1868 The Forest Citys, an amateur team organized by the Forest City Baseball Club in 1865, endure a devastating defeat when the Philadelphia A's pummel them, 85-11. A professional Forest City team will take the field next season, losing the first pro baseball game in Cleveland when they drop a 25-6 decision to the Cincinnati Red Stockings at Case Commons.
1911 Red Sox owner John I. Taylor announces he plans to lay out his new ballpark on a little more than eight acres of land in the Fenway section of Boston. The $650,000 project, scheduled to begin in September, with James McLaughlin serving as chief architect and the Cleveland-based Osborn Engineering Company, a well-respected firm involved in the design of Yankee Stadium, Forbes Field, and Tiger Stadium, responsible for the civil engineering services.
1936 Joe DiMaggio becomes the first Yankee and fifth player in major league history to hit two home runs in one inning. The 21-year-old rookie outfielder's homers come in the fifth frame in an 18-11 rout of the White Sox at Comiskey Park.

1946 Traveling at dusk in light rain en route to Bremerton, eight Spokane Indians players and skipper Mel Cole die when their team bus veers off a Cascade Mountain pass road to avoid an oncoming car approximately sixty miles east of Seattle. Jack Lohrke, a future infielder with the Giants and Phillies, will become known as 'Lucky,' having left the bus at its last stop to report to San Diego 15 minutes before the accident at Snoqualmie Pass on Washington's Highway 10.
1947 At Forbes Field, Jackie Robinson steals home in the Dodgers' 4-2 victory over the Pirates. It is the Brooklyn infielder's first thievery of the dish, something the rookie will accomplish 19 times during his ten-year career.

1948 Salisbury Cardinals manager Gene Corbett, previously tossed from the game, instructs batboy Paul Murrell to tell the umpire to "get in the game and keep your eyes open." After relaying the message, the 13-year-old also gets ejected from the Class D Eastern Shore League contest.

 

1950 Giants' catcher Wes Westrum hits three home runs and a triple, scoring five times and driving in four runs. The 27-year-old cleanup hitter's fifteen total bases help New York defeat Cincinnati at the Polo Grounds, 12-2.

1950 Willie Mays makes his professional baseball debut, playing centerfield for Trenton, the Giants' farm team in the Class B Inter-State League. The 19-year-old outfielder from Alabama goes hitless in the game against Hagerstown in Maryland but will hit .353 in 81 games before being promoted to the Minneapolis Millers, the Triple-A affiliate of the parent club.

1953 The Braves sign right-hander Joey Jay from Middletown, Connecticut as an amateur free agent. The 17-year-old bonus baby will become the first former Little Leaguer to play in the major leagues.
1955 Senator third baseman Harmon Killebrew hits his first major league home run in Washington's 18-7 loss to the Tigers. The 18-year-old rookie, who becomes known as 'Killer,' will finish his 22-year Hall of Fame career with 573 homers.

1960 Stan Musial returns to the Cardinals' lineup after being benched by skipper Solly Hemus, who tried to implement a youth movement at the start of the season. The 39 year-old future Hall of Famer responds with a single in the team's 4-3 loss to Philadelphia.

1962 The longest game ever played in Yankee history ends thanks to a home run hit by Jack Reed in the 22nd inning. The Mississippi native's lone big league career homer helps the Bronx Bombers beat Detroit in Tiger Stadium, 9-7.
1968 Jim Northrup, who had struck out with the bases loaded in the first inning, becomes the sixth big leaguer to hit two grand slams in the same game. The 'Slammer's' power surge in the fifth (off Eddie Fisher) and sixth (off Billy Rohr) frames enable the Tigers to rout the Indians at Cleveland Stadium, 14-3.

1969 Phillies skipper Bob Skinner suspends Dick Allen indefinitely after the slugger fails to appear for a twilight doubleheader at Shea Stadium against New York. Philadelphia reinstates the 27-year-old first baseman, who got stuck in traffic after watching a horse race in New Jersey on July 20.

 

1970 In the last game played at Crosley Field, Lee May and Johnny Bench hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth to give the Reds a 5-4 win. After the game, home plate is presented to Mayor Eugene Ruehlman and then flown by helicopter to the Reds' new home, Riverfront Stadium.

