agreed - as a political agnostic and independent voter the last three elections, I'll admit the optics of the search are pretty crappy with the hidden selection process and a GOP senator as the only finalist, and it's likely there were political motivations at work to some extent. But even if that's the case it doesn't necessarily mean Sasse is a bad choice - give the guy a chance to come in and do the job for a bit and see what happens before we all start freaking out with the torches and pitchforks.
I was and I never cared about university policy while I was there. I was there to get a degree and get on with my life. I saw the president once, at graduation.
WTF! Do I understand this correctly? There is a housing complex specifically for the alphabet crowd only on campus? Do other groups have this as well. All male or female, all white or black? They talk about equality but have their own safe space.
Well I did some digging and you are correct. There are 16 " communities" There isn't a "white" or " straight"community Living Learning Communities - Housing & Residence Life
You have a tendency to state as facts, things that are at best opinions. Why does Ben Sass’s ability to win a state-wide election in Nebraska a key for the future of UF?
Truth be told we are all pretty much speculating or making assumptions. It's a somewhat out of the box choice so we won't really know for a while.
Background context on the overall campaign to degrade Florida's higher education system DeSantis and Florida Republicans, in an attempt to reshape the state’s 40 colleges and universities, installed GOP allies in top university posts and pushed legislation that could change tenure, limit how university professors can teach lessons on race and even how Florida higher education institutions are accredited.
Do Republicans want to eliminate all public education and privatize it all? It seems like a very long cultural war that isn’t grounded in long standing traditions of public schools.
This is long, but worth a look if you want to get some insight on Sasse's philosophy as regards youth culture and academia.
Fuchs: Protesters who enter Emerson for Sasse’s Nov. interview may be disciplined - The Independent Florida Alligator Any protesters who enter Emerson Alumni Hall Nov. 1 during Sen. Ben Sasse's interview with the Board of Trustees may be subject to discipline under the Student Conduct Code, an email from UF President Kent Fuchs announced Monday. Fuchs wrote the university would enforce a two-decade-old regulation prohibiting protests inside campus buildings. Fuchs noted one of UF's core values is to be a community that embraces openness to various viewpoints. “With this commitment comes an obligation to protect the rights of everyone in our community to speak and to hear,” Fuchs wrote. In Fuchs’ characterization of the Oct. 10 protest of Sasse's forums of UF faculty, students and staff, the student protests disrupted Sasse's ability to fully represent himself and his views to the university community.
Beat me to it. Obviously there are potential distinctions, but compare Fuchs’ concern that protests not interfere with rights of those that want to listen to the presentations with Nazis, i.e., the paramilitary arm of the anti-woke movement, causing a sold out Drag Queen Story Hour to be cancelled because of violent threats Seventy-five children and their parents bought tickets to the “Drag Queen Story Hour” event with Bridgette Galore on Saturday at the Center off Mills Avenue, said George Wallace, the center’s executive director. “It was sold out,” Wallace said. “But again, safety is first in mind. We don’t want to put anyone in harm’s way, especially kids. ... They don’t need to be subjected to yelling and seeing that type of behavior.” Wallace said local public officials and the Anti-Defamation League alerted him to online posts where extremist groups planned for 40 to 50 protesters at the event. While the LGBT+ Center has had protesters at other drag queen storytime events, Wallace said he was concerned by the escalating threats. “We have a church group that protests the center and the local Proud Boys came and were yelling ‘pedophile’ and terrible things at the parents that were bringing their kids in,” he said. “They were at arm’s length, but this Twitter thread that we saw — they’re violent.” Drag queen story hour is canceled after Nazi threats, director says - Tampa Bay Times
Almost every dorm was male/female segregated by floor at least, considering they shared bathrooms (only 1 large “communal” bathroom per floor). Probably wasn’t until the 80’s/90’s when the first dorms starting having a “suite” layout where it’s maybe 4/1 or 4/2 bathrooms (not sure if any are 4/4 like some of the off campus apartments were). So in those dorms you wouldn’t need to segregate by floor or building so much. But many of those older dorms still stand, even if they were renovated I think they must still be segregated. Only the brand new or demolished/reconstructed dorms would have more modern suite layouts.
UF Faculty is demanding the names of the other candidates suggesting Fl Sunshine Laws may have been circumvented. “If the board of trustees and administrators at the University of Florida are so certain that they have picked the best candidate out of the pool then they should have no qualms about giving out the names of all the competing candidates so that we can see why Senator Sasse was selected and why his hiring credentials were considered to be better than the credentials of the other 11 in that final group of 12, said President of UFF Andrew Gothard.” They have made a formal request for the documents.
