1951 Donald L. Barnes, at the request of Browns' owners William and Charles Dewitt, announces the sale of the controlling interest of the club to Bill Veeck, former owner of the Indians. The transaction arrangement ensures the new owner will keep the team in St. Louis, debunking the rumors of the franchise's shift to Milwaukee.
1952 National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues president George Trautman bans the signing of women, preventing 24-year-old softball shortstop standout Eleanor Engle from playing with the Harrisburg Senators. Commissioner Ford Frick will go one step further by formally prohibiting females from professional baseball, using the ruling to prevent teams from using women players as a publicity stunt.

1956 Orioles hurlers Connie Johnson and George Zuverink combine to one-hit the White Sox at Comiskey Park. Unfortunately, the one hit is a run-scoring double in the first frame of the team's 1-0 loss to Chicago's southpaw Jack Harshman, who also tosses a one-hitter gem in the two-hour and 12-minute contest.
1957 In his first major league start, bonus baby Von McDaniel, a recent graduate of Oklahoma's Hollis High School, two-hits the Dodgers at Busch Stadium, 2-0. The 18-year-old keeps Brooklyn hitless until Jim Gilliam's soft line drive spins out second baseman Don Blasingame's glove, and Hal Smith's failure handling sacrifice gives the visitors two tainted infield safeties in the sixth inning.

1957 Going the distance in the Senators' 6-3 victory over Cleveland, Chuck Stobbs wins his first game since throwing a shutout against Baltimore last September. The 27-year-old right-hander snaps a personal 16-game losing streak, which includes dropping his first 11 decisions this year.
1959 Stan Musial, in the Cardinals' 5-1 victory over the Bucs at Busch Stadium, collects a pair of two-baggers, the first which breaks Honus Wagner's National League record of 651 career doubles. The southpaw-swinging Stan the Man moves to third on the all-time major league list for two-base hits, trailing only American Leaguers Tris Speaker (793) and Ty Cobb (724).

1960 Richie Ashburn plays his first game in Philadelphia since being traded to the Cubs in the offseason. 'Whitey,' a fan favorite during his dozen years with the Phillies, strikes out looking to start his 1-for-6 day in an extra-inning loss at Shibe Park.

1964 Despite the four errors made by the Phillies, Rick Wise wins the first of his 188 major league victories when Philadelphia beats the Mets at Shea Stadium in the nightcap of a twin bill, 8-2. However, the 18-year-old rookie right-hander's accomplishment receives little fanfare when his effort follows Jim Bunning's perfect game in the opener.Bunning becomes the first modern pitcher to toss a no-hitter in both leagues

1967 In retaliation for Joe Foy getting struck in the helmet in the top of the frame, Red Sox starter Jim Lonborg promptly plunks opposing pitcher Thad Tillotson in the back, igniting a bench-clearing brawl in the second inning of the Yankees' 8-1 loss to Boston at the Stadium. The five-minute melee results in no ejections but doesn't quite settle the matter when Reggie Smith is brushed back in the third, and Dick Howser leaves the game in the fifth after being hit the head with a pitch.

 

1970 At Cleveland Stadium, Cesar Gutierrez goes 7-for-7, including six singles and a double, in Detroit's 9-8 victory over the Indians in 12 innings. The 27-year-old Venezuelan shortstop will finish his brief four-year major league career with a .235 lifetime batting average.
1976 Ranger right-hander Bert Blyleven one-hits the A's, giving up only a fifth-inning single to Ken McMullen in his 1-0 gem at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. The 25-year-old starter, obtained from the Twins on June 1, will toss another one-hit 1-0 victory for Texas in five days when he beats the White Sox in ten innings.

1978 On the first pitch in his first at-bat, Dave Machemer hits his only major league home run. The rookie second baseman, batting leadoff for the visiting Angels, starts the Halos' eventual 5-2 victory over Minnesota with a long fly over the left-field wall at Metropolitan Stadium.
1986 Bo Jackson, who the Royals had drafted in the fourth round, 105th overall, in the 1986 amateur draft, signs a three-year contract worth just over $1 million to play baseball with the Royals, the defending World Series champions. The Auburn Tiger running back, the recipient of the 1985 Heisman Trophy, will also play in the NFL with the LA Raiders.
1987 On Father's Day, for the second consecutive game, a bench-clearing brawl occurs between the Reds and Braves in Atlanta due to a batter hit by a pitch. Tracy Jones, struck by a ball thrown by Jim Acker, ignites the fight when he belatedly charges the toward the mound when the reliever comes within 25 feet of home plate.
1988 At Tiger Stadium, Detroit scores six times in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat a stunned Yankees team, 7-6. Allen Trammell ends the game dramatically, hitting a two-out walk-off grand slam off Cecilio Guante.
1989 Carlton Fisk surpasses Yogi Berra as the American League leader for career home runs by a catcher. The White Sox backstop's 307th home run helps to beat the Yankees, 7-3.