1970 After fouling off a ninth-inning "Folly Floater" thrown by Steve Hamilton in the eventual 7-2 Cleveland victory at Yankee Stadium, Tony Horton asks the New York hurler to throw him the pitch again. The Indians' first baseman crawls back to the dugout when backstop Thurman Munson catches his second foul ball.
1977 Bob Watson becomes the first player to complete a cycle in both leagues when he hits an eighth-inning RBI single, leading Houston to a 6-5 victory over the Giants at the Astrodome. The 31-year-old first baseman, duplicated by John Olerud (Mets, 1997, and Mariners, 2001) and Michael Cuddyer (Twins, 2009, and the Rockies, 2014), also collected a single, double, triple, and a home run while wearing a Red Sox uniform in 1979.

1977 After Ralph Garr hits what appears to be a three-run homer in the third inning at Metropolitan Stadium, the umpire calls him out when he passes teammate Jim Essian, who waited at first base to make sure the ball cleared the fence. The arbitrators award the White Sox outfielder, known as the Road Runner, a two-run single, but the mistake proves costly when Chicago loses the game in Minnesota, 7-6.
1979 In a 5-1 defeat to Texas, future Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson makes his major league debut with the A's. The 20-year-old outfielder singles and doubles and swipes the first of his 1,406 stolen bases, a major league record.

1988 In one of the longest games ever played, it takes 27 innings for the Bluefield Orioles to beat the hometown Burlington Indians, 3-2. The Appalachian League contest, which ended at 3:27 in the morning, lasted eight hours and 15 minutes.
1992 Much to the protest of the Yankees brass, Fay Vincent permanently suspends pitcher Steve Howe for repeated drug offenses, after the authorities arrest the left-handed reliever for buying a gram of cocaine. However, in November, an arbitrator will overturn the lifetime ban, allowing the former Rookie of the Year to enjoy one of his best seasons when he saves 15 games with a 1.80 ERA for the Bronx Bombers in 1994.
1993 The Padres trade Gary Sheffield and Rich Rodriguez to the Marlins for Andres Berumen, Jose Martinez, and a little-known rookie reliever named Trevor Hoffman. The 25-year-old rookie right-hander will save 552 games during his fifteen and half years with the franchise.

1997 Randy Johnson (11-2) breaks Ron Guidry's 1978 American League record for strikeouts in a game by a left-hander. The Mariners southpaw whiffs 19 A's, 13 swinging and eight looking, but still loses the Kingdome contest, 4-1, giving up 11 hits, including solo home runs by Mark McGwire and George Williams.

2003 Brad Wilkerson becomes the fifth Expo to hit for the cycle, collecting a bunt single in the second, a double in the fifth, a triple in the sixth, and a homer in the seventh. The left fielder's 4-for-4 performance, which drives in four runs, enables Montreal to beat Pittsburgh, 6-4.

2003 After enjoying a 6-for-6 performance against Philadelphia three days ago, Nomar Garciaparra goes 5-for-5 in the Red Sox' 10-1 rout of Detroit at Fenway Park. All eleven hits are singles.

​

2004 In a slugfest at the Skydome, Julio Lugo goes 5-for-5 to set a club record for hits in a game. Unfortunately, the Toronto shortstop's effort isn't enough to stop the Devil Rays when they pound out 24 hits en route to a 19-13 rout of the Blue Jays.
2005 After Bernie Williams drops the ball in center field, the Mets become the first National League team to hit three sacrifice flies in one inning, starting with Ramon Castro's sac fly tying the game at 1-1 with David Wright advancing to third. Next, the Yankees' center fielder drops Jose Reyes' fly ball, allowing Wright to score; Mike Cameron skies to right, plating Doug Mientkiewicz, who had advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw.
2008 A bench-clearing brawl, resulting in the ejections of 15 players, with some allowed back so the teams could complete the contest, starts when the Peoria Chiefs' right-hander Julio Castillo fires a ball toward the Dayton Dragons dugout at Fifth Third Field. The 20-year-old Dominican starter will be arrested on a felony assault charge because his errant throw ricochets into the crowd, hitting a male fan.
2008 During an eventual 11-0 interleague loss to the Mariners at Shea Stadium, Brian Runge enrages Jerry Manuel when the ump appears to show up Carlos Beltran after calling a strike on the center fielder. The commissioner's office suspends the home plate umpire for a game for bumping the Mets manager during the ensuing argument, with the New York skipper and outfielder, both thrown out of the game and fined for arguing balls and strikes.
2011 2011 In their 5-1 interleague loss to the Rays at Minute Maid Park, the Astros become the first team to use three pitchers with the same last name in a single game. Houston starter Wandy Rodriguez is followed to the mound by Fernando Rodriguez in the seventh and eighth, with Aneury Rodriguez tossing a scoreless ninth frame.
2011 In New York's 4-2 loss to Colorado, A.J. Burnett becomes the first Yankee hurler to strike out four hitters in one inning. The right-hander starts the sixth frame by whiffing Rockies batters Chris Iannetta and Carlos Gonzalez, and when Chris Nelson reaches first base after swinging at a wild pitch for a third strike, he faces Todd Helton and strikes him out swinging to end the inning.

