What makes you think DeSantis controls him? Aside from both being Republicans, they seem to be from different political orbits.
And if they know a lot about the man, what then? You're making assumptions that are pretty insulting. Is there not a valid reason to be opposed to this hire?
No, not in the manner at which they are protesting. You can dislike his politics or think he is not qualified but to storm a forum and try to drown him out with obscenities and not allow him to even speak is embarrassing.
You say this but twice he won every county in his state. His term wasn't going to end until 2027. From his senate webpage: About Ben - Senator Ben Sasse
At the level of prin His voting record is problematic - and the way Uf has done this has shit optics. I don’t blame anyone for being upset enough to protest.
His record is problematic only because you disagree with it. The university has been pushed hard left for decades, it will always remain left even with a conservative as a president. Sasse if anything may open up a little more diversity of thought on campus rather than the left group think that it has now. The idea that his appointment will drive the campus hard right and he will push draconian right agendas is just laughable.
It’s telling that someone with a very conservative voting record is considered a centrist by Republican voters, simply because he opposed the former president trying to steal the election, and throw democracy into chaos.
Pretty obvious now why DeSantis had the legislature pass a law that allows universities to conduct much of the process outside of the state’s open meetings and public records laws.
The university has been pushed hard truth for decades through a university model and has gained respect. One presidential term may be unable to totally reverse that but not for lack of trying. I agree he won’t be as bad as Corcoran, a man that really embodies the vanguard of Florida conservative “thinking.” Conservatives always think their ideas are being suppressed, when the truth is they really don’t have ideas. They aren’t being cheated in the battle of reason, they’re ill equipped to compete. Even smart conservatives have to act stupid and put on a veil of anti-intellectualism to survive in the movement. It’s absurd that conservatives are so invested in the model that if their ideas were just given a chance they would prevail. They have prevailed and they failed. That’s the reality that conservatives are facing, a complete empirical failure of their worldview.
I did not realize he was an unrepentant homophobe that still opposes gay marriage. No such person should lead a large public university. And he claims to believe in global warming but that government doesn’t have a role. That’s just stupid. People that have a problem with this hire will find a problem with anything. It’s complaining just to complain. The best part about this is that Sasse will be hired and then these same protesters will move on to their next BS cause. Good practice for them I guess.
Totally agree. The liberal way the world is heading looks promising. Pandemics, wars, global inflation and a collapsing economy. Winning!
Chances are good the hey ho he's gotta go crowd hasn't the slightest idea the content of his voting record...didn't even want to listen to what he had to say.
Yawn, where did this empty line even come from. To “tolerate”, you have to disagree with something, but allow it to be. Historically, it is the Right that tolerates, BUT to the degree they are forced to by law. The Left does not need to “tolerate” what it accepts, approves, or condones, and tolerance should not be asked when it comes at the expense of somebody else’s existence or well-being. If given, it is providing a tactic endorsement. The Left has never tolerated intolerant ideas used to oppress by the Right, and the country is much better off for it.
And tolerance of intolerant ideas used to oppress, flies directly in the face of that doesn’t it? It’s such a shallow empty retort from conservatives looking to somehow deflect or falsely equivocate.
So 18-21 year old college students preconceived notions now get to be the final arbiter of intolerance? Sadly, any views to the right of AOC are intolerant in their world.
I have to admit, that the only time I felt that a UF President had a direct impact on my life during college was when Machen hired Meyer and I finally witnessed the Gators beat the Vols and Noles in the same season