1998 On Father's Day, the New York Times publishes Michael Bouton's open letter to the Yankees, asking the franchise to reconsider its long-time snub of his dad, Jim, the team's former 21-game winner and controversial author of Ball Four. Thanks to his son's efforts, Jim Bouton's banishment from Yankee Stadium will end next month when the right-hander receives an invitation to return to the Bronx ballpark for the first time in nearly thirty years to participate in the team's Old-Timers' Day.

1998 The Dodgers, 12.5 games behind the division-leading Padres, release Bill Russell, replacing the 36-38 skipper with Glenn Hoffmann, manager of the organization's Triple-A Albuquerque Dukes. In the front office, Tommy Lasorda assumes the general manager duties of the third-place club from Fred Claire.
1999 Blue Jay Tony Fernandez becomes the Dominican-born career hits leader with his 2,178th hit to move ahead of Julio Franco. The shortstop's hit plated the winning run with two outs in the ninth in Toronto's 2-1 victory over Kansas City.
2000 Eric Chavez becomes the 13th A's player in the 100-year history of the franchise to hit for the cycle when he doubles (2nd), singles (4th), and triples (5th) off Mike Mussina, and completes the rare event with a home run (7th) off Jose Mercedes in the team's 10-3 win over Baltimore. Oakland's 22-year-old third baseman is the seventh-youngest major leaguer to accomplish the feat.

2001 Returning to the major leagues after a stint with the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League, Jose Canseco starts as the designated hitter for the White Sox. The former All-Star, who has 446 career home runs (23rd all-time), didn't get any offers after being released by the Angels in the spring.
2002 During the New York-Penn League game between the New Jersey Cardinals and the Staten Island Yankees, a fan hops a fence and goes onto the field to argue an umpire's call at first base. The 38-year-old woman, who will face disorderly person charges, is at the game with her eight-year-old daughter's Brownie troop.
2002 Luis Castillo hits safely in his 35th consecutive game, tying Fred Clarke (1895), Ty Cobb (1917), and George Sisler (1924-25) for the tenth longest streak in major league history. The Marlins' infielder's third-inning infield hit off knuckleballer Steve Sparks' glove also surpasses Benito Santiago's 1987 streak, the longest established by a Latin player.

2003 Tied 2-2 after nine innings at Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium, the Red Sox and Phillies exchange runs in the twelfth, and then when Boston tallies twice in the thirteenth, the hometown team scores three times in the bottom of the frame to win the interleague contest, 6-5. Boston shortstop Nomar Garciaparra goes 6-for-6 for the day, all singles.

2005 General manager Dan O'Brien meets face to face with Reds skipper Dave Miley (125-164) to inform the third-year manager of his decision to fire him. As a result, former Ranger manager Jerry Narron becomes the 58th manager in Reds' history.
2005 After building a 10-2 lead at Yankee Stadium, the Devil Rays lose to the Bronx Bombers 20-11, making it the second time in franchise history the team is ahead by eight or more runs and loses by nine or more tallies. With no other club in baseball history achieving this dubious distinction, the D-Rays now have accomplished the feat twice with their 1999 defeat to the Indians. Giving up 13 runs in the bottom of the second inning, the Devil Rays become the first team in history to yield that many tallies in one inning twice during the same season. New York was the benefactor each time, as the visiting Tampa Bay hurlers also had a 13-run meltdown in April at Yankee Stadium.

 

2006 Jose Reyes becomes the ninth player in Mets history to hit for the cycle. The 23-year-old shortstop hits a leadoff homer in the first, followed by a double in the third, then a triple in the fifth, and completes the feat with an eighth-inning single in the team's 5-4 loss to the Reds at Shea Stadium.

2009 Tony La Russa gets his 2,500th victory as a manager when the Cardinals defeat Kansas City at Kauffman Stadium, 12-5. Joining Connie Mack and John McGraw, the Redbird skipper, who also piloted the White Sox and A's, becomes only the third major league manager to reach the milestone.