2011 Michael Kacer, a 29-year-old veteran who lost his arm during a rocket attack in Afghanistan, makes an incredible grab of Curtis Granderson's foul ball at Yankee Stadium. The event attracts national attention when the video of the catch becomes viral on the web and with ESPN including the snag in its top plays segment on SportsCenter.

2011 John McLaren is named the Nationals' interim manager, replacing Jim Riggleman, who surprised the team by quitting yesterday. Washington GM Mike Rizzo indicates the appointment is just for a few games and will name Davey Johnson as the long-term replacement in the next few days.
2011 For the second time in two years, a club plays as the road team in its home ballpark when MLB shifts the Marlins' three-game series with the Mariners to Safeco Field due to preparations at Sun Life Stadium for a U2 concert to be held in Miami. Last season, MLB moved the Blue Jays home series against the Phillies, scheduled to be played at Rogers Centre, due to security concerns raised because of protests directed at the G20 Summit near the Toronto stadium.

 

2013 At Tropicana Field, the Rays halt the Blue Jays' 11-game winning streak, 4-3, thanks to back-to-back-to-back home runs in the second inning by James Loney, Wil Myers, and Sam Fuld. The trio of round-trippers marks the second time in franchise history that the team has hit three consecutive home runs; Evan Longoria, Willy Aybar, and Dioner Navarro accomplished the feat in 2008 in Anaheim.
2014 Devin Mesoraco homers in his fifth straight game, tying a Reds' record, previously accomplished by Ted Kluszewski (1954), George Crowe (1957), Johnny Bench (1972), Ken Griffey Jr. (2003), and Adam Dunn (2008). The Cincinnati catcher's clout comes in the ninth inning of the team's 7-3 loss to Chicago at Wrigley Field.

2016 The Lexington Legends, a Class A affiliate of the Royals, give away a Glenn Hubbard bobblehead, depicting him with a snake draped around his neck. The inspiration of the minor league team's promotion is the former Braves infielder's 1984 Fleer baseball card, which he posed holding a real, eight-foot boa constrictor.

​

2018 Connecting for a home run in their 25th consecutive road game, the A's break the previous mark set by the 1996 Orioles. The record-breaking round-tripper comes in the top of the fifth inning when Mark Canha takes Carlos Rondon deep in the top of the fifth inning of Oakland's eventual 10-3 loss to the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field.
2018 The Dodgers tie a National League record, last accomplished by the 2006 Braves, when the team socks seven solo shots, dealing the Mets a crushing 8-7 loss at Citi Field. Former New York infielder Justin Turner delivers the decisive dinger in the top of the twelfth inning to complete the series sweep and extend the team's consecutive win streak over the Amazins to twelve straight victories.

2021 At Dodger Stadium, Cubs starter Zach Davies tosses six spotless innings, with Ryan Tepera, Andrew Chafin, and Craig Kimbrel each adding a hitless frame for the 17th and the first combined no-hitter in franchise history. Chicago's 4-0 victory marks the seventh major league no-no this season, equaling the record established in 1990

