NCAA football championship team. He said that he knew we could win without him and we did. I miss having him in Gainesville.
I played with Dwayne as well. One guy that I forgot to mention, but a guy that would ask me to run with him everytime he saw me was Monte Towe. He even remembered me when he would see me elsewhere. Tough little SOB!
Keefer, sounds like you and I were roaming the courts at Littlewood around the same time. Those were some really good pick-ups games at “ The Wood”. I agree, you really could not guard Moten. Under-rated , in my opinion.
Sid was a good guy and good player. John, wasn't nearly as good a player as Sid. Do you know what Sid passed away from?
Grew up down the road from Little Wood basketball courts. Played there with many through the years from the age 9 in the late 60'until the late 70's.
Lurker - Does Monte Towe and Coach Sloan running me out of practice count? Lol I was between classes and decided to catch a practice and Sloan ran me out immediately.
If Littlewood are the outdoor courts on the west side of 34th street, that’s also where I played pick-up games. That’s where I played against Tony Miller. I played there at times during the period from 1973-1976, if I am recalling correctly.
Was that the O'Dome practice court? I only got to play there once in intramurals. We were up three and passing the ball around to run out the clock and one of my teammates hoisted a three that went in. The other guy on my team that knew what he was doing said to him "Great shot. Don't ever do that again."
I didn’t know there were courts at the elementary school. Westside park is on the east side of 34th. That’s where most people play.
Great thread. Any hoopers from Jax and Burnett Park? Tons of talent from the area where there was a wide range of cultures playing hoops. True melting pot of people that loved playing basketball. Seemed like that was where all the college players visited when home for the summer.