​

2011 At the Ballpark in Arlington, many of the 33,533 fans in attendance at the Rangers' game against the Astros, including former President George W. Bush, wear red or blue sunglasses provided by Reliant Energy, easily shattering the previous Guinness World Record of 424 patrons wearing shades after dark. Mitch Moreland helps Texas see the light when he goes deep leading off the 11th inning to give the team a 5-4 walk-off victory.
2015 Melissa Mayeux becomes the first female to be placed on the Major League Baseball's international registration list, making her eligible to be signed by pro teams on July 2. The 16 year-old shortstop of the French U-18 junior national team campaigned successfully to abolish the country's "no-girls-allowed" rule, so she could keep competing with the boys.
2016 Dean Kremer becomes the first-ever Israeli to sign a contract with a Major League baseball team when he comes to terms with the Dodgers after being selected in the annual amateur draft earlier this month. The 20-year-old right-hander, who won Europe's Most Valuable Pitcher award in 2014 and 2015, has hurled for Israel's national baseball team for the past three seasons.
2016 Astro backstop Erik Kratz, who tossed an ineffective inning in an 11-1 rout by the Angels in April, becomes the first modern player to catch and pitch for two teams in the same season, throwing a scoreless ninth inning in relief in the Pirates' 15-4 loss to the Giants at PNC Park. The 36 year-old journeyman backstop, obtained earlier in the month from the Halos, allows two hits, striking out Brandon Belt for the first out of the frame.
2019 On his first trip to Busch Stadium, Albert Pujols receives a warm welcome from the Cardinals fans, receiving standing ovations during warm-ups, a scoreboard tribute, and his first three at-bats before a getting curtain call upon leaving the game. During his 11-year tenure with the Redbirds before becoming a free agent seven seasons ago, the Angels' first baseman won three MVPs, a Rookie of the Year award, six Silver Sluggers, two Gold Gloves, two World Series rings, and the 2004 NLCS MVP.

• • 1939 - The New York Yankees announce Lou Gehrig's retirement, based on the report that he has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The 36-year-old star will remain with the team as captain.
  • 1950 - Joe DiMaggio gets his 2,000th hit, a seventh-inning single off the Indians Chick Pieretti, as the Yanks win 8-2. DiMaggio joins Luke Appling and Wally Moses as the only active players with 2,000 or more hits.
  • 1964 - On Father's Day at Shea Stadium, Jim Bunning pitches the first perfect game (excluding Don Larsen's 1956 World Series effort and Harvey Haddix's 1959 extra-inning loss) since Charlie Robertson's on April 30, 1922. He also becomes the first pitcher to win no-hitters in both leagues and drives in 2 runs as Philadelphia beats the Mets 6-0. Gus Triandos becomes the first catcher to catch a no-hitter in each league. The Mets don't fare much better in the nightcap as rookie Rick Wise wins his first game and gives up just 3 hits for an 8-2 win.
  • 1970 - Detroit's Cesar Gutierrez goes seven-for-seven to tie a record set in 1892 in a 12-inning, 9-8 win over Cleveland. Mickey Stanley's home run wins it for the Tigers. Gutierrez will collect just seven hits in all of 1971, and 128 hits for his career.
  • 1971 - Indians slugger Ken Harrelson announces his retirement from baseball to join the pro golf tour.
  • 1986 - Bo Jackson, college football's Heisman Trophy winner in 1985 and the first pick (by Tampa Bay) in the NFL draft, stuns observers nationwide by signing with the Kansas City Royals instead.
  • 1989 - The Yankees trade outfielder Rickey Henderson back to the A's for journeymen pitchers Eric Plunk and Greg Cadaret and outfielder Luis Polonia

1900 Umpire Hank O’Day forfeits the game to the Superbas when the Phillies stall the action in the bottom of the 11th inning, hoping the delay postpones the Baker Bowl contest due to darkness. Brooklyn had scored seven runs in the top of the frame to pull ahead in the slugfest, 20-13.
1913 The White Sox post their 1,000th victory in the 13-year history of the franchise when the team beats the Browns, 2-0. Big Ed Walsh tosses a complete-game shutout with Shano Collins driving in both runs in the Comiskey Park contest in the nightcap of a doubleheader sweep.

​

1925 Max Carey gets two hits in both the first and eighth innings when the Pirates beat the Cardinals at Sportsman's Park, 24-6. The feat will not be accomplished again until Rennie Stennett, also with Pittsburgh, collects two hits in one inning twice, the first and the fifth frames, in 1975.

​

1926 The Cardinals pick up future Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander, placed on waivers by the Cubs. The acquisition of 'Old Pete' will prove pivotal to the Redbirds' World Series triumph over the Yankees when the 39-year-old right-hander wins Games 2 and 6 and saves Game 7 of the Fall Classic.