• • 1947 - The Dodgers win 4-2 over the Pirates as Jackie Robinson swipes home for the first of 19 times in his career.
  • 1955 - Washington rookie infielder Harmon Killebrew hits his first home run in an 18-7 loss to the Detroit Tigers.
  • 1970 - The Reds play their final game at Cincinnati's Crosley Field, beating the Giants 5-4.
  • 1972 - Culminating a long battle to reach pro baseball, Bernice Gera umpires the first game of a doubleheader between Auburn and Geneva (New York-Pennsylvania League). Several disputes take place and she ejects the Auburn manager. Gera resigns before the second game, leaving in tears.
  • 1974 - Steve Busby retires the first nine White Sox to set an A.L. record with 33 consecutive batsmen retired. The Royals lose, however, 3-1.
  • 1979 - Rickey Henderson makes his major-league debut for Oakland in a 5-1 loss to Texas in the first game of a doubleheader. Henderson has a single and double in four at-bats and steals the first base of his big-league career.
  • 1983 - Milwaukee's Don Sutton strikes out Alan Bannister in the eighth inning of a 3-2 win over Cleveland to become the eighth pitcher in major-league history with 3,000 career strikeouts. County Stadium is packed with 46,037 fans for the game, mostly to welcome back popular outfielder Gorman Thomas, who was traded to Cleveland earlier in the month.
  • 1989 - Cardinals outfielder Vince Coleman steals his 39th and 40th consecutive bases in a 5-2 loss to the Pirates to break the major-league record set by Davey Lopes in 1975. Coleman has not been caught stealing since September 15, 1988.
  • 1992 - Commissioner Fay Vincent permanently bans Steve Howe from baseball after he pleads no contest to misdemeanor charge of attempting to buy cocaine. The ban is subsequently overturned and Vincent resigns September 7 after a vote of no confidence from owners. Howe will pitch for four more years.
  • 1994 - Jeff Bagwell of the Astros becomes the 28th player to hit two home runs in one inning when he connects twice in the sixth against the Dodgers. Bagwell adds another homer in the eighth.
  • 1997 - Randy Johnson ties Steve Carlton's major-leage record for lefthanders with 19 strikeouts against the Oakland A's. He breaks Ron Guidry's A.L. mark for lefties, but like Carlton, Johnson takes the loss in his 19-K game. Mark McGwire's 538-foot home run powers Oakland to a 4-1 victory

1888 Kansas City third baseman Jumbo Davis makes five errors in the team's 10-3 loss to St. Louis at Sportsman's Park. The 26-year-old Cowboys infielder will commit 100 errors in 628 chances, finishing the season with a .841 fielding percentage for the American Association club.
1903 At Boston's South End Grounds, Beaneater hurler Wiley Piatt loses both ends of a doubleheader to the Cardinals, 1-0 and 5-3. The 28-year-old southpaw, known as Ironman to his teammates, goes the distance in each game.
1904 George Diggins, the New England League Concord (NH) Marines' nine-year-old mascot, participates in their Class B game in Lowell after the ejection of the team's centerfielder and their second baseman becomes ill. The youngest professional player in the history of the game doesn't have an opportunity to field any balls playing right field and strikes out in his only at-bat in the contest played at Alumni Field, also known as Spalding Park.
1924 The Pirates, trailing 7-2, scoring five ninth-inning runs, tie the game when left-hander Emil Yde's two-out bases-loaded double off Pete Alexander plates three runs. The Pittsburgh reliever, thrown out at home for the final out of the frame, redeems himself in the 14th inning, tripling in the winning run in the Bucs' 8-7 walk-off win over the Cubs at Forbes Field.

​

1934 New York's first baseman Lou Gehrig triples in the seventh inning to complete the first of his two career cycles, the other occurring in 1937. Rookie right-hander John Broaca, who ties a major league record when he strikes out five consecutive times, goes the distance to beat the Pale Hose at Yankee Stadium, 13-2.

​

1937 Augie Galan becomes the first National Leaguer to hit a homer from each side of the plate. The switch-hitter's pair of round-trippers, a homer from the left side off Freddie Fitzsimmons in the fourth frame and from the right side in the eighth against Ralph Birkofer, helps the Cubs beat Brooklyn at Wrigley Field, 11-2.

1937 Right fielder Ben Chapman makes a third of the putouts in the Red Sox' 4-2 victory over the Browns. In the Fenway outfield, the 28-year-old Birmingham (AL) native makes seven of the nine catches consecutively, ending the seventh handling Bill Knickerbocker's fly ball and then accounting for all of the outs defensively in the final two frames.

