Unless I misunderstand how NIL works, it isn’t paid out by the school or show up on their balance sheet.
Not sure how much longer I can follow college sports. I believe you are correct. Neither the UF nor the UAA pay out. Don't ask me how it gets done because I have no idea, and the program is obviously calling the shots. It's a wild west frontier, basically.
It’s not, but that’s my point. The economics of the sport don’t support what’s happening, so now boosters are being asked to just piss even more money into the wind to keep up. It’s beyond dumb.
If you believe the rumors, Rashada was WAY worse. I realize this is basketball and not football, but still the NIL era IS the Wild, Wild West.
Yes exactly, taking in 1/3 of their REVENUE….who knows what it costs to run that program. For us I can’t imagine having our own plane for road-trips is cheap, for example
If you just watch the sports and ignore the money stuff why does it matter? Even with pro sports, I don't follow how much the players make and their contracts, but I know many fans do and are even experts on salary cap and what their team's finances are. To me, that's a higher level of commitment than I think is necessary to enjoy the sport. The most I really do with respect to money is question whether player A or player B is really worth the contract they get.
At Binghamton, if I got a burger, fries and a coke at the snack bar, before I sat down my friends would have taken sips from my coke and half of my fries. Some of those freeloaders went on to fame and fortune including Tony Kornheiser and Jay Lovinger. Jay’s success story is mind boggling. He was at Binghamton before I got there and was there well after I left. He hung around the snack bar and the gym for years. We would meet once in a while at Monticello Raceway to play the ponies. And then he became an enormous success. Do a search on him. It’s quite a story. Unfortunately, he passed away several years ago.
If anyone has an interest in journalism, linked below is a lengthy, but extraordinary piece about Jay Lovinger, the guy who just hung around the snack bar and gym in Binghamton for years. The Man Behind the Curtain | The Stacks Reader
Sure, I get it. But I don't follow professional sports at all. I haven't even watched a Super Bowl in probably ten years. I can't stomach by all the bitching and whining by semi-literate boobs that make more in a year than I made in a whole career. And now college sports is stumbling down that path.
I won’t get too deep into it: I will just say as someone who is close to some professional players in multiple leagues and knows even more, your comment calling then semi illiterate boobs says a lot more about you then them.
exactly. No one says a word about how much the owners make or the industry, but the players, for some reason it’s offensive they should get their due. Why does anyone care. Hmmm
Back to transfer portal stuff, I can say our staff is making some inroads with guys. It’s a little quiet now, but behind the scenes things are progressing and staff is doing their thing.
getting paid and their dues is fine, it's just the pendulum has swung in the other direction a bit far...the ship may right itself eventually, but may not as lot of deep pockets around the country have a lot of passion for their college teams and will dump truckloads to bring someone to play for their alma mater...even if the player could care less about the school's alumni or tradition (or education). But alas, that's not much different than any other professional sport. I just hope these kids understand that as professionals they must perform. No more training wheels
that's good to hear. Do you know how many more spots we're trying to fill and in which positions now that we should have a pretty firm number how many have left us for the portal? I would imagine a top PG is our focus, then another big and '6-7/6'8 wing would be nice
For sure a guard, although not necessarily just a PG. Think combo, then for sure a true 5, and then look for us to try to find some size at the 3 spot if it’s possible. I expect at least a class of 4 with a chance at 5. A mixture of proven talent and upside. I also will say while I have an idea of a couple guys, this is a moving target kinda thing. Player movement, negotiations etc.. From what I hear though and this won’t surprise anyone our staff does a really good job in this area and really does their homework.
perfect, that's what i would have expected, as much as I'd love to have a pure PG. Since Handlogten looks like he might be ready this fall I like the idea that one of those spots is looking for a lengthy 3....that's one area we lacked this year. Maybe we'll see Haugh play the 3 too, he looks like he has what it takes