1932 After refusing to follow suit, probably due to opposing players and fans harassing the Cardinals when they wore numerals on their sleeves in 1923, the National League finally approves the use of uniform numbers to identify players. Some American League teams regularly implemented digits on their jerseys a few seasons ago.
1936 At Brooklyn's Ebbets Field, Ival Goodman hits an unusual home run when his fifth-inning fly ball lands and stays on top of the scoreboard in right field. Then, with the perched ball considered in play, the three Dodger outfielders watch the Reds' right fielder round the bases for an easy inside-the-park round-tripper in their 7-2 loss to Cincinnati.

 

1941 In their 5-4 victory over Detroit, the Yankees establish a new record by hitting at least one home run in 18 straight contests. Joe DiMaggio's sixth-inning blast breaks the major league mark previously held by the Tigers and continues his own consecutive game, hitting streak to 35 games.

1944 Boston right-hander Jim Tobin holds the Phillies hitless in the shortened five-inning nightcap, blanking Philadelphia at Braves Field, 7-0. In April, 'Abba Dabba' threw a full-game no-hitter against Brooklyn.
1944 Charley Schantz wins when the Phillies blank Boston for 15 innings in the first game of a twin bill, matching the longest shutout in franchise history. Philadelphia right-fielder Ron Northey's homer in the top of the frame scores the game's only run in the 1-0 victory at Braves Field.

1947 After pitching a no-hitter four days ago against the Braves, Reds hurler Ewell Blackwell loses his chance for a second consecutive no-hitter when Dodgers' second baseman Eddie Stanky singles with one out the ninth inning at Crosley Field.

​

1959 At LA's Memorial Coliseum, Sandy Koufax, facing 39 batters, goes the distance to beat the Phillies, 6-2. The Dodger southpaw fans 16 Philadelphia batters to set a new record for strikeouts in a night game.

​

1962 Stan Musial surpasses Ty Cobb as MLB's all-time total base leader, collecting seven more with four hits in a doubleheader split against the Phillies. Stan the Man ties the Georgia Peach's mark of 5,863 with a home run in the opener, and he then breaks the record in the same frame with a single when the Cardinals send 11 batters to the plate, en route to scoring six runs in their 7-3 victory at Connie Mack Stadium.

1962 Al Jackson throws the first one-hitter in franchise history when the Mets beat the Colt .45's, the National League's other expansion team, at the Polo Grounds, 2-0. Joey Amalfitano's line-drive single to left field in the first inning is the lone hit given up by the southpaw.

​

 

1966 At the Astrodome, Houston sets a home attendance mark, which will last for 22 years. Dodger southpaw Sandy Koufax, who tosses a complete game to improve his record to 13-2, beats the hometown team, 5-2, in front of the 50,908 fans attending the Wednesday contest.
1976 In the seventh inning of a 4-2 Padres win over hometown San Francisco, Randy Jones ties Christy Mathewson's NL mark by going 68 innings without issuing a base on balls. However, the southpaw's streak will end when he walks Marc Hill leading off the next frame, keeping the 63-year-old record intact.

1977 In a 7-4 victory over the Orioles at Memorial Stadium, the Red Sox collect their 100th round-tripper of the season, the earliest the club has ever reached the milestone. Today's homers, hit by George Scott, Jim Rice, Carlton Fisk (2), and Butch Hobson, all off Jim Palmer, contribute to a major league record of 29 home runs launched by one club in a span of eight consecutive games.

1979 With the Orioles trailing 5-3, going into the bottom of the ninth inning, Doug DeCinces hits a two-out walk-off home run off reliever Dave Tobik to give the team a 6-5 win over the Tigers at Memorial Stadium. Some believe the victory triggered the start of "Oriole Magic," igniting an atmosphere of unbridled enthusiasm in the Charm City for the franchise.
1982 The Phillies' Pete Rose moves past Hank Aaron into second place for career hits when he doubles off Redbird right-hander John Stuper for his 3,772nd hit. 'Charlie Hustle,' 419 hits shy of Ty Cobb's record, will surpass the Georgia Peach's total in 1985 with his 4,192nd hit, a single to left-center field at Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium off San Diego's Eric Show.

1984 In an emotional home plate ceremony before the Twins contest at the Metrodome, Calvin Griffith and his sister Thelma Hayes signed a letter of intent, ending the most extended family ownership of a team in baseball history. The franchise, initially based in Washington, D.C. and owned by the Griffiths since 1920, is sold to Carl Pohlad, a Minnesota banker.
1987 "If I can't pitch well, I'm not going to hurt myself and the Mets. Why would I do that? I've had doubts from the start that it could be done right. The doubts are still very evident. I'm too proud to do this badly." - TOM SEAVER, commenting privately about his attempted comeback. After spending over two weeks of training trying to make a comeback to help the Mets' starting rotation, sidelined by injuries to four pitchers, Tom Seaver announces his retirement after being enticed by GM Frank Cashen to join the club for the rest of the season for $500,000. The future Hall of Famer ends his career with 311 victories, of which 198 came wearing a Met uniform.