1943 With the first pitch thrown at 6 p.m., the Cubs right-hander Hi Bithorn shuts out the Cardinals, 6-0, in a twilight game at Wrigley Field. Under current baseball interpretations, the two-hour, 17-minute contest, played on one of the longest daylight days of the year, would be considered a night game, but no lights are needed (good thing because there aren't any).
1950 Hank Sauer enjoys a 4-for-4 day at the plate, stroking two home runs and two doubles. The 33-year-old All-Star outfielder's 12 total bases help the Cubs defeat Philadelphia at Shibe Park, 11-8.

1961 The Orioles and the Angels set a major league record using 16 pitchers, eight by each side. Ron Hansen's 14th-inning homer off Halo right-hander Ron Kline gives Baltimore the eventual 9-8 victory at L.A.'s Wrigley Field.
1968 Bobby Bonds hits a grand slam in the third at-bat of his first major league game, going deep off Dodger right-hander John Purdin in the Giants' 9-0 victory at Candlestick Park. The 22-year-old San Francisco outfielder joins Philadelphia National pitcher Bill Duggelby (1898 - first at-bat) as the only other player to hit a bases-loaded home run in his major league debut.

1971 Pirates left fielder Willie Stargell hits the longest home run in the history of Veterans Stadium in the second inning off starter Jim Bunning during a 14-4 Pirates rout of Philadelphia. The Phillies eventually commemorate the spot in Section 601 to where the ball landed black "S" inscribed within a yellow star inside a white circle, later painted black when the Hall of Famer dies in 2001.

1972 After a five-year legal battle, Bernice Gera finally becomes the first woman professional umpire when she works a minor league game in Geneva, New York. When Auburn manager Nolan Campbell vehemently argues a play where she first signals Terry Ford safe at second on a double play and then reverses her decision, the new arbitrator is brought to tears and will resign between games of the twin bill.
1976 After striking out leading off the game, his 21st consecutive hitless at-bat dating back to June 6, Mike Phillips hits for the cycle in the Mets’ 7–4 victory over the Cubs at Wrigley Field. The New York third baseman doubles in the third, triples in the fifth, homers in the seventh, completing the feat with a single in the eighth inning.
1976 Toby Harrah becomes the first shortstop in major league history to play in both ends of a twin bill without taking a single fielding chance. The Ranger infielder's inactivity at Arlington Stadium isn't due to a lack of hitting, as Texas splits the doubleheader, winning the opener 8-4 before dropping the nightcap to the White Sox, 14-9.
1984 Dodger infielder Bill Russell plays his 1,953rd game to become the team's leader in games played. The shortstop, who will extend the mark to 2181 during his 18-year tenure with the club, is hitless in three trips to the plate but will walk twice in LA's 9-4 loss to San Diego at Chavez Ravine.

1985 After a line-drive foul ball drills Yankee batboy off the bat of Bronx Bomber catcher Butch Wynegar, the team mandates batboys near the on-deck circle must wear batting helmets. All major league teams will soon adopt the new rule of having batboys wearing a protective helmet while on the field.
1988 Cal Ripken, going 2-for-4 in the Oriole 10-3 loss to Boston at Fenway Park, reaches a significant milestone, playing in his 1,000th consecutive game. In 1995, the Baltimore infielder will break Lou Gehrig's record when playing in his 2,131st straight game.

1989 The Mets, with fly ball pitcher Sid Fernandez on the mound, play a nine-inning game without recording an infield assist, beating the Phillies at Shea Stadium 5-1. The Amazins set a National League record and tie the major league mark, joining the 1945 Indians as the only teams to accomplish the unusual fielding feat.

 

1995 The Astros rout the Cubs, 19-6, to set a club record for runs in one game. After scoring a lone tally in the fourth, Houston puts up crooked numbers for the rest of the game, including a nine-run eighth inning.
1995 Andres Galarraga becomes the fourth player in big-league history to hit a home run in three consecutive innings. The Rockies' first baseman's accomplishments in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings help Colorado beat the Padres at Jack Murphy Stadium, 11-3.

1996 Mark McGwire hits his 300th career home run off Tiger hurler pitcher Omar Olivares in the A's 10-8 loss to Detroit at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. The 32-year-old first baseman will finish his 16-year career with 583 round-trippers, a total tainted by his alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs.
1998 Sammy Sosa breaks the major league record for homers in a single month when he hits his 19th dinger in June, a seventh-inning solo shot off Brian Moehler in the Cubs' 6-4 loss to Detroit at Tiger Stadium. The Chicago slugger surpasses the mark set by Rudy York, the Tigers' rookie catcher who finished with 18 after homering twice on the last day in August in 1937 at the same ballpark when it was known as Navin Field.
1999 Entering the game in the top of the eighth inning in an eventual 9-8 Oriole loss to the Yankees at Camden Yards, Jesse Orosco sets the major league record for the most relief appearances. The Baltimore reliever surpasses the mark previously set by Kent Tekulve, who had been summoned out of the bullpen 1,050 times.

1999 At Bank One Ballpark, Jose Jimenez, facing only 28 batters, outduels Randy Johnson, throws a no-hitter, blanking the Cardinals 1-0, with the contest's only run scoring on Thomas Howard's ninth-inning single plating Darren Bragg. The 25-year-old right-hander, retiring the side in order in the bottom of the frame, becomes the 20th major league and the first since 1973 rookie to throw a no-hitter.

2000 After leading off in the bottom of the first with a round-tripper, Darin Erstad ends the game in the bottom of the 11th inning with a walk-off home run, giving the Angels a 7-6 victory over Minnesota at Edison Field. 2001 In the first professional baseball game in Brooklyn after a 44-year absence, the short-season Class A minor league Cyclones win their home opener at Keyspan Park, defeating the Mahoning Valley (Ohio) Scrappers 3-2 in 10 innings. The name of the New York-Penn Mets farm team refers to the famous roller coaster located at the nearby amusement park on Coney Island.
2002 In a game broadcasted throughout Latin America, skippers Luis Pujols of the Tigers and Tony Pena of the Royals become the first major league managers born in the Dominican Republic to oppose each other in a game. Hipolito Mejia, the president of the Dominican Republic, is on hand to watch Raul Ibanez's double, triple, and homer, and four RBIs lead the hometown Royals to an 8-6 comeback victory over Detroit.

2003 Todd McFarlane, who also owns Mark McGwire's No. 70 home run ball, pays $450,000 plus fees at the Lelands.com Auction for Barry Bonds' record-breaking 73rd home run baseball. The Valley comic book icon and toymaker's bid for the historical sphere is aired live on ESPN's SportsCenter.
2004 Larry Walker's tenth-inning home run, his third of the game, proves to be the difference in the Rockies' 10-8 victory over Cleveland at Jacobs Field. The Colorado right fielder also hit homers off Jason Davis in the second and sixth frames.

2006 With his White Sox trailing 9-2, second baseman Tadahito Iguchi hits a three-run bomb in the eighth and then delivers a game-tying grand slam in the ninth during an eventual 13 inning loss to the Astros at U.S. Cellular Field. Teammates Scott Podsednik (6/23) and Joe Crede (6/24) also hit home runs with the bases full in the two previous games of the series, making it the first time the team hits a grand slam in three consecutive games.
2007 In his second Pacific Coast League start, Manny Parra of the Nashville Sounds throws the eighth perfect game in PCL history. The 24-year-old Brewers' farmhand mows down 27 consecutive Express (Astros) batters en route to a 3-0 victory at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Texas.
2007 A distraught spectator jumps onto the field and charges the mound toward Bob Howry after the Cub reliever blows an 8-3 ninth-inning lead to Colorado at Wrigley Field, making it within a few feet from his intended target before security guards tackled him. The right-hander gets the win when Alfonso Soriano hits a game-ending two-run single in the bottom of the frame to give Chicago an improbable 10-9 victory.
2010 At Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies serve as the away team when their scheduled visit to Canada to play Toronto moves Philadelphia due to security concerns raised due to the G20 Summit. The Blue Jays, batting last and employing a designated hitter in the National League ballpark, loses to Roy Halladay and 'the visitors' 9-0.
2010 Needing 149 pitches to accomplish the feat, Edwin Jackson no-hit the Rays at Tropicana Field, 1-0. The Diamondbacks' right-hander walks eight batters and hits another en route to joining Randy Johnson as the second pitcher in franchise history to throw a no-hitter.