1990 During the Double-A Eastern League contest between the Harrisburg Senators and Hagerstown Suns at Maryland's Municipal Stadium, the home of the Orioles affiliate, George H.W. Bush's motorcade enters the ballpark, marking the first time a US president has attended a minor league game. The 41st Commander-in-Chief and his guests, including NFL legend Walter Payton, initially planned to watch the Carolina League Single-A Keys play until a sudden storm washed out the nearby Frederick contest, making the alternative site for the previously unannounced visitor.
1993 On his final day as a professional baseball player, 45 year-old White Sox backstop Carlton Fisk catches his 2,226th game to surpass Bob Boone as the all-time leader. 'Pudge' played the first 11 seasons in his 24-year major league career with the Red Sox.

1994 In the Mets' 5-2 victory at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, southpaw closer John Franco picks up his 253rd save, the most by a left-hander. The first two Braves batters in the lineup, Roberto Kelly and Jeff Blauser, both hit home runs off New York starter Pete Smith, but the back-to-back first inning round-trippers will prove to be the only scoring done by the team for the rest of the game.

1994 Hitting his 31st home run of the season, Ken Griffey Jr. breaks Babe Ruth's record for most homers before July 1. Although the Yankee slugger needed only 63 games to reach 30 homers in 1928 and 68 games in 1930, Junior accomplishes the feat in the Mariners' 70th game of the season.

​

1997 Four Braves players homer in the third inning of the team's 12-5 rout of Philadelphia at Veterans Stadium. The round-trippers by Chipper Jones, Fred McGriff, Michael Tucker, and Jeff Blauser account for six of the nine runs scored in the frame.

​

1998 At Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, the Marlins defeat the Devil Rays in an interleague contest, 3-2. The Citrus Series contest marks the first time the two major league teams from Florida have faced one another in the regular season.
1999 Although he has been dead for fifty-one years, Hack Wilson is awarded another RBI, increasing his major league RBI record to 191. The commissioner's office revises the total after baseball's historian Jerome Holtzman discovered the Cubs outfielder did not get credit for driving in Kiki Cuyler with a third-inning single in a game played in July of 1930.

 

2001 The Braves trade John Rocker and minor league third baseman Troy Cameron to the Indians in a four-player deal in return for Steve Karsay, Steve Reed, and cash. The Atlanta fireballer became a national figure after his negative comments about New Yorkers, gays, unwed moms, and immigrants in Sports Illustrated.
2002 Luis Castillo, going 0-for-4, sees his 35-game hitting streak comes to an end when he is left on deck as the Marlins cap off a four-run, ninth-inning rally to beat Detroit 5-4. The feat is the longest ever accomplished by a second baseman, a mark that Phillies' second-sacker Chase Utley will equal in 2006.
2002 Joe Girardi, the Cubs' player rep, informs the Wrigley Field crowd of the postponement of the game with St. Louis due to the death of Cardinal right-hander Darryl Kile. The 33-year-old starter, a victim of coronary disease found in his hotel room, becomes the first active major league player to pass away during the regular season since 1979 when Yankee captain Thurman Munson died practicing landing his plane.
2006 While being intentionally walked, Miguel Cabrera, noticing Baltimore's catcher Ramon Hernandez's proximity to the plate, pokes Todd Williams' soft toss into center field for an RBI single, scoring Hanley Ramirez from second base. The tenth-inning tally proves to be the go-ahead run in the Marlins' eventual 8-5 overtime victory over the Orioles at Camden Yards.
2006 In just his fourth major league start, Cardinals starter Anthony Reyes throws a one-hitter but is beaten by the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field, 1-0. The only hit the Redbird rookie right-hander gives up is Jim Thome's seventh-inning solo home run.
2006 Roger Clemens, opposing a pitcher born the year before he began his major league career, makes his much-hyped season debut against the Twins. The 'Rocket,' starting his 23rd major league season, is bested by Francisco Liriano, a 22-year-old pitching sensation from the Dominican Republic, when Minnesota beats the Astros, 4-2.

 

2007 Australian-born Ryan Rowland-Smith becomes the first player to wear a hyphenated last name on a major-league uniform. The 24-year-old Mariner reliever pitches 1.1 scoreless innings when the Reds rout the team at Safeco Field, 16-1.