2011 In front of a sold-out crowd of 42,130 fans at AT&T Park, the Giants beat the Indians, 1-0, with the game's lone run scoring on a bases-loaded seventh-inning balk. In an inning that features a stand-up triple by Nate Schierholtz and two errors by Tribe second baseman Cord Phelps, southpaw Tony Sipp allows the run when he flinches before delivering a pitch to Emmanuel Burriss, balking home Miguel Tejada.
2013 In a matchup of Japanese starters, Ranger All-Star Yu Darvish and Yankee right-hander Hiroki Kuroda both get a no-decision, with each hurler failing to make it into the seventh inning. New York wins the Bronx ballpark contest with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning when Japanese outfielder Ichiro Suzuki hits a walk-off home run.
2014 Tim Lincecum throws a no-hitter against the Padres for the second time in less than a year, allowing only one runner in the Giants' 4-0 victory at AT&T Park. The 30-year-old two-time Cy Young Award winner is the second hurler to have kept the same club hitless twice, joining Indians' Hall of Famer Addie Joss, who threw a pair of no-no's against the White Sox in 1908 and 1910.

2014 David Price, with his 11-strikeout performance in the Rays' 5-1 victory over the Pirates, has whiffed at least ten batters in five straight games, marking the 22nd time a pitcher has accomplished the feat in major league history. The 28-year-old southpaw joins an impressive group of hurlers that includes Pedro Martinez (6), Randy Johnson (8), Nolan Ryan (3), Curt Schilling (1), J.R. Richard (1), Dwight Gooden (1), and Johan Santana, who, in 2004, was the last to accomplished the deed.

2021 Philadelphia right-hander Aaron Nola ties Tom Seaver's record when he whiffs Michael Conforto in the bottom of the fourth for his 10th consecutive strikeout, equaling the mark set by the Hall of Famer in 1970. Mets' Pete Alonso doubles into the right-field corner to preserve the Franchise's place in the record book in the team's 2-1 walk-off victory over the Phillies at Citi Field.

• • 1899 - The St. Louis Perfectos played the New York Giants in game one of a doubleheader, then the Cleveland Spiders in game two, losing to two different teams on the same date.
  • 1903 - Boston Beaneater Wiley Piatt becomes the only 20th-century pitcher to lose two complete games in one day, falling to Pittsburgh 1-0 and 5-3.
  • 1968 - San Francisco rookie Bobby Bonds becomes the second player to debut with a grand slam as teammate Ray Sadecki blanks the Dodgers 9-0. Bonds does it on his third at-bat. The only other player to hit a grand slam in his first major-league game was William Duggelby of the Philadelphia Nationals in 1898.
  • 1976 - Ranger Toby Harrah becomes the first shortstop in major-league history to go through an entire doubleheader without a fielding chance. At the plate, Harrah makes up for the inactivity, collecting six hits, including a grand slam in the opener and another round-tripper in the nightcap. The Rangers beat the White Sox in the first game 8-4, but lose the nightcap 14-9.
  • 1986 - The Phillies give 41-year-old Steve Carlton his unconditional release and call up Bruce Ruffin to take his place in the starting rotation.
  • 1988 - Cal Ripken, Jr. plays in his 1,000th consecutive game, a 10-3 loss to Boston. Ripken's streak is the sixth-longest in major-league history.
  • 1989 - The Mets' defense does not record a single assist in a 5-1 win over Philadelphia, tying the major-league record set by the Indians in 1945. New York pitchers retire the Phillies on 13 strikeouts, 12 fly outs, and two ground balls to first base.
  • 1995 - Rockies first baseman Andres Galarraga becomes the fourth player to homer in three consecutive innings in an 11-3 win over the Padres. Galarraga, who had seven RBI in the game, went deep in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings and was on deck when the Rockies were retired in the ninth.
  • 1997 - The Brewers scarcely even sniff a hit before Jose Valentin cues Mike Mussina's first offering of the eighth inning off the end of the bat into short right field for a single in Baltimore's 9-1 win. It marks the second time in less than a month that the Orioles ace righthander flirts with a no-hitter deep into a game. Mussina retired the first 25 Cleveland hitters at Camden Yards on May 30 before Sandy Alomar's one-out single in the ninth.
